Abstract Studies have evidenced the importance the first years of the teaching career in the formative processes. This article discusses the professional knowledge of beginning teachers of the Elementary and Primary School. It is based on research developed during 2001-2005. One can said that the teaching cases used in the research allowed the beginning teachers to describe and analyze their own professional trajectories. The teachers exposed doubts, certainties, mistakes and contradictions that guided and characterized their professional practice. Teachers pointed out the knowledge regarding the way they teach mathematical and Portuguese written language contents. Keywords: teacher education; beginning teachers.

This article reviews the case method from an historical perspective and explores why and how "decision" cases might be used by teacher educators in the professional preparation of teachers as reflective ESOL specialists. It is argued that the case method can sharpen the critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills of both novice and experienced teachers and help ready them for the complex challenges they could face in the world of professional practice. Enthusiasm for this methodology, however, is tempered with words of caution about the difficulties involved in implementing case-based learning in teacher education programs. Guidelines for selecting and using"decision" cases are provided and recommendations are made for future developments in case-based teaching and learning in TESOL. Three appendixes include sources for teaching cases and details about a working conference for case facilitators and writers.

AbstractAspects of environment are common topics in Australian primary schools. However Education for Sustainability (EfS), where students actively investigate the underlying causes of unsustainable practices and actively plan for and instigate change, is less well understood and less commonly practised. It cannot be assumed that pre-service teachers have the knowledge, skills and desire to incorporate EfS, as advocated in Australian policies, into their repertoires of practice, or, that they will acquire those skills as they gain teaching experience. Therefore for EfS to become an integral component of the primary school experience, carefully planned rather than ad hoc preparation for EfS is necessary in pre-service teacher education. This essentially qualitative study describes how a one-semester, final year pre-service primary teacher unit in EfS was shaped, and reports on how a cohort of pre-service teachers responded, particularly in terms of how well prepared they felt to engage with EfS in future teaching. Although motivation and confidence to engage with EfS varied across the cohort, pre-service teacher education appeared to make a positive contribution to both. In a longitudinal design, five teachers who had participated in the EfS unit became the focus of individual case studies early in their teaching careers. Each case study investigated ways in which the beginning teacher engaged with EfS, linking teaching decisions to pre-service teacher education. The constructivist approach adopted by the tutors was particularly valued by the early career teachers. They appreciated various modes of experiential learning including engagement with the kinds of teaching strategies advocated in EfS and a strong orientation to the curriculum requirements of primary school. However, the extent to which each early career teacher implemented EfS was tempered not only by personal skill and motivation, but also by work situations which did not necessarily support EfS endeavours. While pre-service teacher education has a vital role in the promulgation of EfS in schools, and this study shows that it can be effective in advancing the desires of beginning teachers to do something for the environment, there are broad implications for the institutions that so heavily impact on the capacity of school systems and university systems to act in EfS.

In the 2000s, several major education reforms have been implemented in Norway. The reform in the teacher education is heavily inspired by the Finnish model, with introduction of a new research-based content, with the aim of developing a new type of professional knowledge, as a basis for teachers’ professional practice. Drawing on Maton’s Legitimation Code Theory, this paper explores the tensions in the new Norwegian teacher education, between knowledge and ways of knowing, by examining students’ practices, expressed in students’ research and development papers in the new teacher education. The paper refutes a one-dimensional concept of experience-based practical knowledge in the teacher education and argues that professional knowledge is based on practices that are informed by specialized and theoretical knowledge.

Teacher training processes must incorporate a reflective dimension as a strategy for professional development. The pursuit of a professional identity and the need to give personal meaning to theoretical principles grounds the emergence of young teachers' reflection. In this chapter, multimodal narrative (MN) is presented as a tool to support reflexive approaches in the development of teachers' professional knowledge. The data collected about the perspectives of student teachers and supervisors who experienced the use of MN show the interest of these actors about the tool and about the processes of its use. This chapter presents and discusses constraints identified throughout the pilot study of using a MN in teacher training that the authors developed. It also presents a proposal for the use of MN in the context of initiation of the professional practice that includes an adapted version of the MN tool and a phased process of its use.

In the present day scenario prime need of Ayurveda is practical applicability of Ayurvedic fundamental principles and research should be more focused on all aspects where scientific inputs should confirm Ayurveda’s principles and philosophy. In Ayurveda, Gunas are described as the way of presentation of action without which no Karma (action) can be possible. Ayurveda has provided significance to every Guna so that they become useful in clinical practice. Clinical practice or research is a continuous process including a series of events which need to be performed in a sequential manner. Though there are many factors on which accomplishment of treatment depends, among these Charaka has given prime importance to Paradi Gunas. In clinical practice, Guna which are to be with Bhishak are mainly the Paradi Gunas which can also be called as miscellaneous Gunas. As rightly quoted by Acarya Charaka, for getting success in the treatment Paradi Gunas are the best. The Sutra quotes "Sidhyupaya Chikitsayam" which means that Chikitsa i.e. Dhatusamya will be done mainly with the help of Paradi Gunas. Knowledge of Paradi Gunas are required to be present in pharmacists, physicians and Researchers. Acharya Charaka says that Chikitsa Siddhi i.e. successful management of disease is not possible without the knowledge of Paradi Gunas. Paradi Gunas play an important role in selection, adaption and manifestation of drug as per condition of the disease and the patient in particular Desha and Kala. The ultimate goal of any clinical activity is to contribute in the knowledge domain and to improve professional practice. Thus this literary review of Paradi Gunas serves to explore the subject of the clinical practice.
