Abstract Research paper deals with the opinions of students of secondary schools on physical education lessons at school. The aim was to find out various aspects of education such as popularity, demandingness, importance of the subject, feelings and emotions during PE lessons, and sport preferences of young people. The results have shown that the opinions of students on popularity, significance, talent, motivation and effort exerted during PE lessons were more positive than negative. Boys stated that they consider the subject not difficult, popular, and they show effort at lessons. Girls stated that the subject is not demanding, popular, but in a smaller degree than boys. Girls marked the subject as less importantn they show less talent for it and are less motivated for it than boys. As to boys, PE & Sport lessons evoke always or mostly emotions, while the answers of girls oscillated between mostly emotional, sometimes emotional or sometimes unemotional. Difference between the answers of boys and girls was statistically significant on the level of p<0,05. The answers of boys and girls to the question concerning cancellation of a PE lesson were oscillating between the values 2 and 3 (I am often happy; my opinion is indifferent), despite the fact that they stated in the questionnaire that they mostly feel well at PE lessons. The difference between both genders is statistically significant on the level of p<0,05. The answers of boys and girls to the question concerning satisfaction with the content of PE lessons oscillated between the values 2 and 3 (satisfied; partially satisfied, partially not satisfied). Generally we can state that the answers of students were more positive than negative. The difference between the answers of both genders is not statistically significant on the level of 0,05 (p=0,07). The answers to the question concerning the quality of PE lessons oscillated between the values 2-3 (mostly of good quality, changing quality). Boys presented a little more positive answers than girls, however, the difference between both genders is not statistically significant on the level of 0,05 (p=0,411).

Empirical observations reveal low enrolment of senior secondary school students for physical education at external examination bodies. The poor rate of students' choice of the subject at this level is a matter of concern to professionals, given the fact of monumental benefits of physical education as a science subject to humanity. The study was conducted to examine how psycho-administrative factors influence the choice of physical education by senior secondary school students at external examination bodies (in Nigeria) to come up with modalities to increase enrolment of the subject at external examination bodies. Descriptive method was applied for the study due to large respondents involved. Self-developed validated questionnaire tagged psycho-administrative determinants for choice of physical education among senior secondary school students at external examination bodies (PADGPEAS) was applied for the research. Out of three thousand and twenty-four (3024) questionnaire forms administered, only two thousand and fifty (2950) copies completed and returned were coded for analysis, with the use of descriptive statistics of percentages and nonparametric statistics of Chi-square (x 2) at 0.05 level of significant. Results unraveled a remarkable influence of psycho-administrative variables on the choice at physical education among senior secondary school students at external examination bodies. Based on this outcome, it is suggested that utilization of variety of methods by physical education teachers will go a long way to kindle the interest of the students for the subject. Enlightenment of students and parents on the values of physical education will facilitate remarkable positive attitude of both parts that relocate their position in favor of the subject.

It should be unnecessary to say before a group of mathematics teachers that engineering educators are concerned with the kind of education our secondary schools are giving. Dean Steinberg has ably presented2 the importance of sound training in mathematics as a foundation for engineering education. I endorse his statement, but wish to add that the engineering schools are also vitally interested in the entire educational program of secondary school students, and in the quality of work they do, not only in their mathematics, but in all their subjects. Most of the progressive engineering colleges have for years attempted to improve and strengthen their relations with the secondary schools from which they draw students, chiefly by sincere efforts to furnish intelligent, authoritative, and objective guidance to secondary school students.

Abstract. Physical-sports practice generates numerous health benefits, adolescence being one of the key periods for the acquisition of healthy habits. Therefore, the subject of Physical Education is an ideal scenario for it, as relations between diverse variables (sports motivation, importance of Physical Education and motivational climate) and the continuity of the physical-sports practice can be found in it. However, few studies have analysed the influence of practising sports in a federated or non-federated way on these variables. It is for this reason that the objectives of this study are: to know the existing differences in sports motivation, motivational climate in Physical Education classes, and importance given to Physical Education classes, taking into account whether the students are federated in any sport or not; and to find out whether there are differences in the variables predicting intrinsic and extrinsic sports motivation, depending on whether the students are federated. A sample of 267 secondary school students was analysed using a questionnaire as the measuring instrument. The results show that there are differences in the extrinsic motivation and importance of physical education depending on whether adolescents practice sport in a federated way or not. In addition, although the predictors of both intrinsic and extrinsic sports motivation are the same for both groups, the importance of these variables varies according to whether adolescents were federated or not. Finally, a series of conclusions and practical implications for the design of Physical Education classes are presented.

Violations of social cognition significantly reduce quality of life. Studies of social cognition in orphans are rare while the data are conflicting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the type of attachment and peculiarities of social cognition in orphans. The author hypothesized that it will be difficult task for the orphans to recognize emotions. The study involved 57 people. The main group included 39 orphans living in an orphanage (25 boys, 14 girls). The average age was 14 years. The control subjects were 18 secondary school students living in the birth families (12 boys and 6 girls). The average age - 14 years. The results show that adolescent orphans have more difficulty interacting with other people, experience less pleasure from communicating, often use avoidance strategy. The number of orphans with avoidant attachment type is 1.5 times greater than in the control group. It is concluded that the type of attachment plays an important role in forming of social cognition. The results could be useful in basic and additional training of young people of this category.

Background. Given the documented decline in levels of physical activity in early adolescence, promoting physical activity in young people is a priority for health promotion. School physical education (PE) is an important existing network in which participation in physical activity beyond school can be promoted to the captive young people. The objective of current article is to present the protocol for a PE teacher-delivered theory-based trial to promote secondary school students’ participation in physical activity out-of-school contexts. The intervention will be guided by the trans-contextual model explaining the processes by which PE teachers’ support for autonomous motivation in the classroom promotes students’ motivation to engage in out-of-school physical activity. We hypothesize that school students receiving the teacher-delivered intervention to promote autonomous motivation toward physical activity will exhibit greater participation in physical activities outside of school, relative to students receiving a control intervention.Methods. The trial will adopt a waitlist-control design with cluster-randomization by school. PE teachers assigned to the intervention condition will receive a two-week, 12-hour training program comprising basic information on how to promote out-of-school physical activity and theory-based training on strategies to promote students’ autonomous motivation toward physical activity. Teachers assigned to the waitlist control condition will receive an alternative training on how to monitor physical functional capacity in children with special needs. PE teachers (n = 24) from ten schools will apply the intervention program to students (n = 476) in PE classes for one month. Physical activity participation, the primary outcome variable, and psychological mediators from the trans-contextual model will be measured at pre-trial, post-trial, and at one-, three- and six-months post-trial. We will also assess teachers’ autonomy-supportive techniques and behaviours by observation.Discussion. The study will make a unique contribution to the literature by testing a theory-based intervention delivered by PE teachers to promote school students’ participation in out-of-school physical activity. Information will be useful for educators, community stakeholders and policy makers interested in developing programs to promote students’ out-of-school physical activity.

It seems that educational system in Nigeria has undergone only quantitative improvement in terms of number of schools and students’ enrolment. However, there has been little effort in respect to the capacity to manage them through provisions of adequate financial, human, material and physical resources. Physical and material resources in secondary schools were discovered to be inadequate and poorly equipped. Some of the secondary school buildings were dilapidated, also the allocated financial resource, teaching and non-teaching staff are grossly inadequate compared with the students’ enrolment. The public, the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in education are expressing serious concern about the consistency of the poor performance of secondary school students especially in mathematics. Increase in population and the government’s free education programs make people want to take advantage of the education provided. Provision of both professionally qualified and non-qualified teachers by government and non-state providers of education also appear not to ameliorate the problem of declining performances in mathematics. The effect of all these on the public secondary school student academic performance in mathematics concern the researchers of this study. It is against this background that the study sought to empirically investigates effect of resource factors and quality of instruction on performance in mathematics of Nigeria secondary school students.
