Oroantral communication (OAC) is a pathological communication between the oral cavity and the maxillary sinus. Numerous methods are described to manage an acute OAC with some adverse effect and limitations. Our comparative cross-sectional study tried to evaluate the efficacy of Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) by comparing with the Buccal advancement flap for the closure of acute OAC on 38 patients (n=38), were divided into two groups. One group treated by traditional Buccal advancement flap and compared with the group treated with PRF clot and membranes. Statistically significant better healing with less complication was observed (P< 0.05) in group treated with PRF clot and membranes considering as an effective way to manage acute oroantral communications.

Kata kunci: Pasien yang menjalani kemoterapi, komplikasi oralABSTRACTPatients undergoing chemotherapy often experience problems in oral cavity. This could be happen because the chemotherapy agents cause direct destructive effect on surrounding tissues of the oral cavity, also indirectly by inducing myelosuppression and immunosuppression. Oral complications are often found in patients undergoing chemotherapy is an oral mucositis, candidiasis, xerostomia, taste dysfunction and hemorrhage. The purpose of this research is to describe the oral complications that occur in patients who are undergoing chemotherapy at BLU RSUP Prof Dr. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado as well as the incidence of oral complications by age, gender, type of chemotherapy, duration of chemotherapy and other types of cancer experienced by these patients. The type of this research is descriptive with cross sectional study. Sampling was done by using purposive sampling with 64 samples were obtained by Cochran formula. The result showed that oral mucositis and xerostomia are the most oral complications experienced by patients after undergoing chemotherapy with an incidence of more than 60%. While other oral complications such as candidiasis, taste dysfunction and hemorrhage had an incidence of more than 25%. From the research, it is recommended to clinicians should pay more attention to a variety of oral complications arising in patients undergoing chemotherapy. Good cooperation between the patient, dentist and oncologist is very important to minimize the incidence of oral complications caused by chemotherapy treatment. Introduction: The palatogingival groove (PGG) is an anomaly which considered as a developmental defect. In 1908, this anomaly was first of all described by Black. According to him this palatogingival groove starts just beneath the cingulum and travels towards the apex from cementoenamel junction. Palatogingival groove presents variation in depth and length along the root. Objectives: To determine frequency of palatogingival groove in maxillary lateral incisors, as early diagnosis can prevent the development of caries and periodontitis. Study Design: Cross sectional study Setting: 500 adult patients were examined (1000 maxillary lateral incisors) which includes both genders aged 20-45 years, recruited from Operative Department, Ibn-e-Sina Hospital Multan. Period: Six months from Jan to June 2017. Material & Method: In patients oral cavity both right and left side were inspected and the groove extension was assorted into, coronal grooves (coronal to cement enamel junction), and apical grooves (extended to the root, beyond the cement enamel junction). Results: The PGG prevalence rate in the population has been reported to be between 2.8% and 8.5%. Conclusion: The frequency of palatogingival groove was 9%. Bilateralism of the PGGs was calculated and was found to be 62.2%. 30% caries was present in all cases. Palatogingival groove can cause marginal periodontitis, pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis. Early diagnosis can prevent the development of caries and periodontitis.

Background: Several systemic diseases manifest themselves in the oral cavity. Oral manifestations of lupus erythematosus (LE) are associated with a significantly increased risk of cancer. Dentists who are unaware of these lesions will possibly miss them. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence of oral manifestations in patients with LE in a sample of the Egyptian population. Methods: A descriptive study was performed on 189 patients attending the Internal Medicine Department, Rheumatology Clinic in EL Qasr EL Ainy Hospital, Cairo University. Every patient was examined clinically after completing a questionnaire. Moreover, patients’ medical records were also evaluated.  The oral manifestations were recorded according to the WHO guide to physical examination of the oral cavity and classified according to their morphologic aspects and localization. Results: Out of 189 patients, there were 182 females (96.3%) and seven males (3.7%). The prevalence of oral lesions in LE patients was 55.6%. The most affected site was the tongue 25.7%. The most common clinical aspect was patches, 53%. About 77.1% of the lesions were asymptomatic. 74.3% of the patients had oral candidiasis. The prevalence of skin lesions in LE patients was 37.6%. The most common finding was malar rash 79%. Conclusions: The present study emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis of oral lesions to recognize patients with LE as the WHO considers oral manifestations of LE a widespread state associated with an increased risk of cancer. Also, implementation of oral hygiene measures and treatment to improve patients’ nutritional state and health-related quality of life are recommended.

Despite free health care services in Saudi Arabia, the prevalence of caries in children is substantially greater in comparison to other high-income countries. Dental fear in children may be an important issue that needs attention. Therefore, the aim was to investigate the role of dental fear in predicting untreated dental caries in schoolchildren. This analytical cross-sectional study included children aged 8–10 years residing in Saudi Arabia. Dental status via oral examinations was surveyed with the WHO standardized chart and the Children Fear Survey Schedule—Dental Subscale was used to score dental fear. Descriptive, binary, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to report the findings at 5% statistical significance. Overall, there were 798 schoolchildren with an average fear score of 36. Nearly 70.4% reported fear of someone examining their mouth. About 76.9% had at least one carious tooth in their oral cavity. Children with dental fear were 1.8 times (OR = 1.80; 95%CI = 1.26, 2.56) more likely to have at least one untreated carious tooth in their oral cavity than those who did not express fear during oral examinations and dental procedures. Thus, the current study concludes that fear of dentists and dental treatment procedures successfully predicts untreated carious teeth in schoolchildren.
