Fuzzy logic, which was invented in 1960’s, in response to emerging needs to deal with complex techno-social concepts, is becoming more and more relevant to today’s problems. Nowadays, fuzzy logic should not only become a part of the engineering curriculum but also a part of the engineering education standards. For example a fuzzy approach can be used in evaluating graduate attributes (GAs). Most graduate attributes are fuzzy and need to be evaluated using a fuzzy logic methodology.The present paper is an attempt to introduce fuzzy tools (such as fuzzy sets and fuzzy linguistic value systems) to provide a metric for defining and evaluating graduate attributes. Proper definition and scaling of fuzzy attributes can provide a common language, through which educators, industry, and regulators can communicate and collaborate more effectively in the process of assigning jobs to engineers with attributes which best fit the task. Also, by using a fuzzy method, the uncertainty of attributes is neither magnified nor dampened in the analytical process (contrary to most conventional approaches).A properly defined fuzzy metric for GAs can provide flexibility in the implementation of the system, while reducing the overall errors in evaluation. Graduate attributes are proposed to be divided into three major classes or spaces (i.e. knowledge, social and ethical), each consisting of a number of fuzzy attributes and sub-attributes, which can be summed up with appropriate weighting factors. A neural network engine can be used to find the optimal weighting factors.

Different epidemiological compartmental models have been presented to predict the transmission dynamics of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this study, we have proposed a fuzzy rule-based Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious-Recovered-Death ([Formula: see text]) compartmental model considering a new dynamic transmission possibility variable as a function of time and three different fuzzy linguistic intervention variables to delineate the intervention and transmission heterogeneity on SARS-CoV-2 viral infection. We have analyzed the datasets of active cases and total death cases of China and Bangladesh. Using our model, we have predicted active cases and total death cases for China and Bangladesh. We further presented the correspondence of different intervention measures in relaxing the transmission possibility. The proposed model delineates the correspondence between the intervention measures as fuzzy subsets and the predicted active cases and total death cases. The prediction made by our system fitted the collected dataset very well while considering different fuzzy intervention measures. The integration of fuzzy logic in the classical compartmental model also produces more realistic results as it generates a dynamic transmission possibility variable. The proposed model could be used to control the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 as it deals with the intervention and transmission heterogeneity on SARS-CoV-2 transmission dynamics.

Engineering education all over the world is of paramount importance as it is this education which provides economies with opportunities for development and growth. Engineering education is important for both developed and developing economies—for the former to maintain their lead position and for the latter to ensure decent livelihood and utilization of natural resources. In such a situation, engineering education needs to continuously upgrade itself to meet the ever changing needs of the economy, society, and mankind. Hence, understanding engineering education and reviewing the methods and standards are important if all stakeholders have to be satisfied. With the driving force of the globalization of the engineering profession, adopting project-based teaching methods have mutual recognition across the world, and also help to develop the right graduate attributes while continuing to assure the standards and quality of engineering education.

The concept of utility is used as a decision tool for consumers to choose a commodity. Analyzing consumer behavior is complicated due to the qualitative nature of the utility. Hence, this paper investigates a quantitative method to evaluate the utility of consumers. The methodology is based on linguistic expressions of fuzzy logic. Initially, the authors identify different parameters being effective on utility of a consumer. Then, using fuzzy linguistic expressions the quantitative value of utility are determined. Also some statistical analyses are set to investigate the effective parameters on the utility. Consequently, the optimization is done applying mathematical nonlinear programming. Some analysis is performed as sensitivity study. A case study is conducted to verify the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed methodology.

Abstract – To help fulfill the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board’s new requirements, many institutions are creating positions focused on graduate attributes and the continual improvement process (GACIP). Due to the very recent development of this role, people hired as graduate attribute professionals (GAPs) have no established community in which to network and develop.  In addition, the very nature of these positions is not well defined. This paper describes the development of the Graduate Attribute Professional Network, an informal community of people whose jobs are focused on GACIP, and the results of a survey conducted with its members. GAPs are found to generally be highly educated people, usually with an engineering background, many of whom have experience as educators. They tend to be new to their roles, to be spending 50% or less of full-time hours on GACIP-related duties, and to be involved in every aspect of graduate attribute assessment and the continual improvement process. GAPNet is an important resource to support these individuals who are so involved in engineering education and accreditation in Canada.

Engineering schools are integrating entrepreneurship within their curriculum in order to equip their students with the capacity to adapt quickly to technological innovation. The University of Ottawa has developed an entrepreneurship course that is open to all engineering students, and aims to provide them with a hands-on approach to starting and growing a technology start-up. This paper is centred on assessing the students who took this course. The results of the survey analyze the impact entrepreneurship has had on their engineering skillset. This skillset reflects the graduate attributes that the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB) expects engineering students to develop. We will observe whether this impact has changed since the inception of this course in 2012 and throughout 5 course cycles. Using the survey results as well as the direct observation during those semesters, we present our analysis on how these outcomes can be replicated in other environments.

Under ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ numerous IEC campaigns have launched with multiple media vehicles to achieve an aim of maximizing the awareness level and triggering the mass to adapt behavioral change. Media optimization is a challenging process due to budgetary constraints and multiple media vehicles, but it leads to radical shift in the expenditures as well as in the outcomes. This research study follows two-phase procedure to identify the optimal media mix for IEC Campaigns under ‘Swachh Bharat by applying AHP (Analytical hierarchical process) followed by Fuzzy linguistic genetic algorithms to identify the top 5 media vehicle for IEC campaigns further followed by Fuzzy linguistic genetic algorithms in second phase find the best fit of media insertions with least cost. Both the methods are used in order to find a best fit of cost effective media for promoting the National cleanliness drive ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’. This study is helpful for the stakeholders and decision-makers to plan the IEC campaigns effectively and efficiently.
