Dinoflagellate-cyst based biostratigraphy is an important tool in the stratigraphical subdivision and correlation of the Neogene Lake Pannon deposits. A total of 66 palynological samples were investigated from the Pannonian (upper Miocene) marl succession exposed in the Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit in order to evaluate the biostratigraphical assignment and constrain the age of the strata. Earlier attempts to recover dinoflagellate cysts from this important reference section had failed. In our material, six samples contained well-preserved palynomorphs. One sample from the lower part of the succession (D25) contained a probably reworked middle Miocene assemblage. Samples from the middle segment of the succession (D3, D2, D1) indicate the Pontiadinium pecsvaradensis Zone (ca. 10.8 to 10.6 Ma). Samples from the top of the marl (D219, D221) did not give additional stratigraphic information (P. pecsvaradensis Zone or younger). The palynofacies of samples D3 to D221 indicates a relatively distal, calm, occasionally oxygen-deficient, probably deep depositional environment.

Upper Miocene Pannonian sediments from Belgrade (Serbia): new evidence and paleoenvironmental considerationsThe Late Miocene sublittoral marls of the Pannonian Stage (the long-lived Lake Pannon) were studied. From neotectonic point of view, the investigated area represents a natural border between two different morphostructural domains: the Pannonian Basin to the north and the Peri-Pannonian Realm to the south. More than 20 mollusc and 34 ostracod species were identified which indicate the upper part of the Lower Pannonian and the lower part of the Middle Pannonian ("Serbian") predominantly. The identified dinoflagellate cyst assemblage (21 taxa) hinders assignment of the studied samples to a Pannonian substage but supports the high endemism of the Pannonian flora. The lithostratigraphical, paleontological, and paleoecological analyses indicate a mesohaline (8-16 ‰), sublittoral (<90 m deep) environment of the early Lake Pannon. The estimated stratigraphic range for the investigated deposits is 9.8-11.4 Ma.

For the first time some outcrops of the Upper Miocene Ishim Formation on the south of Tyumen Area near Pyatkovo, Masali and Bigila villages are studied by palynological method in detail. A series of mineralogical analyzes of these sediments and radiocarbon analysis of the Quaternary sediments overlying the Ishim Formation are done. Four palynocomplexes (PC) are established in the Ishim Formation: PC1 with Botryococcus; PC2 with Botryococcus, Sigmopollis; PC3 with Alnus, Polypodiaceae, Botryococcus, Sigmopollis; PC4 with Betula, Alnus, Corylus. The layers with PC1, PC2 и PC3 are traced in two outcrops near Masali and Bigila Villages. PC4 is revealed from the sands and aleuropelits of the outcrop near Pyatkovo Village, it is characterized by a significant content of diverse pollen of temperate termophylic broad-leafed taxa and by the presence of rare typical Miocene elements (Таxodiaceae, Nyssa, Tsuga). The PC3 and PC4 are compared with the complexes well known from the Neogene sediments of Western Siberia. PC5 with Betula, Herbae, Fungi is revealed from the bedded silts overlying the Ishim Formation in Masali outcrop. Previously, these sediments were attributed to the Late Miocene Pavlodar Formation. The composition and the structure of PC5 allowed making an assumption about Quaternary age of the enclosing sediments. Radiocarbon analysis of the organic substance from the silts showed, that these sediments were accumulated in the Late Pleistocene (Sartan Ice Age). For the first time the information about microphytoplankton (Botryococcus, Pediastrum, Zygnemataceae, Sigmopollis) and other nonpollen palynomorphs, contained in Ishim Formation (Upper Miocene) and in Pleistocene sediments, is given. On palynological data, some stages of development of the Late Miocene Ishim Basin and the type of vegetation surrounding this basin are considered. The depositional environment of Pleistocene sediments (Masali outcrop) is reconstructed.

Abstract. The type material of six dinoflagellate cyst species from the Late Oligocene to Middle Miocene of northwest Germany, described originally by Gerlach (1961), is reillustrated and redescribed. It is shown to include representatives of nine species. Areosphaeridium (ex: Baltisphaeridium) pectiniforme is found to be a senior synonym of Areosphaeridium multicornutum Eaton. Systematophora placacantha is considered to be a senior synonym of Cleistosphaeridium (ex: Baltisphaeridium) panniforme (Gerlach). The new combination Rhynchodiniopsis tenuitabulata (Gerlarch) is proposed. Revised diagnoses for these three species and for Leptodinium membranigerum (Gerlach), Achomosphaera triangulata (Gerlach) and Lejeunecysta hyalina (Gerlach) are proposed. The morphology of a form described here for the first time, and tentatively attributed to Phthanoperidinium, is considered perhaps to imply a separate origin for the Phthanoperidiniaceae: for that reason familial, rather than tribal, rank is preferred for that group. The stratigraphical ranges of the nine species here recognised and of two others of Gerlach’s species redescribed in earlier papers are detailed; elimination of misattributed forms means that these ranges are shorter than the published literature suggests.

Detailed dinoflagellate cyst analysis of the Lower–Middle Miocene Berchem Formation at the southernmost margin of the North Sea Basin (northern Belgium) allowed a precise biostratigraphical positioning and a reconstruction of the depositional history. The two lower members of the formation (Edegem Sands and decalcified Kiel Sands) are biostratigraphically regarded as one unit since no significant break within the dinocyst assemblages is observed. The base of this late (or latest) Aquitanian–Burdigalian unit coincides with sequence boundary Aq3/Bur1 as defined by Hardenbol and others, in work published in 1998. A hiatus at the Lower–Middle Miocene transition separates the upper member (the Antwerpen Sands) from the underlying member. The greater part of the Antwerpen Sands were deposited in a Langhian (latest Burdigalian?)–middle Serravallian interval. The base of this unit coincides with sequence boundary Bur5/Lan1. Biostratigraphical correlation points to a diachronous post-depositional decalcification within the formation since parts of the decalcified Kiel Sands can be correlated with parts of the calcareous fossil-bearing section, up to now interpreted as Antwerpen Sands. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages are dominated by species with a inner neritic preference, although higher numbers of oceanic taxa in the upper part of the formation indicate incursions of oceanic watermasses into the confined depositional environment of the southern North Sea Basin.

This paper examines Badenian (middle Miocene) macroinvertebrates – corals and molluscs – from the Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit (Mecsek Mts, SW Hungary) in order to extend our knowledge on Miocene normal marine deposits of the Mecsek region. Corals occur reworked in the upper Miocene sand that was deposited in the brackish Lake Pannon, and presumably originate either from the middle Badenian Pécsszabolcs or the upper Badenian Rákos Member of the Lajta Formation. A total of seven taxa were identified. These taxa suggest subtropical conditions and a lack of coral reefs in the Badenian. Molluscs were found in situ in the upper Badenian Szilágy Clay Marl Member of the Baden Formation and the Rákos Member of the Lajta Formation. They dominantly consist of bivalves and represent benthic assemblages typical of the middle Miocene Central Paratethys.

The Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit in southern Hungary exposes middle and upper Miocene (Badenian to Pannonian/Langhian to Tortonian) sediments along the mountain front fault zone of the Mecsek Mts and preserves an essential record of tectonic events during and after the early late Miocene, which are not exposed elsewhere in the region. In this paper we present structural observations recorded over 20 years of work, date the deformation events with mollusk biostratigraphy and make inferences on the structural evolution of the area. At the beginning of the time interval between 10.2–10.0 Ma, NNW–SSE (to NW–SE) extension created normal faults and negative flower structures. These show that extension-related fault activity lasted here up to the late Miocene. Shortly thereafter, still in the early part of the time interval between 10.2–10.0 Ma, N–S to NNW–SSE compression ensued and dominated the area ever since. Deformations under this stress field included reverse faulting in the Pannonian marls and sands, folding of the whole succession, with bedding-plane slip and shearingelated block rotation in the already deposited middle and upper Miocene marl layers and continuously changing bedding dips and southward thickening layers in the Pannonian sands. Lake level changes of Lake Pannon must have played a role in the formation of an angular unconformity within the sands besides compression. The compressional event can be explained by the Africa (Adria) – Europe convergence, but cannot be correlated regionally; it pre-dates basin inversion-related events reported from the region so far.

This paper presents the integration of micropaleontological (palynology and foraminifera) and isotopic (87Sr/86Sr) analysis of a selected interval from the well 2-TG-96-RS, drilled on the onshore portion of the Pelotas Basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. A total of eight samples of the section between 140.20 and 73.50 m in depth was selected for palynological analysis, revealing diversified and abundant palynomorph associations. Species of spores, pollen grains and dinoflagellate cysts are the most common palynomorphs found. Planktic and benthic calcareous foraminifera were recovered from the lowest two levels of the section (140.20 and 134.30 m). Based on the stratigraphic range of the species of dinoflagellate cysts and sporomorphs, a span age from Late Miocene to Early Pliocene is assigned. The relative age obtained from the 87Sr/86Sr ratio in shells of calcareous foraminifers indicates a Late Miocene (Messinian) correspondence, corroborating the biostratigraphic positioning performed with palynomorphs. Paleoenvironmental interpretations based on the quantitative distribution of organic components (palynomorphs, phytoclasts and amorphous organic matter) throughout the section and on foraminiferal associations indicate a shallow marine depositional environment for the section. Two palynologicals intervals were recognized based on palynofacies analysis, related to middle to outer shelf (140.20 to 128.90 m) and inner shelf (115.75 to 73.50 m) conditions.

Detailed lithostratigraphic study of the postalpine deposits that build Pramoritsa river banks - tributary of Aliakmonas river- north of Grevena (Greece), showed that the marine molassic deposition did not cease in the Upper Miocene but continued in the Lower Pliocene, too. Systematic sampling revealed abundant pelagic and benthic fossils, the presence of which {Bulimina exilis, Bulimina costata, Neogloboquadrina acostaensis, Globigerinella pseudobesa, Globoquadrina venezuelana, Neoeponides schreibersii, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Dorothia gibbosa) proves that marine facies went on, at least, until the Lower Pliocene and that the depositional environment was characterized as coastal with warm waters. According to the Nannoplankton flora correlated with standard nannoplankton -zones-subzones NNllb Amaurolithus delicatus, Discoaster quinqueramus) and NN13 (Ceratolithus rugosus) of MARTINI, 1971 and OKADA & BUKRY, 1980 during the Late Miocene -Early Pliocene. Besides, some characteristics of the Pliocene sediments are described, based on macro- and microscopic observations.
