Abstract This work is one of the first studies on the growth of Poecilia latipinna outside its natural habitat. The objective of our study was to investigate the growth parameters of the population of P. latipinna, which is an alien species in Oman (Wadi Al-Bahayes). The population structure of P. latipinna in Wadi Al-Bahayes (Oman; 23°40′47″N; 58°11′36″E) was studied in June and August 2020, using 124 fish. In the course of this study, the number of individuals of each sex, age, weight and size composition were determined. In addition, the total length–weight relationship (LRW) was calculated, as well as the von Bertalanffy growth equation. The mean growth performance (phi prime) and the condition factor were calculated. Males accounted for 37.10% and females for 62.90% of the population. The length–weight relationship and the von Bertalanffy growth equation were W = 0.0214 × L 2.7889 R2 = 0.9212, Lt = 11.46 (1 − e −0.127 (t + 2.71)) for males and Lt = 14.51 (1 − e−0.072 (t + 3.98)) for females. The mean growth performance and the condition factor were calculated as 1.22 for males and 1.18 for females and 1.54 for all specimens. The study shows that the population of the species is characterized by a wide age range. Consequently, monitoring of this alien species is highly recommended.

Age composition, length-weight relationships, growth, and condition factors of the gibel carp (Carassius gibelio Bloch, 1782) were determined using specimens collected from Seyitler Reservoir between July 2005 to June 2006. A total of 149 gibel carp were observed and examined. The age composition of the samples ranged between I and VII years of age. It has been determined than 82.55% of the obtained samples are comprised of females, 16.11% is comprised of males and 1.34% is comprised of immature. The population is dominated by females able to reproduce gynogenetically. The mean fork lengths and mean weights of the population were 14.8-32.5 cm and 43.1-807.3 g respectively. The length-weight relation were calculated as W = 0.0696 L2.132, r=0.838 for females, for males W = 0.2942 L2.6417 r=0.784 and W = 0.0274 L2.9382, r=0.813 for all samples. The mean Fulton Condition Factor was calculated as 2.342 for females, 2.064 for males and 2.276 for all samples. Age-length and age-weight relations were determined according to von Bertalanffy growth equation formula. Growth parameters of the population were Lt = 48.09 [1-e-0.093(t+0.29)], and Wt=2323.62 [1-e-0.093(t+0.29)]2.9382. The growth performance index value (Ø´) was computed as 5.37 for all specimens.

Caroun croaker (Johnius carouna) is one of demersal fishes which are commonly caught in the south of Java waters. This fish captured by trammel net, gillnet, danish seine and mini trawl. This study aims to determine length and weight relationship, growth parameter, length frequency distribution and condition factors of croaker fish caught in the south of Java waters.   This study was conducted from January-December 2015 at the Cilacap Ocean Fisheries Port, Central Java. Data collected was total length (TL in mm) and weight (W in g) of caroun croacker fish.  A total of 2141 of Caroun croaker was caught by mini trawl during the sampling periods. The result showed that the size of croaker fish caught by mini trawl ranged between 85-225 mm with an average was 143.7 mm. Length and weight relationship expressed by equation of W = 0.0062 TL3.2889 ( R2 = 0.9443). The growth pattern of croaker fish was allometric positive. The Von Bertalanffy growth equation of caroun croacker fish in south of Java waters was Lt =155 (1 - e -0.9(t+0.2127)) with the asymptotic length (L∞) =155  mm, growth coefficient (K) = 0.9 per year and the theoretical age croaker fish that was equal to (t0) = - 0,2127.

The growth in length of a group of animals is examined. Each animal is assumed to grow according to the von Bertalanffy model with fixed parameters, but these parameters are allowed to differ between individuals. Equations governing the mean and variance of length at given age and growth increment at given length are provided, and their implications discussed. Results indicate that the traditional growth equation is likely to result in an underestimate of the mean value of K when either length at age or growth increment data are analyzed. This problem does not appear serious when using length at age data. However, the problems of interpretation are more serious in the case of growth increment data where serious overestimates of the reconstructed mean length at age can result. A thorough analysis of growth cannot be made for a population exhibiting individual variability in L∞ and K from growth increment data alone. In particular a nonlinear relationship between growth increment and initial length does not necessarily imply that the von Bertalanffy model is inappropriate to the species in question. A topic urgently in need of examination is the form of the joint distribution of K and L∞ in animal populations.Key words: von Bertalanffy, growth models

The spatial distribution, density, growth rate, longevity, mortality and recruitment patterns of the long-lived clamArctica islandicain Belfast Lough, Northern Ireland, UK are described. TheA. islandicapopulation at Belfast Lough appears to be restricted to a small area at the mouth of the Lough. Additional searches for specimens further into the Lough and into deeper waters found no evidence of a larger more widespread population and we report population densities of 4.5 individuals m−2. The ages of the clams were determined from the number of internal annual growth lines in acetate peel replicas of shell sections. The population growth curve was fitted using the Von Bertalanffy growth equation: Lt = 93.7 mm (1−e−0.03(t–1.25)). Based on catch curve analysis, the Belfast Lough population has an estimated longevity of 220 years and a natural mortality rate of 0.02. We compare growth characteristics and life history traits in this population with other analogousA. islandicapopulations. The overall growth performance and the phi-prime index were used to compare growth parameters with data from the literature and we observed no significant relationship between the growth performance indices and longevity or latitude. Analysis of the age-structure and reconstructed dates of settlement indicate that this population has experienced almost continual recruitment over the last century with a gap in successful recruitment into the population 90–100 years ago and another 140–150 years ago. The size-structure revealed a scarcity of small individuals which we believe may be an artefact of the dredge sampling process.

In the present study, several growth parameters of 338 Squalius cephalus (L., 1758) specimens collected from the Orenler dam lake (Turkey) between July 2005 and June 2006 were studied. The population comprised 50.74% males, 46.29% females, and 2.97% males+females. In the examined samples, the age of females and males ranged from I to VII and I to VI, respectively. The fork length and weight of females were 14.7-38.0 cm and 40.68-27.0 g, respectively; these values were 16.3-33.7 cm and 57.7-560.0 g, respectively, for males. The age-length and age-weight relationships at time t were calculated by the von Bertalanffy equation for females, and the following results were obtained: Lt = 37.12[1–e–0.36(t–(–0.96))], Wt = 775.6[1–e–0.36(t–(–0.96))]3.27, Lt = 43.59[1–e–0.3356(t–(–0.719))], and Wt = 1123.2[1–e–0.3356(t–(–0.719))]3.08. The calculated length-weight relationship was W = 0.36L3.27 for females and W = 0.03356L3.08 for males. The average condition factor was 1.412 for females and 1.284 for males. Consequently, in the Orenler dam lake, S. cephalus grows very well according to the study’s results.

In this study, the age and some growth characteristics of the European hake, Merluccius merluccius, from the northeastern Mediterranean were examined during 2015-2016 fishing season. A total of 661 European hake ranging from 9.8 to 51.6 cm in total length was captured by commercial trawler. Female/male ratio was 1/1.15. Age determination was conducted using the sagittal otoliths. Ages of examined individuals ranged from 1 to 7 years. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters fitted to the average measured total lengths-at-age for each sex separately and estimated as L∞= 93.98 cm, k= 0.114 year-1, t0= -0.597 year for females, as L∞= 77.65 cm , k= 0.153 year-1, t0= -0.343 year for males and as L∞= 84.44 cm, k= 0.135 year-1, t0= -0.469 year for combined sexes. The growth performance value (Φ) of the European hake population was computed as 2.98 for combined sexes. Mean condition factor value for population was 0.654±0.021; the highest condition factor was found as 1.01 in fish at age 7.

The size, age and condition of Perth herring, N. vlaminghi, in the Swan Estuary in south-western Australia, were investigated between February 1977 and January 1980 using samples collected by beach seine and gill net. An examination of scale annuli showed that the population consisted predominantly of age classes 0+ to 4 +. By the end of their first year of life, Perth herring had reached mean lengths of 105 mm (= 9.8 g) in 1977, 105 mm (= 10.0 g) in 1978, and 95 mm (= 7.9 g) in 1979. The von Bertalanffy growth equation was calculated to be Lt = 381{1 -exp[- O.17(t + 0.6S)]}. During winter, the growth rate declined markedly and the mean condition factor fell to its lowest level. Perth herring started to make a major contribution to the important commercial fishery for this species during their third year of life.

Length frequency analisys were applied for sardine data collected from commercial catches throughout the southeastern Brazilian coast in 1977-1987. Age/length keys were obtained by otolith ring countings and utilized to transform length into age composition. Growth parameters were estimated by the von Bertalanffy growth equation using age and length data for each year and for all the period of investigation. The mean growth parameters for the entire period were estimated as L∞ = 271 mm and K= 0.59 year-1. Instantaneous total mortality (Z) coefficients per year were estimated using catch curves and methods based on the mean length of the fish caught. Total mortality rate for the entire period was obtained through the average of the annual values. Natural mortality (M) was estimated using the Paul/s empirical equation (1980a), and fishing mortality (F) by the difference between total and natural mortality values. The results were Z = 3.6 year-1; M = 0.96 year-1; and F= 2.6 year-1.
