Abstract Background Although less frequent than in adults, taste loss also occurs in childhood. “Taste Strips” are frequently used for diagnosing taste dysfunction; however, normative values are lacking for children. In this study, we will create normative values for the “Taste Strips” in children. Methods This cross-sectional study included 609 children aged 6–15 years. “Taste Strips” were used to determine sweet, sour, salty, and bitter taste scores by a non-forced procedure. The 10th percentile was used to distinguish normal taste function from a reduced sense of taste. Multivariable generalized linear models (GLM) were estimated to study the effect of age (group), sex, and 6‐n‐propylthiouracil (PROP) status on taste function. Results Taste function changed with age, allowing for a distinction of three age groups: (I) 6–7 years, (II) 8–9 years, and (III) 10–15 years. Normative values were created for the age groups and boys and girls separately. Additionally, GLM showed a significant effect of (1) age (group) on sweet, salty, bitter, and total taste scores; (2) sex on sweet, sour, and total taste scores; and (3) PROP status on total taste scores. Conclusions This study provided normative values for the “Taste Strips” in children, highlighting age- and sex-related differences. Impact Taste dysfunction can be harmful and impacts quality of life, a topic that became increasingly important since the COVID-19 pandemic. Although taste dysfunction is thought to be rare in childhood, the detrimental impact of such dysfunction might be large, as children’s eating habits are strongly influenced by input from the chemical senses. Measuring taste function may elucidate the relationship between taste dysfunction and disease, fostering the development of more appropriate supportive strategies. However, adequate tools are lacking for children. Normative values of the “Taste Strips” are now available for children, which bolster the clinical utility of this test.

Background: Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MS) are prevalent and associated with negative health outcomes in the elderly. There is a need to identify risk factors for these diseases in this population. Methodology: The 2013-14 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was used in this study. Adults aged 60 or under were categorized into normosmia, hyposmia, anosmia, and combined anosmia + hyposmia using the Pocket Sniff Test. Taste was evaluated using quinine and NaCl solutions. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to characterize associations between smell and taste status and obesity and MS. Results: In univariate obesity analysis, normosmia, combined anosmia + hyposmia, and 0.32M NaCl taste dysfunction were significant. 0.32M NaCl taste dysfunction remained significant in multivariate analysis. MS was significantly associated with only tongue tip quinine dysfunction in univariate and multivariate analyses. Conclusions: Salty taste dysfunction was found to be negatively associated with obesity while bitter taste dysfunction was found to be positively associated with MS.

ABSTRACT Introduction Traumatic brain injury (TBI) entails chronic neurological symptoms and deficits, such as smell and taste impairment. In the general population, a prevalence of 13.5% for smell impairment, 17% for taste impairment, and 2.2% for both have been reported. Studies establishing prevalence of sensorial dysfunction in the U.S. general population showed that prevalence increased with age and was higher in ethnic minorities and men. To understand the mechanisms that lead to these deficits, the prevalence of sensory dysfunction was studied in the Veteran TBI population of the VA Caribbean Healthcare System (VACHS). The aims were to find the prevalence of sensorial dysfunction in smell and/or taste in TBI patients at the VACHS Polytrauma Clinic and its association with demographic characteristics and medical comorbidities. The hypothesis was that the prevalence of sensory dysfunction in smell and/or taste of VACHS Veterans (mostly Hispanics minority) with TBI will be higher than the one historically reported in the literature for the U.S. general population. Materials and Methods A retrospective record review was held at the VACHS Polytrauma Clinic from January 2018 to January 2020 (before coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic) to evaluate the prevalence of sensory dysfunction. Data on demographics and comorbidities in the electronic medical records, and the TBI Second-Level Evaluation note, that was previously completed by a physician from the Polytrauma Clinic at the VACHS to diagnose and characterized the TBI event, were reviewed. Data were summarized using descriptive statistics. To establish the relation among demographic characteristics and comorbidities with the prevalence of smell and/or taste sensory dysfunction, chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests were used. Results A total of 81 records were reviewed. This corresponded to all the patients diagnosed with TBI in the VACHS Polytrauma Clinic from January 2018 to January 2020. The prevalence of sensory dysfunction in the studied population was 38.3%. Men tend to present a higher prevalence of smell and/or taste dysfunction (40.0%) in comparison with women (16.7%); however, the difference did not achieve statistical significance (P = .399). Hispanics had a relatively higher prevalence of sensory dysfunction than non-Hispanics, but this difference did not reach statistical significance (P = .210). Forty-nine subjects were combat Veterans (60.5%). There was a significant correlation regarding the combat status of the subjects (P = .014), where 24 of the 49 combat Veterans presented smell and/or taste dysfunction (49.0%). A marginal significance was observed for obesity; obese participants were less likely to have a significant smell and/or taste dysfunction (P = .053). Conclusion The investigators found that the prevalence of sensory dysfunction in smell and/or taste in VACHS Veterans with TBI was 38.3% (n = 31). A significant association was found between smell and/or taste dysfunction and being a combat veteran (P = .018). A marginally significant association to obesity was also observed (P = .053). To the scientific community, the results will serve as a base for sensorial dysfunction and TBI research given that this prevalence, and the correlation to demographics and comorbidities, has not been fully established in the Veteran population.

Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have become known to present with different oral symptoms. However, xerostomia remains poorly recognized compared with taste dysfunction. For better understanding of COVID-19 symptomatology, xerostomia associated withCOVID-19 was characterized and its possible pathogenesis was speculated by a narrative literature review. Scientific articles were retrieved by searching PubMed, LitCovid, ProQuest, Google Scholar, medRxiv and bioRxiv from 1 April 2020 with a cutoff date of 30 September 2021. Results of the literature search indicated that xerostomia is one of prevalent and persistent oral symptoms associated with COVID-19. In contrast to taste dysfunction, the prevalence and persistence of xerostomia do not necessarily depend on ethnicity, age, gender and disease severity of patients. COVID-19 xerostomia is pathogenically related to viral cellular entry-relevant protein expression, renin-angiotensin system disturbance, salivary gland inflammation, zinc deficiency, cranial neuropathy, intercurrent taste dysfunction, comorbidities and medications. Despite a close association with COVID-19, xerostomia, dry mouth and hyposalivation tend to be overlooked unlike ageusia, dysgeusia and hypogeusia. Although mouth dryness per se is not life-threating, it has an impact on the oral health-related quality of life. More attention should be paid to xerostomia in COVID-19 patients and survivors.

Chemosenses are frequently reported in patients with chemosensory impairment.The present investigation intends to clarify whether there are differential pacts onsymptoms of depression between the types (smell dysfunction, taste dysfunction,and combination smell and taste dysfunction), severe- ity, length or source ofdysfunction. At the same time, diminished olfaction input and taste appear tohave a detrimental influence on emotional dysfunction aggravation. In patientswith mixed olfactory or gustatory dysfunction in clinical practice, earlymanagement should be considered for depressure symptoms. The current studysought to compare depressive symptoms in patients with mixedolfactory/gustatory dysfunction, purely olfactory disorder, and gustatorydisorder, as well as to investigate the relationships between chemosensoryfunction and depressive symptoms in various groups.

In March 2020, the Global Consortium of Chemosensory Research (GCCR) was founded by chemosensory researchers to address then emerging reports of unusual smell and taste dysfunction arising from the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Over the next year, the GCCR used a highly collaborative model, along with contemporary Open Science practices, to produce multiple high impact publications on chemosensation and COVID19. This invited manuscript describes the founding of the GCCR, the tools and approaches it used, and a summary of findings to date. These findings are contextualized within a summary of some of the broader insights about chemosensation (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) and COVID19 gained over the last 18 months, including potential mechanisms of loss. Also, it includes a detailed discussion of some current Open Science approaches and practices used by the GCCR to increase transparency, rigor, and reproducibility.
