"In the present study I intend to present the church music compositions of Jenő Ádám. I will analyze the choral works of the composer that were based on the melodies of Protestant church hymns. The composer was also active as a conductor, but his name is primarily known in the field of music pedagogy. He played an important role in the elaboration and implementation of the Kodály method. In his works pertaining to church music, he adapted the melodies of the most representative church hymns of different ages. He uses both homophonic and polyphonic approaches with his works that have strophic structure or are through-composed. Church music is an essential part of Christian worship. The primary source to create Church music is commonly from the Bible, Christian tradition, and believers' experience. Yet, in the church music of the Protestant Church in the Moluccas (GPM), there is harmony between some elements such as ethnicity, theology, and music. In ethnicity, there is some local cultural tradition derived from the old local religion, which Christianity contextualizes. Using a descriptive qualitative research method, the harmony of all elements, ethnicity, theology, and music result in a new perspective, namely ethno-theo-musicology, to analyze and understand the church music existence. This research found that the Protestant Church member in the Moluccas appreciates all church music substances, which led them not only to praise God but also to experience God in their cultural experience in Maluku. Abstrak Musik gereja merupakan salah satu unsur penting dalam peribadahan Kristen. Musik gereja umumnya diciptakan bersumber dari kesaksian Alkitab, tradisi atau ajaran gereja tertentu, dan pengalaman iman orang percaya. Namun, dalam nyanyian Gereja Protestan Maluku (GPM), musik gereja bersumber dari harmonisasi unsur budaya lokal, teologi, dan musik. Dalam unsur budaya lokal juga ditemukan proses kontekstualisasi narasi-narasi mistik dari kepercayaan asli masyarakat sebelum menjadi Kristen. Dengan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, artikel ini menjelaskan adanya perpaduan unsur etnisitas, teologis, dan musik yang kemudian menghasilkan suatu pendekatan etnoteomusikologis dalam mengartikan suatu nyanyian gereja. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa Warga Gereja Protestan Maluku sebagai pemilik dari Nyanyian GPM, sangat mengapresiasi pendekatan etnotheomusikologis sebab dirasakan bahwa musik gereja selain memuliakan Allah juga mengantarkan mereka mengalami kehadiran Allah di dalam pengalaman-pengalaman budaya yang mereka miliki

Tobie Matthew (c.1544–1628) lived through the most turbulent times of the English Church. AbstractIn the current debate of possible ways to reform the structure and organisation of the protestant church in Germany (Landeskirchen, Konfessionsbünde, EDK) the general question has come up, whether concepts of the Lutheran church, which are founded on ecclesiology or protestant ecclesiastical law, in principle prohibit institutional changes or not. Regarding this problem, the essay discusses the institution of the Protestant church in aspects of theology and ecclesiasticallaw. The CA assumes that religious belief constitutes the church and gives structure to it as a means for spiritual communication between the faithful. Starting from this point the essay argues that the church is essentially non-institutional. Nevertheless it is a part of the dialectics of the concept of the institutionally organised church that even this non-institutionality gains itself an institutional structure. Because of this the essay pleads for a pragmatic view on church institutions: there are reasons to change or to cling to these structures, but these reasons are only pragmatic ones, when the concept of the church, which is derived from theology and protestant ecclesiasticallaw, is considered as given.

All the differences among the church, the religious differences and those that were largely cultural or political, came together to cause the schism. It evoke when people or things are separate or become separate from other people or other thing. Opinions concerning the nature and consequences of schism vary with the different conceptions of the nature of the church. In the 20th century the ecumenical movement tried to worked for reunion among churches. The big result of the cooperation between Roman Catholics and Protestants after the second Vatican Council (1962–1965) has resulted in more flexible attitudes within the churches concerning the problems of schism. Then, in the Protestant church, schism is a rejectable legacy.

This chapter introduces the book as a whole, tracing the history of protestant iconoclasm and ruin creation across the long reformation, from the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s to the disestablishment of the English protestant church in the 1650s. It focuses attention on the poet George Herbert, whose poems, in The Temple (1633), on aspects of church interiors bear witness to the sanctioned iconoclasm of successive Tudor governments—iconoclasm that had broken altars, upended statues, and whitewashed church walls. Herbert was a protestant minister whose poetry celebrates the church established under Elizabeth I, defining its reformed appearance as a middle ground—‘Neither too mean, nor yet too gay’—between Genevan Calvinism and Roman catholicism. But Herbert’s poetry also reveals anxieties about the future of English protestantism—besieged not only by catholic plots but also by puritan and presbyterian clamours for further church reform. Herbert’s anxieties over this twofold threat to the English church are at once anti-catholic and anti-iconoclastic. Although Herbert celebrates the protestant reforms that had dissolved monasteries and destroyed catholic shrines, his poetry also attacks puritans, whose dissatisfaction with the half-hearted reforms of the Elizabethan settlement sought in Herbert’s eyes to ruin the church from within. Herbert’s paranoid poetry provides a keynote for this study’s exploration of the ruined churches and monasteries represented in early modern English literature—ruins, the study argues, that betray similar anxieties about the consequences of catholic plots and puritan iconoclasm for the fate of the English church in its formative century.

New texts and styles predominated in the period following Bach’s settings of the passion. In Protestant church music, more poetic and operatic settings became common, with more emotional stress. Roman Catholic passion music centered on the genre of the sepolcro, with meditations on the reactions of Jesus’ disciples to his suffering and death. The Romantic period produced only a few great works centered on the passion.

Most Anglican crises, including recent ones, seem to boil down in the end to two linked questions — those of identity and authority. Is the Church of England pre-eminently a national or a catholic Church, a Protestant Church (and if so, of what kind?) or Anglican and sui generis? With which of these types of Church should it align itself? Where lies the famed via media, and which are the extremes to be avoided? And who has the authority to decide: as a national Church, parliament, the government, the monarch personally; as an episcopal Church, the bishops? Or should the clergy in convocations (or, latterly, the General Synod, including representatives of the pious laity) take decisions? Anglican crises have always raised these twin problems of identity and authority. In the mid-eighteenth century — from the end of the 1730s and particularly in the 1740s — the Church of England faced another crisis. The Anglican bishops had to come to terms with the movement known as the ‘evangelical revival’. Principles had to be applied to a new situation. The bishops had to decide how to categorise the new societies (or would they become new churches?) which were springing up all over England.
