Were studied the Odonata’s larvae associated with the root system of Eichhornia crassipes (Mart. Solms) in two localities of the “Chalons”, dam overflow channel locate in Santiago de Cuba, from March 2005 to March 2006. For the Odonata’s larvae in the root system was determining the taxonomic composition and the trophic structure. A Spatial-temporal species group was estimated by the density of individuals and taxa, calculating the total volume by the method of root cone volume. In the study were collected 19 species belonging to four families. The temporal variation was correlated with the rainfall and the number of rainy days, according to Spearman Correlation. On the period of homogeneity of climatic variables the taxa’s and individuals’ density remained stable; however, the oscillations in the both densities were associated with the heterogeneity in the precipitation patterns. The densities of individual were different in both the sampled localities. The relationship between climatic variables, root volume and density of individuals suggests that the number of rainy days and accumulated rainfall influence in the abundance of certain taxa and that the roots of Eichhornia crassipes can be appraised as an important habitat for dragonflies larvae and a great place to find food for them.

AbstractThe relative density of corn-rootworm larvae was estimated in two field plots with 4 different plant spacings and with up to 4 plants clumped per location. In both fields the relationship between plant spacing and the number of corn rootworms per sample was similar with the maximum number of larvae occurring when plants were 46 or 50 cm apart. The number of plants clumped per location affected the numbers of corn rootworm in only one field. The relationship between clumping of plants and number of corn rootworms was curvilinear in this field with the most corn rootworms occurring at 3 plants per location.

Abstract Background: Phosphate is an essential plant macronutrient required to achieve maximum crop yield. Roots are able to uptake soil phosphate from the immediate root area, thus creating a nutrient depletion zone. Many plants are able to exploit phosphate from beyond this root nutrient depletion zone through symbiotic association with Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF). Here we characterise the relationship between root architecture, AMF association and low phosphate tolerance in strawberries. The contrasting root architecture in the parental strawberry cultivars ‘Redgauntlet’ and ‘Hapil’ was studied through a mapping population of 168 progeny. Low phosphate tolerance and AMF association was quantified for each genotype to allow assessment of the phenotypic and genotypic relationships between traits. Results: A “phosphate scavenging” root phenotype where individuals exhibit a high proportion of surface lateral roots was associated with a reduction in root system size across genotypes. A genetic correlation between “root system size” traits was observed with a network of pleiotropic QTL were found to represent five “root system size” traits. By contrast, average root diameter and the distribution of roots appeared to be under two discrete methods of genetic control. A total of 18 QTL were associated with plant traits, 4 of which were associated with solidity that explained 46 % of the observed variation. Investigations into the relationship between AMF association and root architecture found that a higher root density was associated with greater AMF colonisation across genotypes. However, no phenotypic correlation or genotypic association was found between low phosphate tolerance and the propensity for AMF association, nor root architectural traits when plants are grown under optimal nutrient conditions. Conclusions: Understanding the genetic relationships underpinning phosphate capture can inform the breeding of strawberry varieties with better nutrient use efficiency. Solid root systems were associated with greater AMF colonisation. However, low P-tolerance was not phenotypically or genotypically associated with root architecture traits in strawberry plants. Furthermore, a trade-off was observed between root system size and root architecture type, highlighting the energetic costs associated with a “phosphate scavenging” root architecture.

Abstract Heavy rains on February 24, 2020, caused flooding in most parts of Jakarta and its surroundings. The one-day observation of accumulated rainfall from the Laser Precipitation Monitor (LPM) was recorded at 358.6 mm/day at the Kemayoran station on February 25, 2020, at 00.00 UTC (07.00 Jakarta Time). In this study, analysis of the microphysical characteristics of extreme rainfall using LPM installed at Kemayoran meteorology station and weather radar at Cengkareng meteorology station with a spatial radius of 250 km. LPM is used to measure the diameter of the raindrops, the velocity of falling raindrops, LPM reflectivity, and the amount of accumulated rainfall with time resolution per minute and stored in excel data format. While the weather radar is used to measure the reflectivity spatially and temporally in the data volume format (.vol). The method used is, first, to find the relationship between LPM reflectivity and the amount of LPM rainfall with regression analysis. Second, the radar reflectivity is converted into estimated rainfall intensity for the Jakarta area and its surroundings. The results of this study found a relationship between LPM reflectivity (X) and rainfall accumulation LPM (Y) to form a regression relationship with the formula Y = 0.013X with R2 = 0.3777. Based on the record of the LPM time series, the peak of rainfall occurred at 18.17 UTC with 1000 raindrops, the maximum fall speed was 10 m/s, and the maximum diameter is 8.5 millimeters. Based on the results of microphysical measurements of LPM, spatial plots, and vertical cross-section radar, it can be concluded that flooding in Jakarta is due to heavy rain from convective clouds.

This paper presents new analyses of data from two multicentre studies carried out by the WHO. The morbid risk of developing schizophrenia, as broadly defined by the Determinants of Outcome Study, was positively related to the mean daily range of temperature. The outcome of schizophrenia, as determined by the International Pilot Study of Schizophrenia, was found to be positively related to mean environmental temperature. Further studies are needed to examine the relationship of geographical and climatic variables to schizophrenia in order to complement what is already known about the role of sociocultural factors.

The relationship between geographic variation in extrafloral nectary size and climatic variation was assessed in three taxa within Adriana (Euphorbiaceae). In each taxon, there was a significant association between gland size and moisture-related climatic variables. A glasshouse experiment was conducted to examine the effect of water stress on nectary longevity, and it was found that the secretory activity of nectaries declined more rapidly on drought-stressed plants than on watered plants.

Recent studies have shown that the photochemical reflectance index (PRI), derived from narrow waveband reflectance at 531 and 570 nm, can be used as a remote measure of photosynthetic light-use efficiency (LUE). However, uncertainty remains as to the consistency of the relationship between PRI and LUE across species. In this study we examined the relationship between the PRI and various photosynthetic parameters for a group of species with varying photosynthetic capacity. At constant irradiance, for the species group as a whole, the PRI was well correlated with LUE (r2=0.58) and with several other photosynthetic parameters, but best correlated with the ratio of carotenoids to chlorophylls contents (Caro / Chl). Despite the interspecific trends observed, determination of light response functions for the PRI in relation to photosynthetic parameters revealed that species-specific relationships were clearly stronger. For example, r2>0.90 for species-level PRI / LUE relationships. Also, the species-specific light-response data show that the magnitude of the PRI can be related to the magnitude of the saturated irradiance and the rate of CO2 uptake. As demonstrated here, a light response function provides a simple yet precise approach for characterising the relationship between the PRI and photosynthetic parameters, which should assist with improved evaluation of the usefulness of the PRI as a generalised measure of LUE.

AbstractIndividuals of Perilissus nudus sp.nov. of the Perilissus anatinus species group are described. This species, which occurs in the mountain ranges of southern Mexico and Costa Rica, is compared with the closely related species P. anatinus Barron. Locality data on additional specimens of P. anatinus, found in mountain ranges in Mexico, are included. Study of characteristics of P. nudus in relation to P. anatinus clarifies further the relationship of this species group with the other species groups of Perilissus.
