Influence of Age, Sex, Etiology, and Hearing Loss on Balance Performance by Deaf Children

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of age, sex, etiology, and degree of hearing loss on the static and dynamic balance performance of hearing impaired children and youth ( N = 132), ages 3 to 14 yr. The subjects were individually assessed on Items 2 and 7 of Subtest 2 of the Short Form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency. As expected, performance on both tasks improved with chronological age. In comparing the performance of subjects by etiology, only one significant difference emerged; those with genetic deafness were superior on static balance to those whose deafness was idiopathic. However, the mean scores for the genetic group were superior for both balance tasks. The sex of the child as well as extent of hearing loss did not affect performance in either task.

BACKGROUND: Although brucellosis can lead to multisystem complications, involvement of the ear in brucellosis is rarely reported in the literature. The purpose of this study was to assess the hearing status of patients with brucellosis. STUDY DESIGN: Thirty-two patients with brucellosis were included in the study. Pure tone and speech audiometry and tympanometry were performed in the patients. RESULTS: The mean pure tone averages of the patients were within normal limits and were similar in both ears ( P > 0.05). The pure tone averages of the patients with or without anti- Brucella treatment were not significantly different ( P > 0.05) and were within the normal limits. When the hearing levels of these patients were compared at the frequencies of 250, 500, 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 Hz, there was no significant difference as well ( P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Peripheral brucellosis does not appear to be associated with hearing loss.

The present study's purpose was to probe into the reliability and validity measurement of dynamic balance for individuals with IQs below 29. The 91 subjects were asked to complete the Papcsy-DePaepe test and the Bruininks test according to each test's protocol. Correlations of odd-even scores produced a reliability of .98 for the Papcsy-DePaepe test. Concurrent validity was indicated by a Pearson product-moment correlation of .64 between the two tests. Subsequent 3 × 2 × 2 multivariate analyses of variance confirmed a significant difference between the two tests and that retardation was associated with balance performance although age and gender were not.

AbstractTwelve per cent of a series of 284 patients with vestibular schwannoma presented with sudden deafness. If sudden sensorineural hearing loss is present then it is very likely to be the main presenting symptom. The mean length of patients' history is eight months shorter in this group than in the non-sudden deafness group. Sixteen per cent of vestibular schwannoma patients without sudden deafness present with a 'dead' ear whereas 29.5 per cent of those presenting with sudden deafness have total hearing loss. There was no significant difference between the sudden deafness group and the 'all others' group with regard to tumour size, udiogram shape, caloric test, imbalance, and facial numbness. Although the numbers of patients with sudden deafness in this series were too small to reach significance, on the basis of the clinical correlation of vestibular schwannoma morphology it is possible to postulate that compression of the vasculature within the bony internal auditory canal by a laterally arising tumour may be the aetiological factor and may be more likely to occur than in more medially arising tumours.

Objective Evaluate the clinical use of the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale as predictive of early weaning and verify if women who had higher self-efficacy scores breastfed for longer periods. Methods Cohort study developed with 100 postpartum mothers. Research instrument used: Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form. The feeding was monitored on the 7th, 15th, 30th, 45th and 60th day, by phone. Results The mean duration of exclusive breastfeeding was 53.2 days (SD 14.2). Most mothers (82.3%) had scores compatible with high self-efficacy for breastfeeding, none had low efficacy. There was no statistically significant difference in the comparison of mean duration of exclusive and non-exclusive breastfeeding, with the scores of medium and high efficacy. Conclusion Findings did not enable the confirmation of the use of the scale as a predictor of risk of early weaning. No relation was observed between higher scores of high efficacy and longer periods of exclusive breastfeeding.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the coinciding anticipation timing (CAT), reaction time and dynamic balance performances of American football players according to their playing positions. Material: Thirty-five American football players, who train at least 3 days a week, and compete in Universities Protected Football 1st League, participated in this study, voluntarily. The players were divided into two playing positions: offensive (17 players, mean age: 20.76 ± 1.30 years) and defensive (18 players, mean age: 21.94 ± 2.87 years). The CAT at different stimulus speeds (6 mph, 12 mph), reaction time (visual, auditory, mixed), and dynamic balance performance (anterior-posterior, medial-lateral, perimeter lenght) were measured in the laboratory environment. The CAT, reaction time, and dynamic balance performance of players were determined by Bassin Anticipation Timer, Newtest 1000, and Technobody Prokin-200, respectively. Results: The data obtained were analyzed in SPSS (20.0) program. Firstly, the raw data for CAT performance (6mph, 12 mph) were converted to absolute error score. According to Shapiro-Wilk test result, the all data showed normal distribution. Independent Sample t test was used to determine the differences between the two playing positions. In addition, the effect size between the two playing positions was calculated in parameters with showing significant differences, and Cohen’s d (1988) values were taken into account. Compared with the defensive players (20.15±3.81 ms), the absolute error scores at fast stimulus speeds (12 mph) of offensive players (17.45±3.48 ms) was found to be significantly lower (t(33) =-2.181, p=.036). The visual reaction time of offensive players (318.11± 17.47 ms) was significantly shorter than defensive players (340.58± 32.60 ms, t(26322) =-2.560, p=.017). In terms of dynamic balance parameters such as perimeter lenght, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral, there was no statistically significant difference between the playing positions (p>0.05). Conclusions: Perceptual-cognitive characteristics such as CAT, and reaction time performance differ according to the playing positions, and this difference may be related to the physical, and cognitive demands required by their playing positions.

The present study investigates the acoustic characteristics of Greek vowels produced by hearing-impaired children with profound prelingual hearing loss and cochlear implants. The results revealed a significant difference between vowels produced by hearingimpaired children and those produced by normal-hearing ones in terms of duration. Stressed vowels were significantly longer than non-stressed for both groups, while F0, F1 and F2 did not differ significantly between the two groups for any vowel, with the exception of /a/, which had significantly higher F1 when produced by hearingimpaired children. Acoustic vowel spaces were similar for the two groups but shifted towards higher frequencies in the low-high dimension and somehow reduced in the front-back dimension for the hearing-impaired group.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is characterised clinically by usage-related pain and/or functional limitation. OA that is associated with physical dysfunction and decline in health-related quality of life caused the main disability worldwide and is expected to increase due to aging and obesity rates and further load on the population and health system. The strengthening exercises that normally used is knee flexion and extensions, isometric quadriceps exercise, isometric hamstring exercise, and sit to stand to improve the balance. Objectives: is to find out the impact of Strengthening exercise on Balance in patients with knee Osteoarthritis Study Design: Quasi experimental study Methods: Fifty-six (n=56) of knee OA patients were involved in this study by judgemental sampling design. Researcher will first demonstrate and explain the Y-balance tools testing procedure based on Plisky and colleagues study. Participants are given to practice six trials before the formal testing, stated that SEBT have a significant learning effect and found that the reaching distances reached the longest distance after six trials and then will be constant. Results: Independent t-test shows significant difference in only anterior direction. In the experimental group the mean value is 69.83 with a SD of 11.62 while in the control group the mean value is 63.51 with a SD of 11.36; p-value of .045 and t-value of 2.056. In postero-lateral directions result shows there is no significant difference, experimental group the mean value is 91.10 with a SD of 9.74 while in control group mean value is 90.88 with SD value of 12.68; p-value of .947 and t-value of .067. Result of postero-medial shows no significant difference too, in experimental group the mean value of 95.16 with SD of 10.92 while in control group the mean value is 93.40 with SD of 8.20; p=value of .501 and t-value of .678. Conclusion: This study has proven strengthening exercise using YBT improved only anterior direction of YBT but no significant difference in postero-lateral and postero-medial direction. This study examined whether the Test of Auditory Comprehension of Language (TACL) (Carrow, 1973) scores were significantly affected by mode of presentation. The TACL was presented to 32 children with moderate sensorineural hearing losses. Two groups of 16 children were matched for age, sex, and hearing loss and were given either an auditory-only or auditory-visual presentation of the TACL. No significant difference was found between mean TACL scores by presentation. Mode of presentation had no effect on the TACL scores for those children examined.

Background: Biomechanical factors, such as spinal deformities can result in balance control disorders. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of bracing on static and dynamic balance control of hyperkyphotic female adolescents. Study Design: Clinical trial. Methods: A force platform was employed to record center of pressure (COP) parameters. Ten adolescents undergoing Milwaukee brace for hyperkyphosis and 14 normal subjects participated in the study. The COP data were collected with and without brace immediately on first day and after 120 days of continuous brace wear. Results: No significant difference was found in dynamic and static balance tests with and without brace on the first day ( P > 0.05). After 120 days, the values of COP displacement in functional reach to the right and left for the hyperkyphotic adolescents when performing without brace enhanced significantly compared to the first day. The forward reach distance was not significantly different between the normal and hyperkyphotic subjects ( P = 0.361); however, hyperkyphotic participants had significantly smaller reach distance in the functional reach to the right (21.88 vs. 25.56cm) and left (17.04 vs. 21.25cm). Conclusion: It might be concluded that bracing had a possible effect on improvement of dynamic balance performance, because the subjects could reach the target in dynamic reach tests with higher displacement in sagittal plane without losing their balance control. Clinical relevance Little is known about the biomechanical aspects of brace wear in individuals with hyperkyphosis. This study investigated balance differences between the healthy and hyperkyphotic individuals, and outcomes of Milwaukee brace wear. It might provide some new insight into the conservative treatment of hyperkyphosis for clinicians and researchers.

Category: Trauma Introduction/Purpose: Fibular fractures are one of the most common traumatic injuries treated by orthopaedic surgeons. These fractures range from stable to unstable, and accordingly may be treated conservatively with immobilization or operatively with open reduction and internal fixation. Unstable Weber classification type B fibula fractures are at the level of the syndesmosis. When stressed, they show an increased medial clear space widening. Recent studies have suggested these fractures may be treated non-operatively. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to determine whether operative and non-operative management of Weber B fractures exhibit any difference in functional outcomes. Methods: For this study, the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRIMSA) guidelines were followed. A systematic review of the literature was performed on the Medline (PubMed), Ovid, and Embase databases in May 2017. Only studies analyzing surgical and non-surgical management of Weber B fibular fractures were included. A meta-analysis was performed to pool difference of the mean for functional outcome scores (Olerud Molander Ankle [OMA] score, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Score [AOFAS], Visual Analogue Scale [VAS], and Short-form 36 [SF36] questionnaire) of the ankles of patients who underwent surgical and non-surgical management. Descriptive, quantitative, and qualitative data were extracted and analyzed using Comprehensive meta-analysis software and SPSS 21. Random effect model used to pool the difference of the mean of the outcomes and I2 to assess the heterogeneity. Results: Of the 823 articles identified, four studies met inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. A total of 383 unstable Weber type B fibular fractures were identified, with 198 treated operatively and 161 treated non-operatively. There were 158 (41.2%) male and 225 (58.8%) female patients, who averaged 45.6 years of age (Table). Mean follow up was 27.3 months. The pooled mean difference (SMD) for OMA functional score did not show any statistically significant difference between surgical and non-surgical management (SMD = 12.364 [95% CI: -4.684, 29.413]; I2 = 91.93%), although each single paper highlighted the superiority of non-surgical management. Other functional scores could not be pooled because they were not consistently reported within the included studies. Conclusion: The early literature suggests that there is no difference in the clinical outcomes of unstable Weber B fractures, whether they are treated operatively or non-operatively. Longer-term studies are warranted to examine the clinical outcomes of patients managed non-operatively.
