Abstract Overview of research papers of International conference of Environmental and Climate Technologies (CONECT 2019) illustrates the wide range of topics covered in the issue. All overviewed articles are published in the Special Issue (Part I and Part II) of the Journal of Environmental and Climate Technologies. Scientific articles are divided into 5 thematic clusters: renewable energy resources, energy efficiency, policy and policy tools, waste management and bioeconomy that charts energy, bioeconomy, climate change and environment nexus.

The use of renewable energies has a long past, even though its share of the total energy use is rather low in European terms. However, the tendencies are definitely favourable which is further strengthened by the dedication of the European Union to sustainable development and combat against climate change. The European Union is on the right track in achieving its goal which is to be able to cover 20% its energy need from renewable energy resources by 2020. The increased use of wind, solar, water, tidal, geothermal and biomass energy will reduce the energy import dependence of the European Union and it will stimulate innovation.

Abstract The development of the marine renewable energy and offshore aquaculture sectors is susceptible to being affected by climate change. Consequently, for the long-term planning of these activities, a holistic view on the effects of climate change on energy resources and environmental conditions is required. Based on present climate and future climate scenario, favourable conditions for wind and wave energy exploitation and for farming six marine fish species are assessed using a suitability index over all European regional seas. Regarding available energy potential, the estimated changes in climate do not have direct impacts on the geographic distribution of potential regions for the energy industry (both wind and wave based), that is they pose no threat to this industry. Long-term changes in environmental conditions could however require adaptation of the aquaculture sector and especially of its exploitation areas. Opportunities for aquaculture expansion of the assessed species are identified. Possibilities for co-location of these activities are observed in the different climate scenarios. The evaluation of potential zones for the exploitation of marine renewable energy resources and offshore aquaculture represents a stepping-stone, useful for improving decision-making and assisting in the management of marine economies both in the short-term and in the long-term development of these sectors.

Assessment of renewable energy resources such as surface solar radiation and wind current has great relevance in the development of local and regional energy policies. This paper examines the variability and availability of these resources as a function of possible climate changes for the Caribbean region. Global climate changes have been reported in the last decades, causing changes in the atmospheric dynamics, which affects the net solar radiation balance at the surface and the wind strength and direction. For this investigation, the future climate changes for the Caribbean are predicted using the parallel climate model (PCM) and it is coupled with the numerical model regional atmospheric modeling system (RAMS) to simulate the solar and wind energy spatial patterns changes for the specific case of the island of Puerto Rico. Numerical results from PCM indicate that the Caribbean basin from 2041 to 2055 will experience a slight decrease in the net surface solar radiation (with respect to the years 1996–2010), which is more pronounced in the western Caribbean sea. Results also indicate that the easterly winds have a tendency to increase in its magnitude, especially from the years 2070 to 2098. The regional model showed that important areas to collect solar energy are located in the eastern side of Puerto Rico, while the more intense wind speed is placed around the coast. A future climate change is expected in the Caribbean that will result in higher energy demands, but both renewable energy sources will have enough intensity to be used in the future as alternative energy resources to mitigate future climate changes.

The global reality, intensively exposed to the challenges caused by climate changes, demands new ideas, methods and tools which could eventually prevent or mitigate the consequences of carbon emissions. Therefore, the contemporary cities, as focal points of the new global comprehension, have become testing grounds for numerous initiatives based upon imperatives of sustainability, environmental consciousness, energy efficiency and ?green? life style. In Serbia, experience in matters of the built environment has had a tendency to be formed exclusively on the basis of authentic local initiatives, aspirations, successes and failures. In the global effort for sustainable development, considering the commitments imposed by climate change and carbon emission, a greater reliance on results achieved elsewhere would be a welcome change. Consequently, this article will present and comment two eco-driven projects - Sarriguren and J?tk?saari, both covering a wide range of useful ideas, intriguing concepts and globally applicable solutions for the challenges caused by climate shifts.
