The establishment of female inflorescence morphology is of great significance to the formation of final maize yield. defective ear1 (dea1) is a novel maize mutant with developmental defect of female inflorescence caused by natural variation. Morphological analysis revealed that the mutant dea1 was characterized as a “scar-like” crack on the adaxial side of the top of the ear, accounting for 28.6-100.0% of the ear length, with an average of 32.4%. The results of scanning electron microscope showed that there was collapse in the formation of paired spikelet primordium at the base of the axillary meristem. Most of investigated botanical and agronomical traits of dea1 were lower than those of wild type, except for ear length and hundred grain weight. The grain yield per ear of mutant dea1 was 35.93% lower than that of wild type, and the width of mutation crack contributed the most to the yield loss per ear. Abstract A 4-day-old girl with Posterior fossa anomalies, Haemangiomas of the head and neck, Arterial, Cardiovascular, and Eye anomalies and ventral developmental defect syndrome comprising a facial haemangioma, aortic coarctation at the aortic arch, torturous aortic aneurysm distal to coarctation, and ductus arteriosus originating proximal to the coarctation is presented. The aortic arch was successfully reconstructed without cardiopulmonary bypass, and she is currently doing well after 4 years and 8 months.

Development Defect of Enamel (DDE) although not common, can bring about serious sequelae and needs immediate action. If we leave the teeth untreated, many complications such as poor dental aesthetics, chipping of teeth and dental pain often set in. These complications are further aggravated if the patient has any coexisting medical issues, such as Global Developmental Delay (GDD). Children with GDD often exhibit poor oral health with an abundance of plaque that leads to caries and periodontal disease progression because of poor motor and cognitive development. Many of them also exhibit negative behaviour toward dental treatment. This case describes the dental care for a Global Developmental Delay (GDD) child with sporadic generalised Development Defect of Enamel (DDE). The case management touches on the appropriate behaviour guidance strategies used to aid the child’s unfavourable behaviour towards treatment and the restorative treatment performed to preserve the structural durability of the affected teeth in a general dental setting.

Maintaining proper epithelial cell density is essential for the survival of multicellular organisms. While regulation of cell density through apoptosis is well known, its mechanistic details remain elusive. Here, we report the involvement of membrane-anchored phosphatase of regenerating liver (PRL), originally known for its role in cancer malignancy, in this process. In epithelial MDCK cells, upon confluence, doxycycline-induced expression of PRL upregulated apoptosis, reducing the cell density. This could be circumvented by artificially reducing the cell density via stretching the cell-seeded silicon chamber. Moreover, siRNA-mediated knockdown of endogenous PRL blocked apoptosis, leading to greater cell density. Mechanistically, PRL promoted apoptosis by upregulating the translation of E-cadherin and activating TGF-β pathway. Morpholino-mediated inhibition of PRL expression in zebrafish embryos caused developmental defect with reduced apoptosis and increased epithelial cell density during convergent extension. This study revealed a novel role of PRL in regulating density-dependent apoptosis in vertebrate epithelium.

T cell development in the thymus undergoes the process of differentiation, selective proliferation and survival from CD4-CD8- double negative (DN) stage to CD4+CD8+ double positive (DP) stage prior to the formation of CD4+ helper and CD8+ cytolytic T cells ready for circulation. Each developmental stage is tightly regulated by sequentially-operating molecular networks, of which only limited numbers of transcription regulators have been deciphered. Here we identified Zfp335 transcription factor as a new player in the regulatory network controlling thymocyte development. We demonstrate that Zfp335 intrinsically controls DN to DP transition, as T cell-specific deficiency in Zfp335 leads to a substantial accumulation of DN3 along with reduction of DP, CD4+ and CD8+ thymocytes. This developmental blockade at DN stage results from the impaired intracellular TCRβ expression as well as increased susceptibility to apoptosis in thymocytes. Transcriptomic and ChIP-seq analyses revealed a direct regulation of transcription factors Bcl6 and Rorc by Zfp335. Importantly, enhanced expression of TCRβ and Bcl6/RorγT restores the developmental defect during DN3 to DN4 transition and improves thymocytes survival, respectively. These findings identify a critical role of Zfp335 in controlling T cell development by maintaining intracellular TCRβ expression-mediated β-selection and independently activating cell survival signaling.

There are situations where the subgingival margin of the restoration are unavoidable such as subgingival caries, fractures and resorption. The subgingival cavity margin creates various challenges during operative procedure and can affect periodontal health .Several restorative materials have been tried to restore cavities with subgingival margin. This paper will review the current approaches to the treatment of teeth involving root surfaces with caries, fractures, resorption and developmental defect with an objective to discuss clinical problems associated with deep subgingival margins and to have clear strategies of treatment approach in such situations.

Prolonged prenatal or adult exposure to ethanol is detrimental to mental and physical well-being, resulting in developmental abnormalities, progressive addiction and ultimate death. A growing number of studies have shown the therapeutic potential of cannabinoids in ethanol-related behaviors in mammals. However, the potential pharmacological actions of cannabinoids in ethanol responses have not been examined in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster. Here, we systematically investigated the effects of various cannabinoids on ethanol preference, ethanol sensitivity and tolerance, and ethanol-induced developmental defect in Drosophila. We showed that treatment with the phytocannabinoid cannabidiol (CBD) displayed a significant decrease in preference for consuming ethanol in adult flies. Interestingly, cannabinoids exhibited differential roles in short- and long- term ethanol tolerance in flies. Although cannabinoids had no detectable effects on short-term ethanol tolerance, CBD and the endocannabinoid anandamide (AEA) suppressed long-term tolerance to ethanol. Moreover, ethanol exposure delayed larval-to-pupal development and increased larval/pupal size. Unexpectedly, treatment with CBD or endocannabinoids did not attenuate ethanol-induced developmental delay, instead, exacerbated its detrimental effect. Thus, our systematical study reveals, for the first time, a differential role of the cannabinoids in the modulation of ethanol-related responses in Drosophila.

Abstract Background Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia is a developmental defect of the posterolateral portion of the diaphragm. This defect may allow abdominal contents to abnormally occupy the thoracic cavity, resulting in most cases in the compression of the developing lungs. Signs are typically shown during early childhood since the defect is usually present during development. In exceptional cases, however, Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia can be observed in asymptomatic adult patients, or in those whose initial diagnosis may include common respiratory pathologies such as asthma. Case presentation Here we describe the case of a 31-year-old Mestizo female patient admitted to the emergency room owing to sudden onset of pain in the left hypochondrium and in epigastrium, as well as signs of respiratory distress. Soon after admission, the patient entered cardiorespiratory arrest, and advanced cardiac life support was provided for 45 minutes without success. The patient was declared dead 1 hour 40 minutes after admission. Clinical autopsy concluded that cause of death was respiratory failure as a complication of a previously undiagnosed Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia. Conclusions We report an exceptional case of Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia as the cause of rapid-onset respiratory failure and death in an adult. Unfortunately, due to its unusual presentation, Bochdalek diaphragmatic hernia is rarely considered among the list of differential diagnoses when admitting an adult patient with respiratory symptoms. By reporting this case, we encourage the medical community and trainees to consider diaphragmatic defects when approaching a patient with sudden onset of abdominal pain with concomitant respiratory symptoms.

Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is a developmental defect in the diaphragm that allows abdominal viscera to herniate into the thoracic cavity. Pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension are consequences of this disease process. The incidence is approximately 2.4–4.1/10,000 births, and survival rate is estimated at 70–90 percent. To avoid potentially devastating delays in care, it is crucial that neonatal nurses and care providers in both tertiary and nontertiary care centers be familiar with the pathogenesis of CDH and the standard of care for initial stabilization of the neonate. Novel fetal and postnatal surgical repair techniques are also described here.

ABSTRACT Developmental defect of enamel (DDE) is a defect on the surface of the enamel layer thatoccurs during tooth development due to various genetic and environmental factors. Defects that occurresult in changes in color and texture on the enamel surface so that it interferes with aesthetics. Thedefect level that happens can be classified based on the DDE index to determine the option of a casetreatment plan consisting of enamel microabrasion, conservative aesthetic restoration, and bleaching.This review aims to analyze and review studies related to DDE in primary and permanent teeth. Anelectronic search was conducted through PubMed/Medline, Google Scholar, Semantic Scholar,SpringerLink, and Wiley Online Library using the keywords “defect email”, “developmental defectemail”, and “defect on primary teeth” for research published between January 2011 and April 2020, thesame article was eliminated, the initial search resulted in a total of 55 articles. The exclusion of articleswas carried out based on the title and abstract so that finally, 45 relevant articles were obtained. Threestudies were included in this review for qualitative analysis. The results show that Enamel (DDE)Developmental defects can occur in both primary and permanent teeth with the same prevalence rate.
