Abstract Purpose New developments in the study of delayed recognition are discussed. Design/methodology/approach Based on these new developments a method is proposed to characterize delayed recognition as a fuzzy concept. Findings A benchmark value of 0.333 corresponding with linear growth is obtained. Moreover, a case is discovered in which an expert found delayed recognition several years before citation analysis could discover this phenomenon. Research limitations As all citation studies also this one is database dependent. Practical implications Delayed recognition is turned into a fuzzy concept. Originality/value The article presents a new way of studying delayed recognition.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to draw on recent developments in the open innovation literature to explore whether the openness of SMEs to the four categories of external sources of information (ESI) is complementary, substitute or independent, while assessing the determinants of SMEs’ openness to these ESI. Design/methodology/approach This research is based on data from a survey of 451 manufacturing SMEs in the province of Québec, Canada. Data have been elaborated through a multivariate probit model to empirically show that SMEs are considered to be simultaneously open to different ESI. The results of this study show significant heterogeneity in the determinants of SMEs’ openness to these ESI. Findings The study found that the SMEs’ openness to different ESI seems to be complementary rather than substitute; and not all variables included in the model explain the SMEs’ openness to the different ESI. Practical implications The paper provides practical implications for managers and policy makers including the SMEs’ managers’ role to recognize the consolidation of different ESI jointly instead of separately. Furthermore, managers and policy makers should attempt to provide a fair context to SMEs to manage their openness ecosystem. Originality/value This study is virtually the first to investigate both the complementarity and the determinants of SMEs’ openness to different ESI using a sophisticated econometric model.

Findings – Fierce competition remains a major characteristic of today’s business environment. Securing and sustaining an edge over market rivals has arguably never been as tough. Many organizations can undoubtedly testify as much. The challenge is invariably even more intense within certain industries. Those associated with technology spring readily to mind here. New developments emerge with such frequency that there seems few periods when such sectors actually stand still. One of the more obvious categories that is subject to rapid change is mobile phones. Indeed, relentless innovation is par for the course within this sector. Practical implications – The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value – The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.

Purpose – While the primary importance of citation searching continues to be connecting researchers to highly-related literature, additional uses for the data have developed. For example, academic institutions frequently recommend that faculty include a citation analysis in their tenure and promotion (t & p) dossiers as a way of demonstrating the value of their research. Due to the limited number of tools available for this type of analysis in the past, Librarians were unable to help faculty create an exhaustive accounting of citations to their work. The aim of this paper is to provide examples of the growing number of tools that now exist to assist librarians and faculty in locating citation information for t & p dossiers. Design/methodology/approach – An in-depth survey of both free and subscription resources to identify those that offered options for citation searching was conducted. Findings – Commercial vendors, organizations and researchers are developing a wide variety of tools that help track the impact of a faculty member's research. Research limitations/implications – The list of resources surveyed is not comprehensive. The research was focused on those available, and most relevant to the author's institution. Practical implications – Based on the results of this investigation, a web page was created to help direct faculty and librarians to a large number of resources for citation searching (available at: http://libresources.wichita.edu/citationsearching). Originality/value – Librarians have prepared numerous web guides to assist faculty in conducting citation searches. Few offer links to as wide a variety of resources as this research presents.

Goal: To analyse the intersection between the constructs of modularity and business model in the literature. Design/Methodology/Approach: Quantitative and Qualitative approaches were utilized through bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review. A bibliometric analysis incorporates keywords, co-citation, and country co-authorship networks generated using VosViewer Software. The research in the databases was carried out in June 2018. Results: The intersection of modularity and business model is a rather recent study topic in the literature with a small number of articles published up to 2018. Although the concept of modularity has been widely discussed in terms of product, process and organizational levels, recent developments point to the application of this concept to services and business models. Limitations: The main limitation refers to the sampling process that incorporated articles extracted from ISI Web of Science Core Collection only. Practical implications: For practice, it provides companies with insights on how business model and modularity may be applied to multiple domains and can eventually contribute to firm performance and business model innovation. Originality/Value: The originality of the article lies in providing a panorama of the literature on the intersection of business model and modularity in order to identify the main research trends.

Purpose Recent developments suggest that pharmaceutical companies are acquiring existing products through mergers to improve their business models; however, this paper aims to emphasize R&D as a strategy to boost revenues and counteract the risks of existing products that may be unreliable. In light of Pfizer’s upcoming US$160 billion merger deal with Allergan, the paper’s objective is to illuminate the outcomes of Pfizer’s previous megamergers (>US$10 billion) to indicate what could happen to the company’s economic profits if it only focused on the acquisition of established drugs instead of diversifying and creating new products. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a combination of industry studies to make an assessment of the economic implications of conducting a megamerger (highlighting the need for further R&D). The assessment included a review of Pfizer’s M&A outcomes in two of its previous megamergers and an evaluation of a McKinsey study conducted on the economic impact of 17 pharmaceutical megamergers. Findings The paper provides insights on the negative profit outcomes in Pfizer’s past megamergers. Furthermore, the positive profit outcomes of pharmaceutical megamergers demonstrate that other M&A motives, such as R&D rationalization and product diversification, may be responsible for bringing up the group’s performance. Investing in R&D would be a good strategy for Pfizer to counteract the risk of relying on existing products as revenue generators. Practical implications The paper provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world’s leading organizations. Originality/value The paper suggests that Pfizer should place more emphasis on R&D as a revenue generator in face of its upcoming US$160 billion megamerger with Allergan, despite the current industry trends favouring the acquisition of existing products.
