This study aimed at; 1) exploring the process of intercultural communication in a multiculturalism family in Namlea; 2) investigating the functions of intercultural communication in a multiculturalism family; 3) knowing the multiculturalism family developing their intercultural competence. This research applied the qualitative research using a case study design. The informant of the research consisted of a multiculturalism family in Jikubesar of Buru Regency, Maluku. The data collection technique employed the observation, interview, field notes, and documentation. The technique of data analysis was data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results show that the adjusting and understanding others culture were the key of the success of the intercultural process in a multicultural family through some functions and strategies in developing the intercultural communication competence. The results of the study contributed to develop the communication model in the multicultural society such in the environment interaction. It also could be adapted as a strategy or model of teaching and learning a language in the multicultural classroom.Keywords: Intercultural communication, multicultural competence

The aims of this research were identify: 1) The types of code switching, 2) Find out the factors influence the teachers to switch English into Indonesian or the opposite, 3) Analyze the impact of teacher’s code switching for the students. This research was held on SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The research design was qualitative research especially case study. Research used observation and interview as the data collection technique in this research. To analyze the data the writer transcribing interviewing, scanning material, typing up field notes, coding process, making qualitative narrative, and making interpretation the data. Based on finding, the types of code switching which was used by English teacher at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo include tag code switching, inter sentential code switching, and intra sentential code switching with different quantities. The factor influence teachers to conducted switch English to Indonesian such as the students understanding was the big factor and the students characteristic were different, they had not same ability in English. Finally, the researcher proposed suggestion to the teachers to maintain using code switching during teaching and learning English in classroom, but continue to prioritize English as the primary. They could switch Bahasa Indonesia, but when used for certain purposes only.

The purpose of this study was to analyze intercultural communication between Japanese and Indonesian employees at PT. Tokyu Land Indonesia. This research was also to analyze barriers which occurred in intercultural communication between them, and how to overcome these barriers. The method used in this study was a qualitative research method with a case study approach. Data collection was carried out by using an in-depth interview with 3 Japanese and 3 Indonesian employees, observation, and relevant previous research articles, and research-related documents. This research used the intercultural communication model of William B. Gudykunst and Young Yun Kim, intercultural communication concepts from Edward T. Hall, such as proxemics (the concept of distance), chronemics (the concept of time), high context and low context communication, individualism and collectivism, stereotypes. The results of the study showed that intercultural communication between Japanese and Indonesian employees at PT. Tokyu Land Indonesia is relatively good. Obstacles that occurred in intercultural communication are due to problems of differences and understanding of language, habits, respect for time (Japanese monochronic while Indonesia is polychronic), and the existence of stereotypes from each nation. To overcome these obstacles, they have to learn more about Japanese culture for Indonesian employees, and Indonesian culture for Japanese employees, openness to confirm understanding of the message delivered, mutual respect, and forgiveness each other if a misunderstanding occurs.

The research aimed to examine (1) the anxiety experienced by Pattani Students when they first mingled with Kembangarum residents, (2) the anxiety management used by Pattani Students, (3) the model of intercultural communication between Pattani students and Kembangarum residents. The type of the research used in this study is a case study. While the approach was qualitative approach. Data collection techniques used were in-depth interviews and participatory observation. The subject of the study is Pattani students and Kembangarum residents. The findings showed there was a cultural shock experienced by Pattani students when they first lived in Kembangarum. The cultural shock resulted in anxiety and uncertainty when they communicate with the locals. To overcome this anxiety, Pattani students used Gudykunst’s three anxiety management, those are the self-concept, motivation and, reaction to the locals. The communication model used by Pattani students was intercultural approaches by prioritizing dialectics and interpretation of community behavior.

This case study is set in the context of an extraordinarily rapid influx of interactive whiteboards in schools in the UK. The focus is on pedagogical strategies used to harness the functionality of this powerful technology to support teaching and learning in science. The study offers a vivid example of how one expert secondary teacher used the IWB technology and other digital resources to support “active learning” about the process of photosynthesis by a class of students aged 14-15. Collaborative thematic analysis of digital video recordings, teacher diary, field notes and post-lesson interview data from a sequence of six lessons yielded detailed, theorized descriptions of the teacher’s own rationale. The chapter concludes by highlighting a multimedia resource produced as an outcome of this case study in order to support professional development of practitioners working in other contexts.

In the field of intercultural business and technical communication, intercultural communication has been a regular topic in curriculum for decades; various teaching approaches exist for developing students’ cultural awareness and helping them achieve a theoretical understanding about the concept of culture, cultural differences, and cultural conflict. But quite often teaching and learning are limited in the classroom context, although it is true that study abroad programs are available for a small group of students. As a result, students do not have enough opportunities to interact with members of other cultures, which limits students’ potentials for gaining intercultural competence. This study explores the rhetorical nature of simulations, defines the perspective of using activity theory as a framework to understand the learning process occurring in simulations, and provides an intercultural simulation example to explain how instructors can incorporate simulations into the business and technical communication curriculum.

Abstract The aim of this article is to highlight theoretical and practical considerations in design of an intercultural communication course. The first part of the article considers intercultural competence, and uses Bourdieu’s notions of education to frame the design of an intercultural communication course. This is followed by discussion of general principles of intercultural course design; the concepts of backward design and constructive alignment as they relate to an intercultural communication course; and finally, the importance of including active and collaborative learning/teaching activities within course design. The remainder of the article draws on a case study of an existing Australian undergraduate course in intercultural communication to highlight how this course may be redesigned in line with the pedagogical principles discussed in the first part of the article.

<p><em>The objective of the research is to find out how the intercultural communication competence possessed by the students of Sultan Iskandar Muda High School Medan. Through qualitative approach by applying case study method, the problem in this research will be answered by using an intercultural communication competence model developed by Chen and Starosta which consists of three components: affective, cognitive, and behavioral. The results of the study shows that the research subjects in general have had intercultural communication competence especially on elements: cultural knowledge, self-concept, open-mindedness, nonjudgmental, social relaxation, interaction management, and social skills.</em><em></em></p><em>Keywords: intercultural communication competence, students, Sultan Iskandar Muda High School</em>

In the context of globalization, intercultural integration has gained a better position in teaching and learning English in Vietnam, even in general education. In fact, intercultural objectives and intercultural content have been added to the expected curriculum and pilot coursebooks for teaching English in upper secondary education. Prior to the implementation of the new curriculum, it is essential to explore how teachers deal with intercultural content provided in the coursebooks. From the view of intercultural teaching, this study focuses on the positionality of intercultural objectives and intercultural teaching strategies in teachers’ practice. Data collected from 101 teachers through questionnaire and six class observations illustrate that (1) teachers did not include intercultural objectives in EFL lessons and (2) they rarely conducted intercultural language activities in their teaching practice. It is recommended that intercultural education needs more attention from educational managers to support the EFL teachers in upper secondary schools to incorporate culture into their teaching more effectively, which contributes to the accomplishment of a reformed English curriculum objective – building comprehensive intercultural competence for the students.

Coronaviruse Disease 2019 (Covid-19) makes teaching and learning to be carried out remotely, to protect the safety and health of students from the threat of Covid-19. MIN 1 Rembang as an institution under the Ministry of Religion utilizes a distance learning application launched by the Ministry of Religion, namely Madrasah E-learning. This study aims to describe Distance Learning using Madrasah E-Learning for MIN 1 Rembang students. This study used a qualitative research method with a descriptive qualitative design (case study). The data collection technique used an online questionnaire using Microsoft Form. The results showed that the Madrasah E-learning application proved to be useful as a learning technique during the 2019 Coronavirus Disease Pandemic (Covid-19). This can be seen from the results of the questionnaire given to respondents on average showing that Madrasah E-Learning can be the main means and choice for the implementation of teaching and learning activities for MIN 1 Rembang students during the current Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
