AbstractIn 2005, root and soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of Viburnum sp. plants in the yard of a house in Kifissia, Attica, Greece. The plants showed symptoms of yellowing and declining and all were dead within, approximately, one year. The roots were infected with the fungus Rosellinia necatrix. Several specimens of a ring nematode were recovered from soil and identified as Mesocriconema xenoplax based on morphological and morphometrical analysis of females. The nematode had been previously found on grapevines in Samos and Crete islands. This is the first report of M. xenoplax in Greece and the first record of Viburnum sp. as a host for this ring nematode. Additional information regarding distribution of this nematode in Greece is needed.

Soil samples were collected from the rhizosphere of mulberry (Morus alba L.) trees, in a 1,000 m² plot, at the Experimental Farm Santa Lucia, in Barva, Heredia, Costa Rica, in August 2013. The plants showed symptoms of yellowing, declining and poor development. Specimens of two ring nematode were collected from the soil and identified as Mesocriconema sphaerocephalum (Taylor 1936) Loof 1989 and M. anastomoides (Maqbool & Shahina 1985) Loof & De Grisse 1989, based on the morphological and morphometrical analysis of females. Both nematodes have been previously found in Costa Rica. However, this is the first report of nematodes from the Criconematidae family associated to mulberry trees and it provides additional information on the distribution of this phytoparasite.

AbstractAdditional information on the recently described species, Enchodelus veletensis, is provided, with females, males, intersex and juveniles being described from a population recovered from soil samples collected about grasses in a natural region of north-western Iran. This is the first report of this species for male, intersex and juveniles. Nearly full length of 1560 bp 18S rDNA and 828 bp ITS1 were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rDNA supported two distinct monophyletic groups of Enchodelus species, those with rounded tail vs conical tail. Enchodelus veletensis is closely related to E. brevidentatus and E. arcuatus. It has identical sequences with E. brevidentatus in 638 bp partial 18S rDNA yet is morphologically distinct.

The authors describe a forty-one-year-old female with possible monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychosis (MHP): a delusional belief that she had contracted rabies. This is the first report of this type of delusion in MHP. The patient failed to respond to multiple somatic therapies and finally made a serious suicide attempt. The authors discuss the reasons for the failed treatment and suggest a sequential protocol for treatment of MHP based on the current literature.

This paper provides the first report of the snail-killing fly genus Dichetophora Rondani, 1868 on the Korean peninsula with the discovery of two new species, D. koreana sp. nov. and D. nigricorpa sp. nov. Descriptions and illustrations of the new species and keys to the Palearctic species of this genus are given.

The islands of Tinos and Syros in the Cyclades Archipelago, Greece, have a hilly terrain, a mild Mediterranean climate and vegetation adapted to drought conditions. Caper (<em>Capparis</em> <em>spinosa</em> L.) is highly adapted to arid environments and grows successfully during the Mediterranean summer. In August 2015, we detected serious infestations on wild caper by <em>Eurydema</em> <em>eckerleini</em> (Pentatomidae), which was formerly considered a species endemic to Crete and the Peloponnese, with an isolated report in Turkey. This is the first record of the presence of<em> E. eckerleini</em> in the Cyclades.

The blood infection by Trypanosoma sp. in tuvira (Gymnotus aff. inaequilabiatus) from the Pantanal wetland was reported in this study. Ten fish from the Paraguay River in the Pantanal were evaluated for the presence of hemoflagellates. Trypomastigotes of Trypanosoma sp. were observed in blood smears from three fish (30% prevalence) and some forms were seen to be undergoing division. Using the diagnostic methods of fresh examination and blood centrifugation in hematocrit capillary tubes, the prevalence rate was 80%. This is the first report of Trypanosoma sp. in tuvira in Brazil.

For several years, decline was observed in mature pecan (Carya illinoensis (F.A. Wangenheim) K. Koch) trees in an orchard in Dona Ana County, New Mexico despite normal fertilization and irrigation practices. Affected trees were growing in sandy soil in two widely separated irrigation terraces and exhibited chlorosis of foliage and substantial die-back of branches in the upper canopy. Examination of feeder roots revealed the presence of numerous small galls and egg masses, with root-knot nematode females often visibly protruding from root tissue. Attempts to culture the nematode on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. ‘Rutgers’) were unsuccessful. Females and egg masses were collected from fresh pecan roots and sent to the USDA Nematology Laboratory in Beltsville, MD, in October 2000, where specimens were identified as Meloidogyne partityla Kleynhans (1) based on morphological examination. This is the first report of M. partityla from New Mexico, and the second report of this nematode outside South Africa. Starr et al. (2) first reported M. partityla from pecan in the United States in 1996, after recovering the nematode from five orchards in Texas. In their study, the host range of M. partityla was limited to members of the Juglandaceae, which may explain the inability of the New Mexico population to reproduce on tomato. A new record of Plectropomus pessuliferus (Serranidae: Epinephelinae) wasdocumented based on morphological characters and DNA barcoding. The species was collectedduring a regular survey for making an inventory of reef associated fishes in Saint Martin`sIsland, Bangladesh. This is the first report of roving coral grouper from the marine waters ofBangladesh validated by morpho-meristic analysis and DNA barcoding. This is also the firstreport from the northern Bay of Bengal.

In October 2017, we collected five soil samples from each of several fields with a history of severe corn (Zea mays) seedling disease in Heilongjiang province of China. Affected seedlings were wilted with severe root rot, and a high incidence of seedling death was observed in the fields. Corn seeds were seeded in the collected soil samples and grown in a growth chamber for 21 days set at the following incubation temperatures: 21℃/7℃ for 6 days, 10℃/3℃ for 4 days, 16℃/7℃ for 5 days, 20℃/20℃ for 6 days (16 h/8 h, light/dark) (Tang et al. 2019). The corn seedlings in the growth chamber showed the same symptoms observed in the field as mentioned above. Corn root rot samples were collected from several symptomatic plants in the growth chamber to isolate the possible pathogen. Symptomatic roots were washed in 0.5% NaOCl for 2 min, rinsed in sterile water and cut into 1-2 mm segments and then plated on corn meal agar amended with pimaricin (5 μg/ml), ampicillin (250 μg/ml), rifampicin (10 μg/ml), pentachloronitrobenzene (50 μg/ml), and benomyl (10 μg/ml) (PARP+B), which is selective for oomycetes (Jeffers and Martin 1986). After 3 days of incubation in the dark at 25℃, colonies were transferred to 10% V8 juice agar and incubated at 25℃ for 2 weeks. Six isolates were identified as Pythium torulosum based on the morphology of sexual and asexual structures following van der Plaats-Niterink’s key (van der Plaats-Niterink 1981). On 10% V8 juice agar, the hypha were aseptate and colonies had filamentous sporangia with a dendroid or globose structure. The oogonia were globose or subglobose, laevis, terminal, rarely intercalary, ranging from 12-19 (average 16) μm. Antheridia were mostly sessile or brachypodous, and each oogonium was supplied by 1-2 antheridia cells. Oospores were globose, plerotic, ranging from 9-16 (average 13) μm. For the molecular identification, two molecular targets, the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of ribosomal DNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit II (CoII), were amplified and sequenced using universal primer sets DC6/ITS4 (Cooke et al. 2000) and FM58/FM66 (Villa et al. 2006), respectively for one isolate, “copt”. BLAST analyses of a 971 bp ITS segment amplified from copt (GenBank Accession No. MT830918) showed 99.79% identity with a P. torulosum isolate (GenBank Accession No. AY598624.2). For the COⅡ gene of copt, BLAST analyses of a 553 bp segment (GenBank Accession MT843570) showed 98.37% identity with P. torulosum isolate (GenBank Accession No. AB095065.1). Thus, the isolate, copt, was identified as P. torulosum based on morphological characteristics and molecular analysis. To confirm pathogenicity and Koch’s postulates, a pathogenicity test was conducted as described by Zhang et al. (2000). Briefly, a 5 mm culture plug from the P. torulosum isolate, copt, was transferred to a 9-cm petri dish containing 20mL 10% V8 juice agar and incubated in the dark at 25℃ for 7 days. The culture was cut into small pieces and mixed with a sterilized soil mix (40% organic peat substrate, 40% perlite, and 20% soil) at a ratio of one petri dish per 100 g soil mix. Ten corn seeds were planted at a depth of 2 cm in a 500-mL pot containing the inoculated soil mix. The control pots were mock inoculated with plain 10% V8 juice agar. Pots were incubated in a greenhouse at temperatures ranging from 21 to 23℃. There were four replications. After 14 days, corn roots brown and rotted were observed, which was similar to those observed in the field and growth chamber. Control plants remained symptomless and healthy. P. torulosum copt was consistently re-isolated from the symptomatic roots. To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. torulosum causing root rot of corn in Northeastern China. Corn is an important crop in Heilongjiang and the occurrence of root rot caused by this pathogen may be a new threat to corn plants. There is a need to develop management measures to control the disease.

The aquatic fern Pilularia americana A. Braun is known from several countries in South and North America. Here we provide a first report of this species for Peru, from 2 localities in the Ancash and Ayacucho regions (central Peru), which confirm its presence in the national flora.
