On account of its high brightness, the field emission electron source has the advantage that it provides the conventional electron microscope with highly coherent illuminating system and that it directly improves the, resolving power of the scanning electron microscope. The present authors have reported some results obtained with a 100 kV field emission electron microscope. It has been proven, furthermore, that the tungsten emitter as a temperature field emission source can be utilized with a sufficient stability under a modest vacuum of 10-8 ~ 10-9 Torr. The present paper is concerned with an extension of our study on the characteristics of the temperature field emitters.

The article contains the comparative results of the experimental and calculated research of the strength of a pipeline with such defects as “metal loss” and “dent with groove”. Two coils with diameter of 820 mm and the thickness of 9 mm of 19G steel were used for full-scale pipe sample production. One of the coils was intentionally damaged by machining, which resulted in “metal loss” defect, the other one was dented (by press machine) and got groove mark (by chisel). The testing of pipe samples was performed by applying static internal pressure to the moment of collapse. The calculation of deterioration pressure was carried out with the use of national and foreign methodical approaches. The calculated values of collapsing pressure for the pipe with loss of metal mainly coincided with the calculation experiment results based on Russian method and ASME B31G. In case of pipe with dent and groove the calculated value of collapsing pressure demonstrated greater coincidence with Russian method and to a lesser extent with API 579/ASME FFS-1. In whole, all calculation methods demonstrate sufficient stability of results, which provides reliable operation of pipelines with defects.

Abstract Background Modified tension band fixation has become commonly used for transverse patella fractures. The conventional stainless steel wire provides sufficient stability but may be associated with complications. Objective The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a new modified tension band fixation technique for transverse patella fractures using a nonabsorbable suture. Material and methods We present the result of a prospective series using a nonabsorbable suture (FiberWire) for transverse patella fractures. The mean follow-up period totaled 12 months. A total of 16 patients were evaluated by radiographic and clinical review. The postoperative clinical evaluation employed Lysholm and Böstman scores. Result All clinical results on follow-up were good to excellent. Minimal intra-articular joint stepping and further fracture displacement were recorded. No patient needed re-operation, and functional outcomes of the knee were satisfactory. No significant differences were found between the injured and contralateral knee range of motion. No symptomatic implants and skin complications were noted, and all fractures were completed heal within 15 weeks. Conclusion FiberWire provided sufficient stability and reduced postoperative complications. The results proved appropriate, and the technique has merit, as it obviates the need for re-operation.

This paper investigates the run of environmental protection industry input-output model. A new mathematic method is applied to study this kind of singular input-output system. With this new method, we need not convert singular systems into general linear systems. A sufficient stability condition under which an environmental protection industry input-output model is stable is proved. This condition is in the form of linear matrix inequality and can be easily tested by computers.

New cationic carriers must be molecularly designed to enable selective RNAi and siRNA transport and administration. Because at some time, the carriers will have to be removed from the cells and perfused out of the body, sophisticated, temporarily controllable biodegradable carriers are necessary. This indicates that the degradation process must be well regulated and possibly in several steps to destroy the carrier in a controlled manner. Moreover, multifunctional cationic carriers must be molecularly designed to carry and steer two independent kinds of siRNAs delivered at two very different rates. This allows sequential treatment of some diseases. Nanosized carriers must be enhanced to provide sufficient stability for the therapeutic duration of the system. In addition, there is the recurring issue of cationic carrier toxicity to be addressed in the near future. Despite the courageous and robust field efforts, a lot of difficulties still need to be resolved.
