Summary Factorial experiments in block designs with nested rows and columns are described with suggestions about how they should be planned. In such experiments the importance of interaction and hidden replication are emphasized. Such experiments are carried out on heterogeneous experimental material. Thus, it is reasonable to seek a design that can withstand the loss of observations. The robustness of a block design with nested rows and columns against the loss of whole blocks is presented, along with examples of such designs.

Neighbor discovery is a significant research topic in wireless sensor networks. After wireless sensor devices are deployed in specific areas, they attempt to determine neighbors within their communication range. This paper proposes a new Block design-based Asynchronous Neighbor Discovery protocol for sensor networks calledBAND. We borrow the concept of combinatorial block designs for neighbor discovery. First, we summarize a practical challenge and difficulty of using the original block designs. To address this challenge, we create a new block generation technique for neighbor discovery schedules and provide a mathematical proof of the proposed concept. A key aspect of the proposed protocol is that it combines two block designs in order to construct a new block for neighbor discovery. We analyze the worst-case neighbor discovery latency numerically between our protocol and some well-known protocols in the literature. Our protocol reveals that the worst-case latency is much lower than others. Finally, we evaluate the performance ofBANDand existing representative protocols through the simulation study. The results of our simulation study show that the average and maximum latency ofBANDis about 40% lower than that of existing protocols. Furthermore,BANDspends approximately 30% less energy than others during the neighbor discovery process.

A study was conducted in farmer’s field through technology demonstrations during Kharif season of 2018 and 2019 in Subarnapur district of Odisha to recommend the most suited short duration drought tolerant upland rice variety particular to the locality. Six different varieties like Sahabhagi dhan, Mandakini, Jogesh, DRR-44, and DRR-42 & Khandagiri were taken with four replications in Randomized Block Design in both years. Technology demonstration included not only the improved short duration varieties, but also a package of good agronomic practices viz. line sowing, seed treatment with Bavistin, proper fertilization with dose @ 80:40:40 NPK/ha, pre emergence herbicide application with pretilachlor, needful manual weeding and  need based plant protection chemicals. The results of demonstration showed that farmers could increase rice productivity notably by adopting improved variety Sahabhagi dhan and DRR-44. These varieties recorded higher grain yields of 64% and 46%, respectively, and fetched a sum return of Rs 25620 and Rs 25275 over farmers’ local variety Khandagiri.

Beauveria bassiana is one of the entomopathogen fungi which is known as biological control agent of cocoa pod borer and cocoa mirids (Helopeltis spp.). Because of its effectiveness in the fields is still not consistent, so we conduct a research with the objective to know the possibility of Beauveria bassiana to be established as a endophyte. Various fungal entomopathogens have already been reported as endophytes and the various methods used to inoculate the plants with B. bassiana were partially effective. The research has been conducted in laboratory of Plant Protection, Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute by inoculating of cocoa seeds and cocoa nursery with B. bassiana suspension.  The trial was arranged  by randomized complete block design with a factorial arrangement. The factor were spore concentration of B. bassiana (0; 2; and 4 g/ 10 l) and cocoa varieties (family of ICS 60, TSH858, and hybrid). The trial were use  four replications. The results showed that the fungal entomopathogen B. bassiana was established as an endophyte in cocoa seedling, both from cocoa seeds and nursery application. Percentage of existence of B. bassiana colonies as endophytes one month after seeds application were ICS 60 amounted to 93.3 % both on concentration treatments, while the families of TSH 858 by 80 % and 86.67 % respectively in 2 g and 4 g per 10 l of B. bassiana spores concentration treament.. The lowest percentage was in hybrids, which amounted to 66.67% and 50%. B. bassiana colonies was exixtence as an endophyte in culture from root, stem and leaves of cocoa seedling up to 5 months post inoculation. While the application on nursery by soil drenshing, leaf spraying, and stem injection , it was known that B. bassiana colonies were found in the tissues of leaves, stems, and roots until two months after application. Colonies of B. bassiana as endophytes still exsist until six weeks after nursery was planted in the field.

One of the causes of the declining productivity of rice is sheath blight disease caused by the mold Rhizoctonia solani Kuhn. Control of sheath blight disease that is often done by the farmers is by using chemical pesticides (fungicides), which caused environmental problems. One way to reduce the use of pesticides is to biological control by using antagonist bacteria. This study aimed at in vitro test of rhizobacteria in preventing the development of sheath blight disease in rice plants. This research was conducted in the Phytopathology laboratory of Plant Protection Department of Faculty Agriculture, University of Lambung Mangkurat Banjarbaru from March to May 2018. The experiment used a randomized block design with three groups consisting of eight types of rhizobacteria isolates: (r1) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Barito Kuala), (r2) Bacillus megaterium (Hulu Sungai Tengah), (r3) Azotobacter sp. (Barito Kuala), (r4) Pseudomonas sp. (Hulu Sungai Selatan), (r5) Flavobacterium sp. (Tanah Laut), (r6) Bacillus bodius (Barito Kuala), (r7) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Hulu Sungai Selatan), (r8) Necercia sp. (Tanah Laut). The results showed that all rhizobacteria have the ability to inhibit the development of R. solani with different percentages of inhibitions. Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Barito Kuala) was the most effective rhizobacteria in inhibiting the development of R. solani.

The purpose of this note is to point out some connexions between generalized Hadamard matrices (4, 5) and various tactical configurations such as group divisible designs (3), affine resolvable balanced incomplete block designs (1), and orthogonal arrays of strength two (2). Some constructions for these arrays are also indicated.A balanced incomplete block design (BIBD) with parameters v, b, r, k, λ is an arrangement of v symbols called treatments into b subsets called blocks of k < v distinct treatments such that each treatment occurs in r blocks and any pair of treatments occurs in λ blocks.

The present study was designed to determine if the number of points on the perimeter of block designs affects the difficulty level of the designs. A block-design test was constructed, using four designs each in 4 complexity groupings. Variables commonly used to increase the difficulty of block designs—such as number of blocks, color, and use of the diagonal—were controlled throughout the 16 designs. Differences between complexity groups were significant, and there were no significant sex differences. The results indicate that difficulty is a function of point complexity, although use of the diagonal is also an important factor.

The hemodynamic response function (HRF) describes the local response of brain vasculature to functional activation. Accurate HRF modeling enables the investigation of cerebral blood flow regulation and improves our ability to interpret fMRI results. Block designs have been used extensively as fMRI paradigms because detection power is maximized; however, block designs are not optimal for HRF parameter estimation. Here we assessed the utility of block design fMRI data for HRF modeling. The trueness (relative deviation), precision (relative uncertainty), and identifiability (goodness-of-fit) of different HRF models were examined and test–retest reproducibility of HRF parameter estimates was assessed using computer simulations and fMRI data from 82 healthy young adult twins acquired on two occasions 3 to 4 months apart. The effects of systematically varying attributes of the block design paradigm were also examined. In our comparison of five HRF models, the model comprising the sum of two gamma functions with six free parameters had greatest parameter accuracy and identifiability. Hemodynamic response function height and time to peak were highly reproducible between studies and width was moderately reproducible but the reproducibility of onset time was low. This study established the feasibility and test–retest reliability of estimating HRF parameters using data from block design fMRI studies.

The present experiment was laid out in randomized block design maintaining three replications during the Rabi season of 2017-18 on three major Rabi season crops viz., cabbage, cauliflower, and French bean under four treatment viz., Sabuj Gold as principle sole nutrient supplement with recommended organic and inorganic plant protection inputs as well as recommended standard crop-specific inorganic cultivation practice to evaluate the bio-effectiveness of SABUJ GOLD as main organic manure. The result showed that 100% Organic Manure (Sabuj Gold as a primary nutrient supplement) + full organic recommended certified inputs (plant protection measures) had a predominant significant effect on almost all the characters under study, specifically plant height (26.89 cm in cabbage, 45.32 cm in cauliflower and 55.24 cm in French bean), number of primary branches (7.84 in French bean), leaf quantitative parameters, individual head weight in cabbage (1.32 g), curd weight of cauliflower (1.31 g), pod weight (3.37 g) and pod per plant (46.34) in French bean, yield (32.37 t/ha in cabbage, 17.58 t/ha in cauliflower and 8.94 t/ha in French bean), ascorbic acid in cabbage (65.24 mg/100g) and total chlorophyll in cabbage (445.61 mg/100 g). However, 100% Organic Manure (Sabuj Gold as a primary nutrient supplement) + full recommended inorganic supplement (plant protection measures) showed a significant effect on multiple characters such as  germination percentage (88.52 %) and ascorbic acid (31.62 mg/100 g) in cabbage, total chlorophyll (424.75 mg/ 100 g in cauliflower and 134.95 mg / 100g in French bean). From the above discussion, it could be concluded that Sabuj Gold as a substitute for inorganic plant nutrient along with organic or inorganic plant protection measures could be very effective in enhancement of important yield and quality-related characters of different commercially important vegetables.
