The paper is devoted to the role of wood in the art of furniture. The work traces the typological relationship of certain types of furniture designed in the twentieth century with the prototypes of the XVIII and XIX centuries. The paper argues about the possibilities of the material for creating aesthetically significant furniture samples. The stage in recognizing the new possibilities of technologically processed wood is the furniture by J. Summers, which revealed the possibility of designing a chair from a single sheet of plywood “in one piece” without structural connections. H. Peak, C. Mollino, Ch. R. Eames, S. Yanagi worked in the same direction. Chipboard is the last of the materials discussed in the paper. The appeal to the archaic box-type design was laid in the works by Rietveld, M. Bill, and G. Gugelot. In the wake of the architecture, deconstruction in the furniture design can be seen in the works by F. and W. Campana.

This essay examines a polemic between two Baudelaire critics of the 1930s, Jean Cassou and Benjamin Fondane, which centered on the relationship of poetry to progressive politics and metaphysics. I argue that a return to Baudelaire's poetry can yield insight into what seems like an impasse in Cassou and Fondane. Baudelaire provides the possibility of realigning metaphysics and politics so that poetry has the potential to become the space in which we can begin to think the two of them together, as opposed to seeing them in unresolvable tension. Or rather, the tension that Baudelaire animates between the two allows us a new way of thinking about the role of esthetics in moments of political crisis. We can in some ways see Baudelaire as responding, avant la lettre, to two of his early twentieth-century readers who correctly perceived his work as the space that breathes a new urgency into the questions of how modern poetry relates to the world from which it springs and in which it intervenes.

This chapter examines how Kansas became a bastion of Protestant Republican conservatism. The 1850s saw the first alliances between Republicans and Methodists in Kansas. The relationship of religion to politics that emerged in those years continued through the end of the nineteenth century—and shaped much of what happened in the twentieth century. The relationships between churches and public affairs in Kansas were complicated because Kansans were divided about the state being free or having slavery. Nearly all these complications were evident as Kansas moved toward statehood. The chapter first considers Abraham Lincoln's visit to the Kansas Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church in Atchison during his presidential campaign in 1859 before discussing the role of the churches in establishing civic order in the region's towns and farming communities. It also explores public religion, how abolition and temperance brought church leaders and politics together, and church expansion in Kansas.

Abstract Byron Lands in Korea : Translation and Literary/Cultural Changes in Early Twentieth-Century Korea — This article deals with the role of translation during the formative phase of modern Korean poetry. Most scholars think that the work of poet/translators of the early twentieth century like Ch'oe Namson emphasized transmitting a message rather than technique. I assert that we need to re-examine the crucial relationship of the new poetic rhythms and images used by Ch'oe and the development of modern Korean poetic forms in the 1920s.

In the twentieth century the question of the relationship of Terence's Heautontimorumenos to its Greek original has been largely neglected or else dismissed on the grounds that it presents no major problem. It is true that, because of the new light which the discovery of the Cairo codex of Menander shed on the nature and role of the chorus in Greek new comedy, there was a flurry of activity concerning the difficult passage 167 ff.; but the far more fundamental problem of contaminatio in general and of the meaning and interpretation of lines 4 to 6 of the play's prologue has attracted comparatively little attention. H. Marti produced a two-part survey of work done on Terence in the years 1909 to 1959; in it he says that in the period under review the question of contaminatio in Heauton–in the sense of the fusion of two originals –has been totally abandoned, with the exception of one article by F. Skutsch in which he holds to his earlier views on the subject. Marti also refers to Kohler's earlier work on the same problem, and to the discussion to be found in Kuiper's more comprehensive work on Roman comedy, but that is all.

This chapter focuses on the purpose of the Jews in relation to the potential and meaning of nationhood, in both Zionist and non-Zionist contexts. It talks about Moses Hess, a writer in Germany in the 1860s, who linked a profoundly negative view of the Jews' diasporic role as arch-capitalists to his irenic view of the role of the Jews in his Zionist vision of the future. It explains how a Zionist grappling with the idea of Jewish exemplarity runs through the twentieth-century history of the movement. This chapter also highlights the cultural Zionism of Ahad Ha'am and the political rhetoric of David Ben-Gurion, who repeatedly invoked Isaiah's “light unto the nations” as his vision for the Jewish state. It analyzes the relationship of Jewish exemplarity and purpose to the broader political life of the nation state that became a rich and complicated seam of debate within twentieth century thought.

The focus on rationalism in Habad leads us to consider another aspect of the nature of hasidism: what, if anything, is the role of the individual? The crucial relationship of the hasid with the tsadik immediately presents the contemporary mind with the question of personal freedom and individuality. An early twentieth-century Yiddish song, ‘And when the Rebbe sings, all the hasidim sing’, describes the hasidim as imitating their rebbe. In another stereotype, based on contemporary observable fact, the hasid would not take a job, move to a new home, or decide to get married without first asking the rebbe. These images obviously run counter to a central theme of modernity: the autonomy and independence of the individual. To what extent do hasidic followers see themselves as individuals? How might this question relate to the history of hasidism, and to its context in Western culture?

The relationship of such key macroeconomic concepts as the monetary system and the national economy in extreme economic situations (in the “military economy”) has been di sclosed. During the process of analyzing the works of Russian scientists of the early twentieth century, the specifics of the monetary instruments of market regulation in the conditions of the “military economy” and the change in the structure of the monetary mass have been considered. It has been shown, that the classical forms of credit (military loans, taxes), due to their low efficiency, give way to credit money, which during the demonetization of gold, play the role of a financial resource (“bills of exchange for the future”).

Statement of the problem. The thinking of a performer is conditioned by the organology and “sound image” of his instrument, which gives rise to questions about how flexible is the individual style of musicians who have mastered several instruments. Especially when it comes to performers who turn to related instruments, playing techniques of which are sometimes mutually exclusive. Analysis of recent research and publication. The research is based on works, the subject of which is the study of: 1) the sound image of the instrument (N. Riabukha, I. Sukhlenko and N. Kuchma); 2) the specifics of the organology of keyboard instruments and the regularities of interpretation of Baroque era works (N. Sikorska, M. Latcham, J. Chapman, R. Cypess, J. E. O. La Rosa and C. Wagner); 3) issues of music interpretation (H. J. Hinrichsen). Main objective of the study is to identify the role of keyboard instruments in the system of R. Tureck’s individual performing style. The scientific novelty is to create a holistic creative portrait of R. Tureck. Research methodology focuses on the relationship of special methods of analysis: comparative, systematic, stylistic and interpretive. Results. The American pianist, teacher, writer, lecturer R. Tureck was a representative of the generation of musicians of the twentieth century who became famous due to their interpretations of J. S. Bach’s legacy. At the same time, she was one of those who responded to the changes that happened in academic musical art under the influence of the development of sound recording and electronic instruments. Under the guidance of L. Theremin, she studied for a year to play the theremin and synthesizer of the inventor, and since the late 60’s of the twentieth century she played various models of Moog synthesizer. R. Tureck also collaborated with the famous American scientist Hugo Benioff to create an electronic piano. It was concluded that R. Tureck’s interest in electronic instruments, which influenced her performing thinking, can be explained by the fact that: 1. R. Tureck tried to bring J.S. Bach’s music to modern sounding. 2. This was a feature of her individual creative style. 3. She dreamed of creating a new concert instrument. Conclusions. R. Tureck mastered all the existing keyboard music instruments at that time and participated in the creation of a new one. This experience enriched the sound of her interpretations and confirmed the fact that the desire to recreate the deep sense of music works by Baroque era composers does not imply the rejection of the sound of modern instruments.

This study aimed to explore the relationships between attachment styles, proximity, and relational satisfaction. This was achieved by assessing a distinct type of long distance romantic relationship of flying crews, compared with proximal (non-flying crew) romantic relationships. The responses of 139 expatriate professionals revealed significant associations between proximity and anxious and avoidant attachment dimensions. The role of the avoidant dimension in comparison with that of the anxious dimension was found to be a significant predictor of relational satisfaction. This study contributes significantly toward addressing the role of proximity and attachment in relational satisfaction in a new context of geographic separation.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study is to examine and analyze the influence of the role, ethics, and independence of internal auditors in implementing good university governance (GUG) with leadership style as a moderation variable. Multiple linear regression and moderation regression analysis models are used to test the hypothesis. The primary data are obtained through questionnaires that are distributed to the respondents, namely the dean and head of study program at the UniversitasBinaDarma and UniversitasMuhammadiyahPalembang. The results of this study indicate that the instruments in each variable proved to be valid and reliable. Based on the results of hypothesis testing, it can be seen that simultaneously the variable of role, ethics, and independence of internal auditors have positively and significantly effect in implementing good university governance (GUG). These results provide justification or endorsement of the theoretical truths used as the theoretical references of Stewardship Theory and Attitude and Behavioral Theory. Based on the partial test, role of auditor does not significantly affect the variable of GUG, but ethics and independence variable are found to be significant in influencing GUG. The leadership style is negative and insignificant in moderating the role of internal auditors and GUC and also the independence of internal auditor and GUC. The leadership style is found to be positive and insignificant in moderating the relationship of internal auditors’ ethics and GUC.Keywords        Role, Ethics, Independence, Internal Auditor, Leadership Style, Good University Governance  ABSTRAK Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji dan menganalisis pengaruh peran, etika, dan independensi auditor internal dalam menerapkan good university governance (GUG) dengan gaya kepemimpinan sebagai variabel moderasi.
