Brazilian semiarid region is marked by the constant incidence of droughts periods, which are climatic events responsible for great disorders for agricultural production, an activity traditionally based on subsistence agriculture. The study aimed at analyzing the evolution of bean production in the municipality of Itaporanga, Paraíba State, Brazil, between 2005-2015, associating these results with local rainfall. It was performed the Principal Component Analysis. Six years of the 11-year series presented a value of annual precipitation lower than the historical mean of the municipality (838 mm). The crop area with beans in the municipality ranged from 5,560 hectares in 2006 to 150 hectares in 2013. There were large variations in the amount of bean production, with values ranging from 2 to 1,985 tons. The PCA recorded a value of 92.4% of explanation in the first two axes and demonstrated a strong correlation between the analyzed variables with the precipitation. Confirming that proper pluviometric indexes are determining factors on bean production in Itaporanga, Paraíba State, Brazil.

Agricultural production in semi-arid areas of the globe is dependent on species adapted to conditions of low availability of resources, such as water. Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp.) is a vegetable widely grown in regions with water restrictions, however, even with its good adaptability, it is vulnerable to the effects of prolonged droughts. In this sense, this research aimed to analyze the influence of rainfall patterns on the production dynamics of cowpea during the period of fifteen years (2002-2016) in the municipality of Conceição, Paraíba, Brazil. A correlation matrix was used to analyze the influence of precipitation on the production variables of the cowpea crop, as well as the relationship between these variables. Subsequently, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was carried out. The results showed a strong reduction in the production variables of cowpea from the year 2012, which is due to the reduction of rainfall in this period and was proven through the correction matrix, which showed a positive correlation of rainfall mainly with the planted and harvested area. The PCA recorded 91.02% of explanation in the first two axes, and demonstrated that for production and productivity, other factors in addition to good rainfall levels are necessary to increase the productive results of cowpea in the municipality.

Abstract Reservoirs are used in the Brazilian semiarid for human supply, power generation, irrigated agriculture and more recently, intensive fish farming, the Sobradinho reservoir being the largest of this region. In the last decade, the semiarid region has suffered a strong drought, in opposite direction to the increasing demand of multiple water uses. The present work aims to study the spatial-temporal variation of water quality in two reservoirs in the Brazilian semiarid region (Sobradinho and Itaparica reservoirs). For this, samples were collected in the dry and wet periods between 2011 and 2014, and the results were analyzed through boxplot charts and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). For both reservoirs, our results showed that the PCAs did not evidence a specific seasonal change in the water quality characteristics, distinguishing the wet and dry periods through the four years studied. A clear temporal pattern was detected in both reservoirs, with higher values of turbidity, dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus in the wet period and higher values of pH and alkalinity in the dry period. An upstream reduction of nutrients and turbidity was not found in this study, as is reported in literature for consecutive reservoirs, probably due to the irrigation and aquaculture activities, mainly in Itaparica reservoir.

Usually, in the Brazilian semiarid region where dry and humid periods are well determined, phenological events are mainly affected by seasonal rainfall and availability of water in the soil. The studies in these regions have importance especially to understand the dynamics of dry forests. Thus, the objective of this work was to characterize the phenophases of trees P. pyramidalis, C. blachetianus, A. pyrifolium and J. mollissima, and their relationship with the temporal distribution of rainfall, which occurs in the form of pulses. Furthermore, the effect of goat grazing was evaluated. The experimental areas presented different caprine stockings, where first had ten and the second five. The third stocking remained without goats during the experimental period. For the phenological follow-up, 50 tree individuals of each species were selected, tagged and monitored weekly, at Experimental Station, in the municipality of São João do Cariri-PB. In order to quantify the phenological events, the percentage of Fournier intensity was used, registering the presence and absence of the phenophases: sprouting, flowering, fruiting and senescence, whose data were related to the water pulses and inter-pulses. The phenological events presented annual patterns, with interannual variations in intensity. We observed that the phenophases occur in synchrony with the temporal distribution of the rainfall pulses in the area of its occurrence. As the dry season progresses, reduction in sprouting, flowering and fruiting occurs when the inter-pulses of rainfall was intensified. The presence of goats did not influence the phenological development of the species.

Different soil managements evidence soil properties, contributing positively or negatively to its quality. A study was conducted in the city of Martins, Rio Grande do Norte (RN) state, in four cultivated areas: corn intercropped with beans (CICB), cassava monocrop (CAMO), bean monocrop (BEMO) and native forest (NF, considered as the original soil condition). This study aimed to evaluate changes in the chemical properties of an Oxisol in function of different agricultural uses (N, P, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na1+, Al3+, pH, EC, H+Al, BS, V, CEC, t, m, OM and ESP) and the distinction of environments using multivariate analysis. The sampling was performed up to 30 cm deep. Soil pH values were kept close to 5.5, except for the area with corn intercropped with beans, whose values were higher than 7.0. Corn intercropped with beans had the highest concentrations of K+, Na+ and Ca2+ on the soil, with a direct impact on base sum. Different uses modified soil chemical properties. Corn intercropped with beans differs from the other treatments due to the addition of solid waste to the soil. Principal component analyses showed pH and exchangeable bases are the most sensitive indicators of environment separation.

Abstract Aim: The objective of this study was to investigate the spatial and temporal variation of microcrustacean assemblages of a reservoir in the Brazilian semiarid region. Methods Physical and chemical water variables and samples of microcrustaceans were collected at eight sites of the reservoir between July 2013 and November 2014, in a total of seven campaigns. For this study, the reservoir was categorized in two compartments: lateral and central. Results Limnological variables showed significant temporal variation (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F = 19.51, p = 0.001). Higher turbidity values and suspended solids were observed in the rainiest months, while during the dry months, we measured higher values of transparency, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll-a. It was not found significant spatial variation of limnological variables (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F = 0.96; p = 0.394). During the study period, ten species were recorded: four Cladocera (Ceriodaphnia cornuta, Daphnia gessneri, Diaphanosoma birgei and Diaphanosoma spinulosum ) three Copepoda Calanoida (Argyrodiaptomus azevedoi, Notodiaptomus cearensis and Notodiaptomus iheringi) and three Copepoda Cyclopoida (Macrocyclops albidus, Thermocyclops minutus and Thermocyclops decipiens). The microcrustacean assemblages showed significant temporal variation (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F = 4.34; p = 0.001) as well as significant spatial variation (PERMANOVA, Pseudo-F = 9.46; p = 0.001). The highest values of abundance and richness were observed in the lateral compartment, this result is mainly related to the presence of aquatic macrophytes in this region, because the analysis of partial RDA indicated that limnological variables explained only 11% of this variation (Pseudo-F = 2.08, p = 0.001). Conclusions The results suggest that the seasonality of the semiarid is an important factor in the temporal dynamics of the limnological variables, while the aquatic macrophytes play an important role in the spatial distribution of the microcrustacean assembly.
