Abstract This piece of work investigates the relation between characters in a play based on turntaking dialogues. As the dialogues are related to each other in the play, numbers of turn-taking are significant of the characters’ relationship and the utterances give indication about the information content of the interaction. In this Manipuri radio play, the sequence of turns taken by the characters convey different amount of information with different functions. Numbers of dialogues oscillate significantly with a period of 2 scenes during the play. The degree of oscillation present in turn-taking dialogues carries significant information functions. The nature of the relationship between the characters involved and the theme of the play may be characterised by calculations on turn-taking dialogues.

Franchising has long been a method by which organizations seek to expand and facilitate local market development. However, franchising as a growth strategy can often be hampered by lack of suitable franchisees. To mitigate this shortage, some franchisors have engaged in recruiting franchisees internally from the ranks of their employees in addition to the traditional approach of recruiting franchisees externally. Predominantly franchisees are individuals rather than corporations and thus purchasing a franchise should most commonly be characterized as a consumer acquisition. To explore the relationship between subjective knowledge, perceived risk, and information search behaviors when purchasing a franchise qualitative interviews were conducted with franchisees from the restaurant industry. Half of these respondents were externally recruited having never worked for the franchisor and half were internally recruited having previously been employees of the franchisor. The external recruits expressed a strong desire to own their own business and engaged in extensive decision-making processes with significant information search when purchasing their franchises. Contrastingly, the internal recruits expressed a strong desire to be their own boss and engaged in limited, bordering on habitual decision-making processes with negligible information search when acquiring their franchises. The results reveal that differences in subjective knowledge and perceived risk appear to significantly impact the extent of information search between these two groups. A model of the relationship between subjective knowledge, perceived risk and information search in the purchasing of a franchise is developed that reconciles these findings. The findings also have practical implications for franchisors’ franchisee recruiting efforts which are integral to their capacity to develop local markets.

A tool which algorithmically traces the effectiveness of the text files would be helpful in determining whether the text file have all the characteristic of important concepts. Every text source is build up on key phrases, and these paramount phrases follow a certain grammatical linguistic pattern widely used. An enormous amount of information can be derived from these key concepts for the further analysis such as their dispersion, relationship among the concepts etc. The relationship among the key concepts can be used to draw a concept graphs. So, this chapter presents a detailed methodologies and technologies which evaluate the effectiveness of the extracted information from text files.

Three experiments were performed which examined the applicability of the Hick-Hyman law to the design of an auditory interface for a vehicle collision avoidance warning system. All trials used a single broadband noise signal emanating from one of a subset of six loudspeakers equally spaced around the subject in the azimuthal plane. Both the size of the sub-set and the balance of relative probabilities from speaker to speaker were altered to evaluate the relationship between information content and the dependent variable, choice reaction time. Choice reaction time was found to be related to the information content of the sound stimulus in all cases. It was also found to be related to the presence of pairs of speakers which were symmetrically opposed to one another in front of and behind the subject.

The research on information quantization is important in the field of information theory. As a result, based on the quantum theory, the information was quantified from the information receiving aspect in this report. First of all, several concepts were presented, such as the InfoBar, the Amount of Information and the Power of Information as well as the algorithm of the Power of Information. Then, according to the relationship between the InfoBar and the amount of Information, the wave equation was decided based on the receiving information, meanwhile, the equation of wave function was defined as well. Finally, via the numerical simulation, the received model results as well as the sample result were basically matched. Thus, the validity of the model can be proved.

A fundamental problem in extracting scene structure is distinguishing different physical sources of image structure. Light reflected by an opaque surface covaries with local surface orientation, whereas light transported through the body of a translucent material does not. This suggests the possibility that the visual system may use the covariation of local surface orientation and intensity as a cue to the opacity of surfaces. We tested this hypothesis by manipulating the contrast of luminance gradients and the surface geometries to which they belonged and assessed how these manipulations affected the perception of surface opacity/translucency. We show that (i) identical luminance gradients can appear either translucent or opaque depending on the relationship between luminance and perceived 3D surface orientation, (ii) illusory percepts of translucency can be induced by embedding opaque surfaces in diffuse light fields that eliminate the covariation between surface orientation and intensity, and (iii) illusory percepts of opacity can be generated when transparent materials are embedded in a light field that generates images where surface orientation and intensity covary. Our results provide insight into how the visual system distinguishes opaque surfaces and light-permeable materials and why discrepancies arise between the perception and physics of opacity and translucency. These results suggest that the most significant information used to compute the perceived opacity and translucency of surfaces arise at a level of representation where 3D shape is made explicit.

Purpose – This paper aims to examine whether information search frequency of accounting information is related to the explanatory power of accounting information for firm market value. It also examines whether information content and state of nature can have an impact on this relationship. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is an empirical study using Web search volume data collected from Google Trends and financial and market data collected from Compustat. Findings – This paper finds that investors use Web search engines as an alternative way to search for information they need, search frequency of accounting information is positively related to the explanatory power of accounting information for firm market value, the relationship is found differential between statements and categories within a statement depending on the information content and the relationship is found stronger during economic upturns. Research limitations/implications – This paper examines 59 accounting items that are cross-firm commonly reported and that have data availability in Compustat. The external validity might be an issue. Practical implications – This paper is of interest to standard setters, corporate management and academics who wish to understand and improve the value of accounting information in the capital market. Originality/value – This paper is the first study which provides a comprehensive examination of the impact of investors’ information search volumes on the explanatory power of accounting information. It is also the first paper that intrudes Google Trends search volume data into accounting research.
