The purpose of this research was to study the antioxidant activity from ethanol extract of horstail (Equisetum debile L.) in the free radical scavenging in mice blood plasma. The antioxidant activity test was conducted with the DPPH method and measuring the MDA concentration in mice blood. The antioxidant activity test with the DPPH results showed that the ethanol extract of horstail (Equisetum debile L.) had the antioxidant activity of IC50 which was 1.604 mg/mL or 1,604 ppm. The statistical analysis result of the MDA blood plasma in mice with various doses (125 mg/kgBM, 250 mg/kgBM, 375 mg/kgBM and 500 mg/kgBM) showed that the 500 mg/kgBM dose extract was able to reduce the MDA concentration in mice blood which given the most amount of exercise.

Cana plants are flower ornamental plants whose genus or margins are the only ones in the family Cannacea. This study aims to determine the activity of antioxidant compounds from ethanol extract of  Canna coccinea  Mill flower. by using the DPPH method. Flowers Canna coccinea  Mill  extracted using maceration with ethanol as a solvent. As a parameter, testing of antioxidant activity was carried out using the DPPH (1,1 – diphenyl-2-pikrilhidrazil) method which was measured using UV-Vis Spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 517nm. The result showed that ethanol of Canna coccinea Mill,flower proven to have antioxidant activity in each concentration test. The highest concentration has an free radical scavenging activity by reaching of 56,00%.Keywords: Flowers Canna coccinea Mill, Antioxidant, Extraction, DPPH ABSTRAKTanaman kana adalah tanaman hias bunga yang genus atau marganya merupakan satu-satunya dalam family Cannaceae. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui aktivitas senyawa antioksidan dari ekstrak etanol bunga Canna coccinea Mill. dengan menggunakan metode DPPH. Bunga Canna coccinea Mill. diekstraksi menggunakan metode maserasi dengan etanol sebagai pelarut. Sebagai parameter, pengujian aktivitas antioksidan dilakukan dengan metode DPPH (1,1-difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil) yang diukur menggunakan Spektrofotometri UV-Vis pada panjang gelombang 517 nm. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ekstrak etanol bunga Canna coccinea Mill. terbukti memiliki aktivitas antioksidan disetiap konsentrasi pengujian. Konsentrasi tertinggi memiliki aktivitas penangkal radikal bebas dengan mencapai presentase 56,00%.Kata Kunci : Bunga Canna coccinea Mill, Antioksidan, Ekstraksi, DPPH

Objective: Four different extracts of Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus (flowers) were screened for their phytochemical composition, and free radical scavenging activities.Methods: DPPH method was used to test the antioxidant activity for extracts.Results: Among the different extracts tested, the methanol extract of both the plant species showed significant radical scavenging activities. Phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed that the radical scavenging activities might be due to the presence of flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds.Conclusion: The results obtained suggest that Araucaria columnaris (bark peel) and Cosmos sulphureus(flowers) could be exploited in the treatment of various diseases like cancer, cardiovascular diseases and infection diseases.

Free radicals are molecules containing unpaired electrons so that they are not stable and very reactive to other molecules. ROS/RNS radicals have physiological function, but the overproduction of free radicals can initiate oxidative/nitrosative stress that contributes to a high number of diseases. Body has an ability to neutralize the free radicals by forming the endogenous antioxidant. Environmental changes, living style, certain pathological conditions can cause the shift of prooxidant-antioxidant equilibrium. Thus, endogenous antioxidant intake is needed, particularly that originating from natural materials. One of the plants believed to have antioxidant activity is sesewanua (Clerodendrum fragrans [Vent.] Willd.) leaf. This study was aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of ethanol extract, hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction of the sesewanua leaf using DPPH and nitrate-oxide free radical scavenging method. The study is a laboratory experiment. The sample was sesewanua (Clerodendrum fragrans) obtained from East Malalayang I village, Malalayang district, Manado city, North Sulawesi. The antioxidant activity testing utilized 1,1-Diphenyl-2-Picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and nitrate-oxide free radical scavenging method. Data included percent inhibition of free radicals and were analyzed using linear regression to determine 50% inhibition concentration (IC50) of DPPH and nitrate-oxide free radicals. As conclusion, the ethanol extract, hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction of the sesewanua leaf had antioxidant activity through DPPH free antiradical activity, but not active as antiradical NO.

CHARACTERIZATION OF GOLD NANOPARTICLES FROM CLOVE FLOWER WATER EXTRACT AND ITS ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY. Green chemistry is a safe and cost effective method for producing metal nanoparticles, characterize and tested the antioxidant activity of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). In this research gold nanoparticles were synthesized using HAuCl₄ as the gold precursor and water extract of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) flowers 0.5% as the bioreductor. Characterization of the gold nanoparticles was carried out using UV-Vis spectrophotometer to measure the maximum wavelength, zeta analyzer to determine the particle size, and SEM EDS to investigate the morphology and content of the gold nanoparticles. The antioxidant activity was determined by measuring its free radical scavenging activity using the DPPH method. The research found the AuNPs has a maximum wavelength at 533 nm, and particle size of 73.52 nm. Furthermore, the AuNPs show free radical scavenging activities of up to 70%.

The free radical is an unstable molecule because contains one or two unpaired electrons. The antioxidant substance is a simple way to decrease the illness caused by free radicals. Cawat hanoman (Bauhinia aculeata L.) was known to contain tannin components one of the benefits as an antioxidant. This research aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the B. aculeata stem tested by qualitatively used thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and quantitatively using the DPPH method. Bauhinia aculeata stem was extracted using a maceration extract method with 96% ethanol. Antioxidant activity test was done qualitatively by eluent of ethyl acetate : methanol : purified water (6 : 2 : 1) using TLC and quantitatively using the DPPH method. The result of antioxidant activity from 96% ethanol extract of B. aculeata stem qualitatively showed the presence of yellow spots on a purple background at TLC after syringed DPPH 0.5 mM and quantitative test that resulted in an IC50 of 21.862 �g/mL. These results indicate that 96% ethanol extract of B. aculeata has very strong antioxidant activity.

Aims: To determine and compare the antioxidant activity of water and ethanol extract of 25 kinds of traditional chinese medicinal plants. Results: The ethanol extract of 4 kinds of medicinal herbs had the strongest scavenging activity. They were Magnolia officinalis, Rheum officinale, Psoralea corylifolia and Radix Bupleuri. In addtion, Rheum laciniatum, Chrysanthemum morifolium, Magnolia officinalis and Salvia miltiorrhiza had the strongest scavenging activity of their water extract. On the basis of the above comparison, we evaluated EC50 and total phenolic content of their ethanol extract. The EC50 of  Magnolia officinalis, Rheum officinale, Psoralea corylifolia and Radix Bupleuri were 2.75mg·mL-1, 11.82mg·mL-1, 25.22mg·mL-1and 42.67mg·mL-1. The total phenlic content of them were 4.80μg·L-1 , 1.19μg·L-1, 1.07μg·L-1 and 0.75μg·L-1, respectively. Conclusion: The results showed the correlation between the antioxidant activity and the total phenol content. Furthermore, the reaction time of the DPPH test affected the free radical scavenging, which reflected the difference of the extract component would impact the test method.

Abstract Background Synthetic antioxidants have toxigenic effects, there is therefore growing interest in substituting them with natural antioxidants. Attention is being focused on extracting them from agricultural industry residuals to minimize costs. Legume seed hulls could be cheap sources of such natural antioxidants. Objective This study aims to unravel potential free radical scavenging activity, antioxidant activity, and total phenolic and flavonoid contents of some legumes’ hulls extracted by different solvents and evaluate their efficacy to enhance sunflower oil stability. Method Legume hulls extracted by different solvents were evaluated for their antioxidant activity coefficient (AAC), free radical scavenging activity [by 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)], and phenolic and flavonoids contents. The protection factor and induction periods (rancimat test) of the highest activity extracts were evaluated. Results Sunflower seed hull ethyl acetate extract, lupine seed hull ethanol extract, and mung bean hull petroleum ether extract exhibited stronger DPPH scavenging activity, AAC, and protection factor values than other solvents. Ethyl acetate extracts of sunflower seed hulls showed an antioxidant and scavenging activity close (P>0.05) to that detected for α-tocopherol. Conclusions Legume hulls may possess strong free radical scavenging and antioxidant activity. The analogous effect between sunflower hull extract and α-tocopherol make it a potential, cheaper substitute of α-tocopherol in food systems. Highlights The analogous effect between sunflower hull extract and α-tocopherol give it the potency to allow substitution at a concentration of 0.5% of sunflower hull ethyl acetate or 1% of lupine hull ethanol extract instead of 0.5% α-tocopherol to enhance induction periods and protection factors of sunflower oil.

Development of medical plants as an alternative treatment needs support in terms of scientific evidence to increase public confidence in its efficacy and to ensure the safety of its use. Recent research on Andrographis paniculata (Burm.f) Ness dan Gynura procumbens (Lour.) Merr show that the combination of these two extracts has a potential to be developed into antihyperglycemic agent, through the mechanism of action as an antioxidant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant effect of these two extracts combination. Extraction was done by maceration method. Testing of free radical capture activity was carried out by the DPPH method. The results of the antioxidant activity test showed that the combination of soluble ethanol extract of A. paniculata herbs and G. procumbens leaves 50:50 had the best IC50 value of 91.418 µg/mL, the combination of soluble ethanol extract 75:25 had IC50 value 117,059 µg/mL, and the combination combination of soluble ethanol extract 25:75 had the weakest IC50 of 142,277 µg/mL. The three comparisons of the combination were weaker in antioxidant activity compared to the standard vitamin C which had IC50 3,546 µg/mL. Statistical analysis using one-way ANOVA obtained significant differences in antioxidant activity of the three comparison groups.

Kulit durian merupakan bagian tanaman yang pernah diteliti sebelumnya dan mempunyai aktivitas farmakologi sebagai antioksidan. Kulit durian mengandung metabolit sekunder yaitu flavonoid, tanin dan alkaloid. Kulit durian diekstrak menggunakan pelarut etanol 70% dengan metode sokletasi.  Pengujian aktivitas antioksidan menggunakan metode pengukuran penangkapan radikal bebas oleh 1,1-difenil-2-pikrilhidrazil (DPPH). Vitamin C digunakan sebagai kontrol positif dengan nilai IC50 5,63 ppm dan ekstrak etanol sebesar 204,33 ppm. Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol kulit durian tidak memiliki aktivitas antioksidan menggunakan metode DPPH. Kata Kunci: Durian, Sokletasi, DPPH (2,2-difenil-1-pikrilhidrazil), antioksidan, IC50  Durian fruit peels (Durion zibethinus Murr.) have  been studied previously and reported to have phramacological activity that has the potential to be antioxidant. The durian fruits peels, contained secondary metabolite, namely flavonoids, tannin and alkaloid. Durian fruit peels (Durion zibethinus Murr.) were extracted with ethanol 70% with soxletation method. The antioxidant activity of extracts were evaluated by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity assay. Vitamin C was used as standard with IC50 5,63 ppm and the ethanol eztracts showed IC50 204,33 ppm. This study provided that Durian fruit peels (Durion zibethinus Murr.) cannot inhibit free radical usimg the DPPH method.

In present study, free radical scavenging activity of methanolic extract of all parts (leaves, seeds, root, stem and flower) of Perilla frutescens L. has been estimated. The promising results, among the five plant parts leaves, seeds, root, stem, flower and the standard tested for the in vitro antioxidant activity using the DPPH method, the crude methanolic extracts of all parts showed antioxidant activity, with IC50 values of 5.95 ± 0.10, 8.28 ± 0.20, 66.27 ± 0.17, 80.03 ± 0.10 and 122.35 ± 0.17 μg/mL, respectively. The IC50 value for ascorbic acid was 5.19 ± 0.26 μg/mL. While butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT) a synthetic commercial antioxidant has comparatively high IC50 value of 108.46 ± 0.57 μg/mL. Presence of zinc in all parts of plant in the range 17.20 ± 0.22 to 33.56 ± 0.32 ppm further supports the strong antioxidant activity of Perilla frutescens L. The phytochemical tests indicated that all parts of Perilla frutescens L. have considerable proportion of important phytochemicals and are in rich source of secondary metabolites like polyphenols, tannins, alkaloids and flavonoids. Several of such compounds are known to possess potent antioxidant activity.
