THE EFFECT OF APPLYING CLUSTERING TECHNIQUE ON THE STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENT IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH

This study attempts to investigate the effect of applying clustering technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph. The research design of this study was an experimental one. The population of this study was grade VII of MTSs Al Abraar totaling to 60 students of two parallel classes. The data were obtained from random sampling technique through lottery. The class VII-A became the experimental group and was given the treatment by using clustering technique while class VII-B became control group and was given treatment without using clustering technique. The instrument of collecting data was writing test and inter-rater was used to obtain the reliability of the test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. It was also obtained that tobserved is higher than ttable (1.760 > 1.673) at the level of significance (α = 0.05) and degree of freedom (df) = 58. It means that null hypothesis was successfully rejected and alternative hypothesis was accepted. As the conclusion, there is a significant effect of applying clustering technique on the students’ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph.

This study is an attempt to discover the effect of applying Group Investigation Method on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The Population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMAN 11 Medan which consists of nine parallel classes with the total number of students is 286. The samples of this research were taken by random sampling through lottery technique. The result was class X IPA 1 consisted of 33 students became the experimental group and class X IPA 3 consisted of 31 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by using Group Investigation Method while the control group was taught by using Conventional Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The result shows that the value of t­-observed (3.733) is higher than the value of t-table (2.000) (α = 0.05) with the degree of freedom (df) = 62. It means that there is a significant effect of applying Group investigation Method on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

The objective of the study is to discover the effect of applying Discussion Strategy on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. The study was conducted by using experimental research design. The samples were taken by using random technique through lottery and two out of 7 classes were taken into samples, X-1 as experimental group was taught Discussion Strategy and X-3 as control group was taught Conventional Strategy, each class has 30 students. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t0 (3,561) with the degree of freedom (df)=58 at the level of significance p (0,05) = 2,004. It means that t0 was considerably higher than tt (3,561 > 2,004). The result showed that Discussion Strategy had a significant effect on students’ writing achievement. So, the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted.

This study aims to discover the effect of applying Semantic Mapping Strategy on students’ speaking achievement. It will be conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research is the eight (VIII) grade students of SMP Budi Murni 3. The samples of the research are two classes divided into two groups, experimental and control group which will be chosen by using random sampling technique. Thirty-one students will be taken as the samples. The experimental group will be taught by using Semantic Mapping Strategy, while the control group will be taught by without using Semantic Mapping Strategy. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of tobserved was 3,12 with the degree of freedom (df)=60 at the level of significance p (0,05) = 2,000. It means that tobserved is higher than ttable (3,12>2,000). The result of this study shows that Semantic Mapping Strategy is significant effect on students’ speaking achievement.

This study aims to discover the effect of debate technique on grade XI students’ speaking achievement. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the elepent ( XI ) grade students of MA Swasta Robitotul Istiqomah Huristak. The samples of the research were two classes which consisted of experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. They are consist of 57 students. The experimental group was taught by using Debate Technique, while the control group was taught without using Debate Technique. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of tobserved was 0,13 with the degree of freedom (df)=55 at the level of significance a(0,05) = 2,004. It means that tobserved was lower than ttable (0,13>2,004). The result of this study showed that Debate Technique was not significantly affect on students’ speaking achievement.

The objective of the study was to investigate if using video significantly affectedstudents’ achievement in writing procedure text. This study was conducted byexperimental research. The population of the study was all the students of gradeIX of SMP Negeri 5 Sipahutar with the total number of the students was 96 inclasses. There were 64 students chosen as the sample by using random samplingtechnique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group andexperimental group. The experimental group was taught by using video andcontrol group was taught without using video. The instrument for collecting datawas writing test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied PearsonProduct Formula. The calculation showed that the reliability of the test is 0.87. Itwas categorized very high reliability. The data were analyzed by using t-testformula. The result of analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t table(3.50>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 the degree of freedom 62. It means thatthe alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected.Based on the findings of this study, it found that there is a significant effect ofusing video on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.

This study aims to discover the effect of applying sentence Combining Technique on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the eight (VIII) grade students of SMP Swasta Prayatna Medan with eight parallel classes. The samples of the research were 20% of the totaling number of students divided into two groups, experimental and control group which were chosen by using random sampling technique. Seventy two students were taken as the samples. The experimental group was taught by using Sentence Combining Technique, while the control group was taught by using conventional teaching. The instrument for collecting the data was a writing test. Pearson Product Moment formula was applied to obtain the reliability of the test. Based on the calculation, it shows that the reliability of the test was 0.86 categorized as high reliability. Then, after analyzing the data, it was found that the value of tobserved was 5.57 with the degree of freedom (df)=70 at the level of significance (α = 0.05). It means that tobserved is higher than ttable (5.57 > 1.67). The result of this study shows that Sentence Combining Technique has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text.

This study aims at investigating the effect of using Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on Students’ Achievement in Writing Recount Text. This study was conducted by experimental research. The population of this study was the students of the tenth grade of SMA SWASTA SULTAN ISKANDAR MUDA MEDAN. The total number of the population was one hundred sixty students in 6 classes. There were sixty students chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. The sample was divided into two groups, namely control group and experimental group. The experimental group was taught by using CTL Method and control group was taught without using CTL Method. The instrument for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result of the analysis shows that t-observed value is higher than t-table (2.34>2.00) at level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom 58. It means that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted and null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected. Based on the findings of this study, it was found that there is a significant effect of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) Method on students’ achievement in writing recount text. This research was done due to the lack of students' motivation in writing in MTsN 1 Agam. To find out whether there was a significant effect of using Powtoon toward students' motivation in writing, the hypothesis was formulated. This quantitative research was classified into experimental research. The sampling technique used in this research was cluster random sampling. Two groups were selected as the sample of the research that was separated into experimental group and control group. There were 37 students as the respondents in the experimental group and 34 students as the respondents in the control group. The experimental class was taught by using Powtoon as media in teaching and the control group was taught only by using an English book. The result of paired sample t-test showed that the obtained (4,722) was higher than ttable (2,028) for the degree of freedom 36 with the level significant 0,025. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It means there is a significant effect of using Powtoon toward students' motivation in writing at the eighth grade of MTsN 1 Agam. The researcher proved that the Powtoon as a media was able to increase students' motivation in writing.

This study was aimed to find out the effect of  Team  Assisted Individualization (TAI) method on students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the first (X) grade students of SMA Al-Hidayah Medan. It consisted of  104 students with 3 parallel classes. Students were chosen as the sample by using random sampling technique. There were two randomized groups, namely experimental group and control group. Class X-1 with 36 students became the experimental group while class X-2 with 36 students became control group. The Experimental group was taught by using Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) method and the control group was taught without a treatment. The instrument which was used for collecting the data was writing test. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. The result showed that the mean of score in post-test for experimental group ( 68.48) ) was higher than control group (66.53). The value of tobserved (2.94) is higher than the value of ttable (1.994) (a = 0.05 ) with the degree of freedom (df) = 70. So, alternative hypotheis (Ha) was accepted and the Team Assisted Individualization (TAI) method significantly affected students’ achievement in writing descriptive text. Keywords : Team-Assisted Indiividualization, Writing Descriptive Text
