This paper examines Badenian (middle Miocene) macroinvertebrates – corals and molluscs – from the Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit (Mecsek Mts, SW Hungary) in order to extend our knowledge on Miocene normal marine deposits of the Mecsek region. Corals occur reworked in the upper Miocene sand that was deposited in the brackish Lake Pannon, and presumably originate either from the middle Badenian Pécsszabolcs or the upper Badenian Rákos Member of the Lajta Formation. A total of seven taxa were identified. These taxa suggest subtropical conditions and a lack of coral reefs in the Badenian. Molluscs were found in situ in the upper Badenian Szilágy Clay Marl Member of the Baden Formation and the Rákos Member of the Lajta Formation. They dominantly consist of bivalves and represent benthic assemblages typical of the middle Miocene Central Paratethys.

The middle Miocene foraminifera and ostracod record of the Central Paratethys usually reflects stable normal marine epositional environments for the Badenian and more patchy, less stable restricted marine environments for the Sarmatian. A 17 m thick outcrop at Pécs-Danitzpuszta, Mecsek Mts, SW Hungary exposed an upper Badenian to Pannonian succession where foraminifers and ostracods document significant environmental changes. The basal layers of the section contain micro- and macrofossils indicating normal marine, shallow, warm, well-oxygenated habitat with relatively high-energy conditions and algal vegetation on the bottom, and represent the upper Badenian (13.82 to 12.65 Ma). The marine deposits are followed by coarse sandstone, breccia and siltstone layers barren of microfossils but containing rhizoliths. The sediments were probably subaerially exposed for some time. The following marine inundation, marked by the appearance of clays and limestones as well as fossils, was dated to the late Sarmatian (ca. 12 to 11.6 Ma) on the basis of the restricted marine microfossil assemblages from the upper part of the succession (Porosononion granosum Zone, Aurila notata Zone). This community is characterized by exclusively eurytopic forms indicating an unstable and vegetated marginal marine environment with fluctuations in salinity, as well as oxygen and food availability. Within the 5 m thick upper Sarmatian marine interval, a unique fresh- to oligohaline fauna characterizes a few layers in less than 1 m thickness. This fauna consists of highly euryhaline foraminifera and freshwater to oligohaline ostracod assemblages, indicating a temporary salinity reduction to 5–10 ‰. No similar freshwater fauna has been reported from the Sarmatian of the Central Partethys so far. The eventual disappearance of the foraminifera from the paleontological record coupled with a complete turnover in the ostracod fauna indicates the transition from the marginal marine Sarmatian Sea to the brackish Lake Pannon, marking the Sarmatian/Pannonian boundary (11.6 Ma).

A redescription of two Middle Miocene burrowing ghost shrimps of the Central Paratethys, Callianassa brocchiiLőrenthey, 1897 and Callianassa pseudorakosensis Lőrenthey in Lőrenthey & Beurlen, 1929, is provided. Material form-ing the basis of this study comes from the Studienka Formation (lower 'Sarmatian', Serravallian) of the Slovak part of theVienna Basin and exhibits preservation allowing reassignment of the studied taxa to the genera Neocallichirus Sakai, 1988and Eucalliax Manning & Felder, 1991 respectively. The major cheliped of both species exhibits two distinct morphotypesinterpreted herein as possible sexual dimorpism. Several specimens of both taxa are preserved within the tube structuresand are interpreted as in situ preservation within the burrows. Type material of both studied taxa and additional collections from the roughly coeval strata of Hungary and Austria were also studied.

Geology of the Čoka structure in northern Banat (Central Paratethys, Serbia)The Čoka structure is a fault-bounded anticline in northern Banat, in the southern part of the Neogene Pannonian Basin. The structure and its vicinity were explored by 24 wells. In addition to well logs, paleontological, sedimentological and petrological analyses of cores and 27 seismic sections with different parameters of acquisition and processing were used for geological investigation of the area. The E-SE dipping pre-Neogene basement consists of Lower Triassic clastics and, in the NW part of the study area, Paleozoic greenschists. Thin Middle Miocene (Badenian) sediments unconformably overlie the basement and pinch out towards the elevated NW part of the study area. They are also missing in some wells on the apex of the Čoka structure, probably due to erosion. Badenian sediments were deposited in a shallow marine environment. The late Middle Miocene (Sarmatian) strata are missing and the Badenian is directly overlain by Upper Miocene (Pannonian) sediments. The latter also pinch out towards the NW but in contrast to Badenian sediments, they are present in all boreholes on the Čoka structure. Pannonian deposition took place in a caspibrackish environment of Lake Pannon, with predominance of marls and fine-grained clastics. Pannonian sediments are conformably overlain by latest Miocene (Pontian) and Pleistocene lacustrine, alluvial and terrestrial sediments.

Dinoflagellate-cyst based biostratigraphy is an important tool in the stratigraphical subdivision and correlation of the Neogene Lake Pannon deposits. A total of 66 palynological samples were investigated from the Pannonian (upper Miocene) marl succession exposed in the Pécs-Danitzpuszta sand pit in order to evaluate the biostratigraphical assignment and constrain the age of the strata. Earlier attempts to recover dinoflagellate cysts from this important reference section had failed. In our material, six samples contained well-preserved palynomorphs. One sample from the lower part of the succession (D25) contained a probably reworked middle Miocene assemblage. Samples from the middle segment of the succession (D3, D2, D1) indicate the Pontiadinium pecsvaradensis Zone (ca. 10.8 to 10.6 Ma). Samples from the top of the marl (D219, D221) did not give additional stratigraphic information (P. pecsvaradensis Zone or younger). The palynofacies of samples D3 to D221 indicates a relatively distal, calm, occasionally oxygen-deficient, probably deep depositional environment.

Abstract During the Middle Miocene, the northern Croatian Medvednica Mt. was an island within the Pannonian Basin System, situated on the SW margin of the Central Paratethys Sea. Miocene sedimentary rocks (the Late Badenian Bulimina–Bolivina Zone and Ammonia beccarii ecozone), from the SW slopes of Medvednica Mt. clearly reflect a transgressive-regressive cycle with emersion during the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary. After the initial phase of transgression, the pioneer Elphidium–Asterigerinata–Ammonia benthic foraminiferal assemblage is present in bioclastic limestones, such as those at the Borovnjak locality. This marginal marine assemblage from a highly energetic, normally saline environment is characterized by poor preservation of foraminiferal tests, low diversity and strong domination. Advanced transgression is followed by establishment of the Elphidium–Asterigerinata assemblage, which is found in biocalcsiltites from the laterally deeper and more sheltered environment at Gornje Vrapče. This diverse assemblage is typical for inner/middle shelf environment with sufficient oxygen content. A general shallowing upward trend can be recognized at both localities, followed by visible interchange of different sedimentological and biotic features. Successive and oscillatory regression in the marginal marine environment was followed by salinity fluctuations and final brackish conditions with Ammonia–Elphidium assemblage. The laterally deeper environment reacted to regressive trends on finer scale with almost regular changes of benthic foraminiferal assemblages in the laminae (Heterolepa–Bolivina assemblage/Bolivina–Cassidulina assemblage/Elphidium–Asterigerinata assemblage). It might reflect sea-level oscillations with periodically increased siliciclastic and nutrient input from land or influence of seasonality on benthic assemblages, which occurred in the advanced phase of the regression near the Badenian/Sarmatian boundary.

Coral reefs are very important and highly biodiverse ecosystems that are exposed to various stressors, including biological ones, such as parasitism and corallivory – the direct consumption of coral tissue by a predator. Knowledge on the effects of corallivory on the coral reefs in the Colombian Pacific is poor. Therefore a study was set up to quantify the abundance of and the corallivory rate by the snail Jenneria pustulata in La Azufrada and Playa Blanca coral reefs (Gorgona Island, Colombia). Snails were manually sampled from the underside of Pocillopora sp. colonies and measured in situ to determine their size structure for each reef. To measure possible damage caused by corallivory, several snails were kept under controlled laboratory conditions for 24 h. Snail sizes and corallivory varied significantly between reefs (P=0.0001; P«0.001). Snails from Playa Blanca were larger than snails from La Azufrada, while corallivory was higher in La Azufrada than in Playa Blanca. Although corallivory rates by J. pustulata are smaller than rates reported for other predators in different coral species, it is recommended to continue this kind of investigations in order to increase the knowledge on biological dynamics of this species and to understand how they affect the reefs at Gorgona Island.

A considerable amount of coal deposits occur within the Mesohellenic Trough in Greece. It is considered as the largest and most important basin of the last orogenic stage of the Hellenides, which is interpreted as a back-arc basin that evolved during the period of Late Oligocene to Miocene. In this study, a simplified geological map has been constructed emphasizing on the coal formation occurrences of the Mesohellenic Trough. This work has been accomplished, through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and has been organized via geodatabase as GIS data files (feature classes). For the creation of the geological map suitable homogenization and discrete representation has been implemented different geological sheets, original source and traditional maps. Next step was the geostatistical analysis using polygonal methods linked to the corresponding tabular information. Regarding the stratigraphical age, and petrographic data related to geographic distribution of the coal occurrences, these are divided into three categories: Oligocene, Middle Miocene and Upper Miocene coals, exhibiting various physicochemical and topological properties. Upper Miocene coal exhibits the greatest area and perimeter values, while the lowest values correspond to those of the Middle Miocene. Terrain models such as aspect (angle-direction) and hillshade (shaded relief) showed the spatial relation between coal occurrences and morphotectonic as long as geometrical characteristics of the study area. Coals are mainly classified as huminites including mainly huminite group minerals (90%). Their S contents can probably derive from parent plant material or a combination of parent plant material with seawater sulfates. Moisture contents are strongly connected with the sustainability of the coal use in the energy production, while their carbonation grade is strongly associated with their age and expressed by their reflectivity values. All these data have been inserted in an integrated database and can be useful for pre-mining or post mining activities (e.g. planning, analysis, management, restoration). Results of this study are available for the effective evaluation of the existing coal occurrences, which can be used with renewable energy sources providing sustainable solutions, in combination with the upcoming innovative CCS and CCU technologies. Results also showed that coals from the Mesohellenic Trough present excellent quality traits. However, their value as combustible coal is very low due to the absence of economically recoverable reserves. The largest coal lenticular bodies have been extracted in the past and the remaining occurrences do not exceed several thousand tones. Based upon existing literature and from geospatial estimations, coal deposits in the Mesohellenic Trough Basin cannot be considered as economically valuable for exploitation.

Abstract. Kartikasari A, Pristianto T, Hanintyo R, Ampou EE, Wibawa TA, Borneo BB. 2021. Representative benthic habitat mapping on Lovina coral reefs in Northern Bali, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 22: 4766-4774. Satellite optical imagery datasets integrated with in situ measurements are widely used to derive the spatial distribution of various benthic habitats in coral reef ecosystems. In this study, an approach to estimate spatial coverage of those habitats based on observation derived from Sentinel-2 optical imagery and a field survey, is presented. This study focused on the Lovina coral reef ecosystem of Northern Bali, Indonesia to support deployment of artificial reefs within the Indonesian Coral Reef Garden (ICRG) programme. Three specific locations were explored: Temukus, Tukad Mungga, and Baktiseraga waters. Spatial benthic habitat coverages of these three waters was estimated based on supervised classification techniques using 10m bands of Sentinel-2 imagery and the medium scale approach (MSA) transect method of in situ measurement.The study indicates that total coverage of benthic habitat is 61.34 ha, 25.17 ha, and 27.88 ha for Temukus, Tukad Mungga, and Baktiseraga waters, respectively. The dominant benthic habitat of those three waters consists of sand, seagrass, coral, rubble, reef slope and intertidal zone. The coral reef coverage is 29.48 ha (48%) for Temukus covered by genus Acropora, Isopora, Porites, Montipora, Pocillopora. The coverage for Tukad Mungga is 8.69 ha (35%) covered by genus Acropora, Montipora, Favia, Psammocora, Porites, and the coverage for Baktiseraga is 11.37 ha (41%) covered by genus Montipora sp, Goniastrea, Pavona, Platygyra, Pocillopora, Porites, Acropora, Leptoseris, Acropora, Pocillopora, Fungia. The results are expected to be suitable as supporting data in restoring coral reef ecosystems in the northern part of Bali, especially in Buleleng District.
