AbstractPower engineering is one of the key areas of sustainable development. Many countries create new concepts of environmental safety management and modify their energy systems to be in line with the goals of sustainable development in the EU. Sustainable development indicators can be a tool for monitoring the set goals of environmental safety management. The aim of the article is to assess the environmental safety management of the energy sector in Poland in relation to EU as well as presenting the concept of sustainable energy development and indicators used to assess the development of energy in the following dimensions: social, economic and ecological. The indicators used to assess the sustainable development of energy in the following dimensions were compared: sustainable consumption and production, marking the production and consumption of energy; organizations and sites with eco-management and audit scheme (EMAS); registration climate change, marking GHG emissions and the share of renewable energy in gross final energy consumption; sustainable transport, marking the energy consumption of transport relative to GDP. The article will test the hypothesis that the structure of obtaining energy in Poland and the tempo of change in this respect differ from the EU average.

Abstract The field of sustainable development has global goals focused on the repletion of wants of natural resources for present-day generations in terms of sustainable consumption so that future generations can meet their needs. Sustainable development can be achieved by substantially transforming national agency systems. The aim of the research is to determine role of monitoring and evaluation in the system of sustainable development of the territory. The methods used in this study are general scientific techniques and methods – analysis, logical access method, monographic and other methods. Some international standards for sustainable development have been adopted today. Monitoring and targeted indicator ratings are measures that promote sustainable development. The following conceptual approaches to monitoring can be distinguished for the purpose of monitoring: 1) monitoring as information and analytical support for the management decision support system; 2) monitoring aimed at generating new knowledge; 3) monitoring as a system for tracking quantitative and qualitative changes; 4) monitoring as sequential activity algorithm; 5) object state on-line monitoring; 6) proactive monitoring. Aims should be set to manage the sustainable development process and evaluate the effectiveness of the tools used to achieve it. Sustainable development indicators are necessary to establish the degree of responsibility of their values to the criteria for sustainable development.

The purpose of the article is to analyse the uniformity of changes over time concerning sustainable development of the European Union. Such analyses are particularly important as the pursuit of sustainable development of the EU countries is one of its strategic developmental objectives. The informational basis of the study were the sustainable development indicators for the years 2009—2014 published by the Eurostat. Vector calculus was used to examine the uniformity of changes. The results of the analysis confirmed significant differences in, both across regions in Europe and EU member countries.

Sustainable development aims for a better future for us and future generations. To follow it, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was developed, which proposes, through its 17 objectives, the intervention directions. The 2030 Agenda was adopted by both Romania and the EU. Each objective is represented by a set of indicators. The objective of the paper is the comparative analysis of the most important indicators of sustainable development in EU and Romania. In this paper, the main indicators of sustainable development at EU level were analyzed. Subsequently, the same indicators were investigated in Romania, to perform a comparative analysis. The research used secondary data. Romania's declared objective is to be a regional leader in implementing Sustainable Development goals. Based on the results obtained on data available in 2020, a set of recommendations was developed to reach the proposed target for 2030. Analyzing the sustainable development indicators for EU and Romania against the new EU 2030 Agenda. The paper provides an overview of the Sustainable development of Romania. Its main indicators are compared against the values at EU level, resulting in relevant recommendations that can be implemented to meet the goals of EU 2030 Agenda.

Abstract Many national and EU strategies and documents put targets that will lead to a positive change for people and better life. For examples, the EU 2020 strategy assess the progress by indicators focused on employment, investment in research and development, education, energy efficient and risk of poverty. The system for monitoring of sustainable development in Bulgaria includes 56 indicators grouped in ten key areas such as socio-economic development, sustainable consumption and production, social inclusion, demographic changes, public health, sustainable transport, natural resources, global partnership and good governance. But at regional level, these sets of indicators are difficult to apply by many reasons. The aim of research was testing of an approach for survey of the sustainable development of a territorial unit. A complex index for assessment of sustainable development of territorial units was design by set of significant indicators, which evaluate socio-economic conditions for life and development in the territorial unit. The approach and the index were applied for survey of NUTS 3 level regions in Bulgaria, according the EU legislation, by using the last available official data of the National Statistical Institute of Bulgaria. Benefits of the approach using were summarized.

Abstract The aim of our study is to compare Visegrad countries and the other EU member states regarding sustainable development, based on the system of Sustainable Development Indicators of the European Union. We provide a brief overview of almost two decades of elaborating the Sustainable Development Strategy of the Community, review the structure and the main elements of the strategic document, and – using the method of cluster analyses – we group the member states comparing them on the basis of specific headline indicators. Our goal was not a deep investigation, but a compact, thought-provoking analysis; this is the reason why we concentrated on the main indicators. As a result of the analysis, our hypothesis seems to be confirmed: the EU-15 countries and the rest of the member states belong to different clusters, which means that there are significant inequalities, especially from the economic and social aspects of sustainability.

The article emphasizes the fact that traditional socio-economic indicators do not reflect the challenges of sustainable development adequately, and this is particularly true for the widely-used GDP indicator. In this connection the elaboration of sustainable development indicators is needed, taking into account economic, social and environmental factors. For Russia, adaptation and use of concepts and basic principles of calculation methods for adjusted net savings index (World Bank) and human development index (UNDP) as integral indicators can be promising. The authors have developed the sustainable development index for Russia, which aggregates and allows taking into account balanced economic, social and environmental indicators.

Ensuring the sustainable development of agroecosystems requires research into the justification of the impact of environmental factors on the formation of territorial agroecosystems and identifies ways to take them into account in order to justify management decisions and ensure environmental safety. The main goal of the research within the article is to identify the most significant environmental factors in predicting the formation of agroecosystems. Provisions are devoted to the study of the laws governing the functioning of agroecosystems in order to increase their stability. The methods of comparative analysis, generalization, abstraction, logical analysis are applied. A number of provisions are formulated regarding ways to account for the influence of factors on the formation of key elements of agroecosystems.

In the process of economic development, the consumption of energy leads to environmental pollution. Environmental pollution affects the sustainable development of the world, and therefore energy consumption needs to be controlled. To help China formulate sustainable development policies, this paper proposes an energy consumption forecasting model based on an improved whale algorithm optimizing a linear support vector regression machine. The model combines multiple optimization methods to overcome the shortcomings of traditional models. This effectively improves the forecasting performance. The results of the projection of China’s future energy consumption data show that current policies are unable to achieve the carbon peak target. This result requires China to develop relevant policies, especially measures related to energy consumption factors, as soon as possible to ensure that China can achieve its peak carbon targets.
