Abstract We present the first database-wise study on the citation contexts of retracted papers, which covers 7,813 retracted papers indexed in PubMed, 169,434 citations collected from iCite, and 48,134 citation contexts identified from the XML version of the PubMed Central Open Access Subset. Compared with previous citation studies that focused on comparing citation counts using two time frames (i.e., pre-retraction and post-retraction), our analyses show the longitudinal trends of citations to retracted papers in the past 60 years (1960-2020). Our temporal analyses show that retracted papers continued to be cited, but that old retracted papers stopped being cited as time progressed. Analysis of the text progression of pre- and post-retraction citation contexts shows that retraction did not change the way the retracted papers were cited. Furthermore, among the 13,252 post-retraction citation contexts, only 722 (5.4%) citation contexts acknowledged the retraction. In these 722 citation contexts, the retracted papers were most commonly cited as related work or as an example of problematic science. Our findings deepen the understanding of why retraction does not stop citation and demonstrate that the vast majority of post-retraction citations in biomedicine do not document the retraction. Evaluation of library collections is a mandatory activity that must be done librarian to keep the qualityof collection and existence of the library. The purpose of this study is to explain the efforts made librarians infulfilling the needs of userinformation through collection evaluation in library with ALA standar. This research usesdescriptive qualitative approach using literature study. The results showed that evaluation of library collectioncan be done with two methods. First, centralized method on a collection; by checking lists, bibliographies, andcatalogs, expert opinions (subject specialist), and comparisons of statistical data. Second, the comparison methodwith various collection standards; by analyzing circulation studies, user opinions, analysis of library borrowingbetween libraries, citation studies, on-site usage studies (reading room), and availability of shelf collections.Librarians must evaluate collections periodically to keep the collection quality as user needs.

Abstract Purpose New developments in the study of delayed recognition are discussed. Design/methodology/approach Based on these new developments a method is proposed to characterize delayed recognition as a fuzzy concept. Findings A benchmark value of 0.333 corresponding with linear growth is obtained. Moreover, a case is discovered in which an expert found delayed recognition several years before citation analysis could discover this phenomenon. Research limitations As all citation studies also this one is database dependent. Practical implications Delayed recognition is turned into a fuzzy concept. Originality/value The article presents a new way of studying delayed recognition.

During the citation study of serial publications with the use of Journal Citation Reports®(JCR) a number of items are being revealed (among others) which abbreviated titles cannot be identified with the use of the JCR itself. Typically, such sources are considered unimportant, because they do not have an «impact factor». However, our analysis of the information sources, which abbreviated titles could not be identified with the use of the Journal Citation Reports® itself, convinced us that such sources can be really useful for the specialists. It was also discovered that in the JCR there are mistakes of writing of abbreviated titles in two different ways that relate even the periodicals included in the «master list», i. e. the sources having abbreviated titles established for JCR. The content of the present citation study of serial publications in relation to their ability to support research in the subject of «energy security and energy efficiency, energy efficient technologies and appliances» has made it possible to identify a number of different consequences of such mistakes and the reasons for them. It was found, for example, that the use of double and multiple different abbreviations for the titles of the same serial publication is either due to their objectively existing dual title misinterpreted by the indexers, or due to the inclusion in the citation data of the JCR full titles of the serial publications along with the abbreviated ones, and also by the inclusion in such data in some cases the year of publication or by indicating that the publication issue represents the conference proceedings. All the hard-to-identify abbreviations compel a bibliometrician to take time-consuming laborious identifications and verifications of such titles often followed by the recount of the resulting data.

This citation analysis examines the use of Spanish- and Portuguese-language books and articles in PhD dissertations on Latin America at the University of New Mexico between 2000 and 2009. Two sets of data are presented: The first identifies the use of Spanish- and Portuguese-language books and articles across 17 academic departments; and the second analyzes how well local holdings meet demands for a select geographical area—Mexico. These local data contradict conclusions in general citation studies of the humanities, social sciences and foreign languages. They prove that preconceived ideas about foreign language usage from general citation studies do not provide reliable templates for local acquisition decisions. Librarians need to look at their research communities and local usage habits instead of relying on general studies for answers.

Citation studies and analyses of usage statistics are two approaches academic librarians take to determine if their journal collections support the needs of research faculty. Librarians at a small, regional liberal arts university compiled a list of faculty journal publications covering a thirteen-year span from four academic departments—nursing, chemistry, biology, and mathematics—and, from these publications, generated a list of the journals that were cited. As expected, this university’s faculty members publish in many of the same journals that they cite. However, faculty members cite a wide range of sources. Wiley journal usage statistics were examined from 2011 and 2012 to determine if the number of PDF downloads of articles in the published in and cited Wiley journals were higher than the average numbers of PDF downloads of Wiley journals. Combining an analysis of usage statistics with citation analysis provides a more strategic way to look at a Big Deal package. This information is of interest to the departments represented and other stakeholders, and the implications for collection development purposes are addressed.

A citation analysis of publications produced by the Department of Atmospheric Sciences faculty at Texas A&M University was conducted. This study included a detailed analysis of 5,082 cited publications by source, format, and age. TAMU Libraries holdings were then assessed using the works cited within the context of the 80/20 rule. The sources cited were primarily journals (91 percent) and books (5 percent). Eighty percent of the cited journal articles were fulfilled by just 24 journal titles, thus adhering to the 80/20 rule. The results were compared to those of previous citation studies in the sciences, with implications for collection management.

This study examines 20,802 citations in 555 journal articles devoted to criticism of English and American literature published in 2003. Books are cited far more often (75.8%) than journal articles (19.8%). Over half of the monographs cited (55.4%) are less than twenty years old. In general, journal articles published within the past twenty years are the most frequently cited. Literary scholars use a diversity of monographs which fall outside of the core classifications for literature; over 40% are outside. This study is compared to other citation studies of English and American literature. It concludes with observations on the use of the Web, browsing by literary researchers, and English as an interdisciplinary field.
