An Assessment of the Construct Distinctiveness of Stress Arousal and Burnout

This study examined the construct and discriminant validity of stress arousal and burnout as measured on the Stress Arousal Scale and the multidimensional role-specific version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, respectively. The analyses utilized data from 148 individuals randomly selected from a database of 563 respondents to a larger study. The sample responded to a survey sent to members of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Sample size used in this study fell within Loehlin's 1992 prescription that for confirmatory factor analysis with two to four factors, a minimum of 100 to 200 cases should be collected. Forty-six respondents indicated that they were partners, principals, or sole practitioners in accounting firms, and 103 indicated that they were staff members (juniors, seniors, or managers). Latent variables were first constructed for the stress arousal and burnout factors. Confirmatory factor analysis was then conducted on the scale data to assess whether the factors would load on their respective underlying theoretical constructs. Finally, a nested model constraining stress arousal and burnout to load on one underlying construct was tested against the hypothesized two-factor model. The results indicated good model fit for the two-factor model and a significant loss of fit for the one-factor model, thus providing strong support for the conceptualization of stress arousal and burnout as distinct constructs.

Background and PurposeBurnout syndrome is common in critical care nursing. The Critical Care Societies Collaborative recently released a joint statement and call to action on burnout in critical care professionals.MethodsWe conducted an exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of the 22-item MBI.ResultsThe exploratory factor analysis identified three factors but after questions were removed; we were left with a 2-factor, 10-item abridged version of the MBI-HSS to test with CFA modeling. The CFA indicated conflicting fit indices.Conclusionswe conducted an exploratory and CFA of the abridged MBI-HSS in critical care nurses from the United States and found the two-factor model was the best fit achieved.

This study examined various psychometric properties of the items comprising the shame and guilt scales of the Test of Self-Conscious Affect–Adolescent. A total of 563 adolescents (321 females and 242 males) completed these scales, and also measures of depression and empathy. Confirmatory factor analysis provided support for an oblique two-factor model, with the originally proposed shame and guilt items comprising shame and guilt factors, respectively. Also, shame correlated with depression positively and had no relation with empathy. Guilt correlated with depression negatively and with empathy positively. Thus, there was support for the convergent and discriminant validity of the shame and guilt factors. Multiple-group confirmatory factor analysis comparing females and males, based on the chi-square difference test, supported full metric invariance, the intercept invariance of 26 of the 30 shame and guilt items, and higher latent mean scores among females for both shame and guilt. Comparisons based on the difference in root mean squared error of approximation values supported full measurement invariance and no gender difference for latent mean scores. The psychometric and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

The paper reports an investigation of whether sums of squared factor loadings obtained in confirmatory factor analysis correspond to eigenvalues of exploratory factor analysis. The sum of squared factor loadings reflects the variance of the corresponding latent variable if the variance parameter of the confirmatory factor model is set equal to one. Hence, the computation of the sum implies a specific type of scaling of the variance. While the investigation of the theoretical foundations suggested the expected correspondence between sums of squared factor loadings and eigenvalues, the necessity of procedural specifications in the application, as for example the estimation method, revealed external influences on the outcome. A simulation study was conducted that demonstrated the possibility of exact correspondence if the same estimation method was applied. However, in the majority of realized specifications the estimates showed similar sizes but no correspondence.

Abstract Background: Anxiety is an evolutionary mental status that alerts a person from possible dangers: inside or outside dangers. One of the external dangers that threaten global society these days is Corona's disease. It has reported since 2020 January in Iran and has killed more than 8000 people during 5 month. But someone are unaware of the importance and danger of Corona or they don't consider any reason to worry. The aim of this study was to design and standardize a special questionnaire for corona anxiety in the Iranian population. Because of it, with the help of 10 psychologists and psychiatrics found 8 scales and wrote 36 question. Questionnaire asked from 523 internet operators by porsline.ir all over Iran. Method: To assess the reliability, kappa statistic was calculated and for construct validity, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with Varimax rotation and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were used. Convergent and discriminant validity was checked using Spearman correlation and for content validity index (CVR) was used. Result: Reliability for the most items was high. Questionnaire showed excellent convergent and discriminant validity except for social support subscale. The results of categorical confirmatory factor analysis supported the fit of the eight-factor model of the Corona Anxiety Scales-36. Furthermore, the average of CVR was higher than acceptance level (0.62). Conclusion: The findings showed that the corona anxiety questionnaire is a questionnaire with appropriate validity and reliability for use in anxiety related to the unknown corona disease.

In 1995 Chan and Hui examined the responses of a sample of Chinese teachers on the Maslach Burnout Inventory and recommended a possible 2-factor rather than the original 3-factor model for the assessment of burnout among Chinese teachers. In the present study, the factor structure of responses to the Chinese version of the Maslach Burnout Inventory in a sample of 1,398 Chinese secondary school guidance teachers was examined using the EQS approach to confirmatory factor analysis. The results showed that a 3-factor model (Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment) provided the best fit, with the first two factors highly correlated ( r = .80). Internal consistencies for the subscales ranged from .80 to .88.

BackgroundThe Fear Questionnaire is an internationally popular measure in anxiety disorder research, but its validity with social phobia patients has not been clearly demonstrated.MethodA confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using the Fear Questionnaire responses of 122 social phobia patients.ResultsThe results indicated that the proposed three-factor model of the scale (agoraphobia, social phobia, and Wood/injury dimensions) provided a good fit to the data.ConclusionsThese data provide strong support for the validity of the scale and for the multidimensional view of fears proposed by Arrindell.

Probability-based and measurement-related hypotheses for confirmatory factor analysis of repeated-measures data are investigated. Such hypotheses comprise precise assumptions concerning the relationships among the true components associated with the levels of the design or the items of the measure. Measurement-related hypotheses concentrate on the assumed processes, as, for example, transformation and memory processes, and represent treatment-dependent differences in processing. In contrast, probability-based hypotheses provide the opportunity to consider probabilities as outcome predictions that summarize the effects of various influences. The prediction of performance guided by inexact cues serves as an example. In the empirical part of this paper probability-based and measurement-related hypotheses are applied to working-memory data. Latent variables according to both hypotheses contribute to a good model fit. The best model fit is achieved for the model including latent variables that represented serial cognitive processing and performance according to inexact cues in combination with a latent variable for subsidiary processes.

Abstract Background: Effective monitoring of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) competence depends on psychometrically robust assessment methods. While the UK Cognitive Therapy Scale – Revised (CTS-R; Blackburn et al., 2001) has become a widely used competence measure in CBT training, practice and research, its underlying factor structure has never been investigated. Aims: This study aimed to present the first investigation into the factor structure of the CTS-R based on a large sample of postgraduate CBT trainee recordings. Method: Trainees (n = 382) provided 746 mid-treatment audio recordings for depression (n = 373) and anxiety (n = 373) cases scored on the CTS-R by expert markers. Tapes were split into two equal samples counterbalanced by diagnosis and with one tape per trainee. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted. The suggested factor structure and a widely used theoretical two-factor model were tested with confirmatory factor analysis. Measurement invariance was assessed by diagnostic group (depression versus anxiety). Results: Exploratory factor analysis suggested a single-factor solution (98.68% explained variance), which was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. All 12 CTS-R items were found to contribute to this single factor. The univariate model demonstrated full metric invariance and partial scalar invariance by diagnosis, with one item (item 10 – Conceptual Integration) demonstrating scalar non-invariance. Conclusions: Findings indicate that the CTS-R is a robust homogenous measure and do not support division into the widely used theoretical generic versus CBT-specific competency subscales. Investigation into the CTS-R factor structure in other populations is warranted.

The study aimed to perform confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency, gender differential item functioning, and discriminant validity of the Fear of COVID-5 Scale in emerging adult students of a university in Mexico. Confirmatory factor analysis, internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha and McDonald's omega), and gender differential item functioning were estimated (Kendall tau b correlation). The Fear of COVID-5 Scale showed a one-dimension structure (RMSEA = 0.07, CFI = 0.98, TLI = 0.96, and SRMR = 0.02), with high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha of 0.78 and McDonald's omega of 0.81), non-gender differential item functioning (Kendall tau b between 0.07 and 0.10), and significant discriminant validity (Higher scores for fear of COVID-19 were observed in high clinical anxiety levels). In conclusion, the Fear of COVID-5 Scale presents a clear one-dimension structure similar to a previous study.

Peer-facilitated support groups are an important source for receiving disease-related information and support for people with systemic sclerosis (or scleroderma). A recent survey explored reasons for attending systemic sclerosis support groups in Europe and Australia and used exploratory factor analysis to group reasons for attendance into three main themes: (1) interpersonal and social support, (2) disease treatment and symptom management strategies, and (3) other aspects of living with systemic sclerosis. The objective of the present study was to replicate this study in a sample of patients from North America using confirmatory factor analysis. A 30-item survey was used to assess reasons for attendance and organizational preferences among systemic sclerosis patients in Canada and the United States. In total, 171 members completed the survey. In the confirmatory factor analysis, the three-factor model showed good fit to the data (χ2(399) = 646.0, p < 0.001, Tucker–Lewis index = 0.97, comparative fit index = 0.97, root mean square error approximation = 0.06). On average, respondents rated 22 (73%) of 30 items as “important” or “very important” reasons for attending support groups. Among organizational preferences, respondents emphasized the importance of the ability to share feelings and concerns, as well as educational aspects. Findings of our study suggest that reasons for attending support groups are similar for patients from Europe, Australia, and North America and that support groups should facilitate social support as well as disease education. These results inform the development of training programs for current and future systemic sclerosis support group leaders across the globe.
