Background: Patients with advanced disease often overestimate their life expectancy, which potentially impacts decision making. Objective: To examine the nature and source of hospice patients’ life expectancy estimates, about which little is known. Design: Using semi-structured interviews, patients were asked to estimate their life expectancy and elaborate on their response. Setting/Subjects: Participants were hospice patients ( n = 20, 55% male; 60% cancer). Measurement: We conducted thematic analysis using open and focused coding. Results: Many participants had difficulty answering the life expectancy question and expressed uncertainty about when they would die. One-third overestimated their length of life relative to actual survival. The most common source of patients’ prognostic beliefs was knowledge about their body, including physical symptoms and change over time. Half of patients reported that a provider had given them a prognostic estimate, and one-third agreed with, or gave estimates consistent with, the provider’s estimate. Some patients said providers do not know prognosis or that time of death was unknowable. Conclusions: Key findings were that 1) many hospice patients had difficulty estimating life expectancy, and 2) hospice patients’ life expectancy estimates were frequently based on their body and not on information from medical providers. These findings have implications for measuring prognostic awareness, as valid assessment is a necessary component of determining whether prognostic awareness is beneficial for patients. Future research should examine how life expectancy estimates are associated with well-being and whether results extend to larger samples of patients with advanced disease not in hospice.

This study was conducted with a purport to evaluate how far religiosity affects household women’s care-giving behaviour towards senior individuals in the family. For this purpose, a random sample of 205 women of Sargodha city was selected from Sargodha City(Pakistan)to study the effect of religiosity on the General Well Being (as a measure of care) of the senior individuals in the family. The findings of the study indicate that mature women (41-50 years old) with moderate span of their married life (11-15years) give more care to the older adults in the family. But, despite that, a great majority of senior individuals in the family are at a state of low wellbeing level. The findings of the study revealed the reason that it was due to lack of religiosity which is strongly positively associated with well-being. Among the other factors, age, span of married life, household income and education correlate with the well-being positively but employment status negatively. Very interestingly, as the findings indicate, the care-giving behaviour is irrespective of the number of carerecipients in the family.

Santrauka. Key words: grandparents, child care, well-being, multiple roles.ABSTRACTGRANDPARENTS’ CHILDCARE SUPPORT IN LITHUANIA: PREDICTORS AND CONSEQUENCES FOR WELL-BEINGUsing theories of intergenerational solidarity and conflict, and data from the Demographic Research Institute’s 2009 survey, ‘Gender and Generations’, this article analyses childcare support provided by grandparents in Lithuania. The survey results revealed that the most active grandparents are aged between 50 and 65, and that half of those grandparents participating in childcare also have a job. The most important factors determining grandparents’ participation in childcare are gender, marital status, subjective health and whether grandparents and grandchildren live together or separately. To assess the connection between grandparents’ well-being and their role in childcare, the Demographic Research Institute’s well-being index, linked to demographic processes, was employed. The results show that childcare provision is related only to some aspects of grandparents’ well-being; this article discusses the distribution of various aspects of wellbeing by the provision or non-provision of childcare and by other crucial predictors: the age, gender and employment status of grandparents.

SummaryThis paper reviews explanations of sex differences in mental hospital admission rates, taking account of age and marital status effects. Six propositions derived from the review are tested on data from a nationwide community survey of 259 respondents, using a standardized symptom check list.Women report more psychological symptoms than men, but this is unrelated to marital status. It is suggested that being married acts to keep a potential patient out of hospital rather than to reduce symptoms. Whether or not a woman is in paid employment outside the home is a major predictor of symptom levels, especially in depression. Women with unemployed husbands are also particularly likely to report high levels of depression. However, there is no reciprocal effect of wives' employment status on the psychological well-being of their husbands.

Depression amongst the elderly population is a worldwide public health problem, especially in China. Affected by the urban–rural dual structure, depressive symptoms of the elderly in urban and rural areas are significantly different. In order to compare depressive symptoms and its influencing factors among the elderly in urban and rural areas, we used the data from the fourth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 7690 participants at age 60 or older were included in this study. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the prevalence estimate of depression between urban and rural elderly (χ2 = 10.9.76, p < 0.001). The prevalence of depression among rural elderly was significantly higher than that of urban elderly (OR-unadjusted = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.67 to 2.12). After adjusting for gender, age, marital status, education level, minorities, religious belief, self-reported health, duration of sleep, life satisfaction, chronic disease, social activities and having income or not, the prevalence of depression in rural elderly is 1.52 times (OR = 1.52, 95% CI: 1.32 to 1.76) than that of urban elderly. Gender, education level, self-reported health, duration of sleep, chronic diseases were associated with depression in both urban and rural areas. In addition, social activities were connected with depression in urban areas, while minorities, marital status and having income or not were influencing factors of depression among the rural elderly. The interaction analysis showed that the interaction between marital status, social activities and urban and rural sources was statistically significant (divorced: coefficient was 1.567, p < 0.05; social activities: coefficient was 0.340, p < 0.05), while gender, education level, minorities, self-reported health, duration of sleep, life satisfaction, chronic disease, social activities having income or not and urban and rural sources have no interaction (p > 0.05). Thus, it is necessary to propose targeted and precise intervention strategies to prevent depression after accurately identifying the factors’ effects.

The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of an interdisciplinary and intergenerational educational experience in the elderly, in teachers, students and their parents or guardians. Creative Dance and Drama Workshops were articulated with Portuguese, PE, Arts and IT subjects. A total of 20 6th graders, their parents or guardians, five teachers and 15 elders participated in the study. An analysis of 194 free evocations based in the free word association technique was performed, along with 17 semi-structured interviews. From the literary texts “Os Piratas” and “Ulisses”, an expressions-based work was proposed, where drama and movement games were explored. Evocations of the central core were of Friendship, Learning, Affection, Solidarity and Interaction. Of the 264 text units analysed, interaction with the elders was highlighted. In the teachers’ perception about the subjects and workshops involved in the project, a valorisation of IT and of Portuguese was registered. It is also relevant the amount of references to values and to the Interaction with the elders. This interdisciplinary and intergenerational project has revealed itself valuable for the integral and humanistic training of the students, having also given rise to corporeal artistic and emotional experiences relevant to their well-being. Keywords: Interdisciplinarity; Intergenerationality; Basic Education.

The research participants were people aged 60-79. The research shows that higher employment status contributes to their psychological well-being, primarily to positive interaction with others and their ability to master the environment. The research has proved that higher education and confidence in financial well-being of employed people reduces the intensity of asthenic emotions, while in those unemployed it increases the intensity of asthenic emotions. The employed are more self-confident, their self-confidence contributes to their psychological well-being. Self-confidence of the unemployed people while enhancing psychological well-being at the same time increases sthenic emotions. It is shown that reticence as self-attitude modality plays a greater role in the personality structure of the elderly people who are unemployed. The conclusions are made on weak and strong points of employment in late adulthood
