In Indonesia, strawberry is one of fruits which has high economic values. The growth of strawberry has increased significantly, but its productivity is still low because of disease attack. Disease that attacks strawberry started from nursery to post harvest is anthracnose that can be caused by Colletotrichum spp. Control efforts of anthracnose disease up to now has been done with application of synthetic chemicals which are known to be hazardous to the environment and human health. Betel leaf (Piper betle L.) is natural plant that potentially used as phytofungicide. Essential oils on betel leaf extract is reported can decrease the growth of pathogenic fungi. The objectives of the research were to identify Colletotrichum spp. in strawberry fruit that showed anthracnose symptoms, to test the potency of betel leaf extract as phytofungicide, and to evaluate the effect of betel leaf extract in inhibiting infection and disease severity of Colletotrichum in strawberry. Samples were taken from strawberry nursery in Magelang, Indonesia. The disease symptoms were isolated on Potato Dextrose Agar, followed by identification of fungal colony and morphology by semi permanent slide preparation. Betel leaves were extracted with water to get a concentration of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%, respectively. An in vitro experiment was done to evaluate the inhibition rate of betel leaf extract to the growth of Colletotrichum spp. colony. An in vivo experiment was done by submersion of strawberry to betel leaf extract before (preventive method) and after antrachnose attack (curative method), then disease infection and disease severity were measured after 7 days. The result of the research showed that anthracnose disease in strawberry was caused by C. gloeosporioides (Penz.). Twenty percent of betel leaf extract in an in vitro test had potential as phytofungicide and concentration of 100% betel leaf extract was the best concentration to inhibit the growth of C. gloeosporioides (Penz.) colony by 70.26±0,61%. In an in vivo experiment, submersion of strawberry before pathogen infection (preventive) with 100% betel leaf extract decreased disease infection by 40% and disease severity by 16%, respectively. While treatment of submersion of strawberry after pathogen infection (curative) decreased disease infection by 33,4% and disease severity by 17%.

Keywords: strawberry, anthrachnose, disease, betel leaf

Antioxidant activities of essential oils from leaves of Piper betle L. (T) and Cleistocalyx operculatus L. (V), and aerial parts of Ageratum conyzoides L. (H) natively grown in Thua Thien Hue province of Vietnam were investigated.Quantitative structure–activity relationship (QSAR) model was constructed from the 27 compounds including 4-hydroxy-chromene-2H-one and its derivatives. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity was applied to estimate the antioxidant property of these essential oils through IC50 (mg/mL) values. QSAR model is used to predict the radical scavenging activity IC50 mg/mL of T, V, and H. The results indicate that there is a good agreement between the experimental data and the predicted values using the QSAR model. The three essential oils display the DPPH radical scavenging activities with the IC50 values being in the order of T > H > V of 3.71 mg/mL,596.44 mg/mL and 637.03 mg/mL, respectively. The essential oil of T exhibits the strong DPPH radical scavenging activity that is close to the reference compound ascorbic acid (IC50 value of 3.03 mg /mL).

Pinto peanut (Arachis pintoi) considered as a perennial legume animal fed plant with good soil fertility improvement was uesed for its allelopathy that had been reported on the germination of Ageratum conyzoides L, Comnyza canadensis L. Cronq., Bidens pilosa L., Solanum lycopersicum and Capsicum annum. through the solutions extracted from different parts of pinto peanut on mustard greens (Brassica juncea), barnyardgrass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and junglerice (Echinochloa colonum). Consideration of the growth of hypocotyls and rootlets at 48 hours after incubation with pinto peanut extracts, results showed that 1.0 g/ml of the methanolic pinto peanut stem extract greatly inhibited 100% mustard greens growth, 77.7% and 93.5% the hypocotyls and rootlets growth of barnyardgrass, 57.2% and 92.7% the hypocotyls and rootlets growth of junglerice, respectively. The allelopathic activity after liquid-liquid extraction of the ethyl acetate phase greater than the aqueous phase. Allelopathic extract loading from C18 chromatographic column was purified by HPLC to obtain 6 phenolic compounds with the contents in 1 g fresh pinto peanut weight were 0.214 μg (cinamic acid), 0.8344 μg (caffeic acid), 7.7676 μg (coumaric acid), 2.2354 μg (ferullic acid), 0.045 μg (2-4 dimehydroxy benzoic) and 32.1162 μg (salicylic acid). These results should be accordingly considered in the production of biological herbicides.

The Loss of crop productivity can reach 30-35% if not use pesticide. The other hand, to use of pesticides can be caused environmental problems and human healthy. This research aims to develop biopesticides for pests and plant diseases. It was conducted at the PEM laboratory UIN Suska Riau and on land, from July to November 2015. The sourches were extracts from Andropogon nardus, Annona muricata leaves, Ageratum conyzoides, Piper aduncun fructus, Nicotiana tabacum leaves, Tinospora crispa, Azadirachta indica leaves, Allium sativum and Piper betle leaves. Each the source was macerated in alcohol 50% for 24 hours and then distilled at a temperature of 60 °C until all the alcohol evaporates. The experimental Design was complete random design with 7 treatments (control, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100% and chemical pesticides as positif control) and 3 replicates. Parameters of the test biopesticides to disease performed in vitro with measure the resistance zones and for mealybugs and Gryllus assimilis in vivo with the pest mortality. Biopesticide test in vitro for the bacteria that causes carrot root rot has not been able to kill microbes. The mortality rate mealybugs begins before 1 hour observation at the treatment biopesticide concentration of 80%, 100% and control positif. Provision of different concentrations of biopesticides, does not the increased mortality of Gryllus assimilis. This shows that the power to kill biopesticide still well below chemical pesticides, but the pest is still alive no appetite as antifeedant effect of the biopesticide. So biopesticide application does not have to kill the target pest. Need follow-up and development of this research and other pests.
