Al-Qarawiyyin University's independence in terms of finances had been a significant and influential factor in making it possible for the university to maintain its high quality. Therefore, this paper aims to examine and analyse the financial sources for the development and operation of this university. It reviews and analyses historical data through relevant literature and documents. Waqf played a significant role in providing financial assistance to the university's communities and in strengthening its academic quality. There were four significant types of waqf sources which were the individual fund, the collective waqf fund, the Sultan fund and the alumni fund along with different other types of charities, i.e. sadaqah. This article adds new knowledge by examining the financing experiences of the world's oldest university. It is expected that the instance of Al-Qarawiyyin University may contribute to finding out a solution for the funding crises in contemporary institutions. This review is hoped to constitute a significant contribution to scholarship in general and act as a suggestion for solving the contemporary funding crisis of higher educational institutions. Keywords: Al-Qarawiyyin University, financing higher education, Morocco, Waqf. Cite as: Hoque, M. This article is written from the perspective of a faculty member in a professional graduate degree program who is committed to internationalization, but also notes its challenges given the context in which higher education finds itself. First, the article outlines the ways in which higher education is thinking about internationalization, in particular with a focus on faculty-led short-term study abroad programs. Second, the article juxtaposes internationalization with the current conversation and debates about academic capitalism. Finally, it ends with overarching topics that deserve further exploration and include: (a) that internationalization is often tailored to faculty interests but that this might make systemic assessment challenging; (b) that there are shifting relations among the university central offices related to internationalization processes and academic departments; and (c) given the academic capitalism debates, the article asks whether we can implement and assess our internationalization processes while still adhering to academic quality and credibility.

AbstractIn the context of competition in higher education environment the university type of public institution ensures high quality, accessible, challenging university and research programs, expertise services based on a strong motivation, commitment and professional attitude from the teaching body and students. National documents promoted by ARACIS show that “The internal dimension of academic quality is built based on the legislation in force and according to the specific of each university, its tradition and cultural heritage. It is fully under the responsibility of each university. In this approach, quality assurance becomes a process adapted to the existing institutional specific and it is instituted as a mechanism through which academic results or performances are constantly improved”. Communication quality management is integrant part of the institutional quality management system and to this extent the formulation of general criteria, quality indicators and standards is considered so that emphasis is placed not only on the organization’s conformation to a set of predefined or predetermined quantitative and qualitative conditions but also on the deliberate, voluntary and proactive commitment of the institution for accomplishing certain performances that can be proved by effective results. Within the presented paper, in considering the importance of communication for all process participants, we have identified and defined a series of qualitative indicators which, through content and structure, hold a certain weight in communication quality management implementation in the organization. In formulating the communication strategies, in designing the informational system of a public institution in general and of the university type of public institution these groups and subgroups of indicators, which represent the quintessence of the apprehensions, believes related to sending the information formulated by the stakeholders and actors of the communicational field from all structures of an academic institution, are suggested.

This paper analyzes the discourse of academic quality audit reports by drawing upon Appraisal Theory (Martin & White 2005). It focuses on the evaluative prosodies in the discourse leading up to the three main components of the reports, namely commendations, affirmations, and recommendations. These reports are prepared by the audit panels formed by the Quality Assurance Council of the University Grants Committee of Hong Kong upon the completion of academic quality audit visits to each of the city’s eight publicly-funded tertiary institutions. This paper argues that such evaluative prosodies, or the pattern of use of evaluative language, are strategically employed by the audit panels in an attempt to strike a balance between three needs: (1) to discharge their quality assurance responsibilities with their power vested by the Hong Kong Government through the University Grants Committee; (2) to maintain and/or reinforce a credible ethos for the panels themselves; and (3) to attend to the face wants of the institutions and the stakeholders concerned.

This study explores the mechanism by which mobility influences university entrepreneurship through an empirical analysis of Japanese scientists working for the University of Tokyo. It presents theory-driven typology of mobility and applies it to the knowledge-transfer context. First, this paper subdivides previously-studied mobility into four types – job mobility (JM), sector mobility (SM), international mobility (IM), and the educational background mobility (EBM). Then, it empirically shows that both JM and IM have positive and significant correlation with university entrepreneurship, whereas neither SM nor EBM does. Based on the result, this study discusses that JM and IM accelerate the formation of skills necessary for the commercialization of university research; however, SM and EBM may have no impact on it.

PurposeThe aim of this research is to assess the influence of the underlying service quality variable, usually related to university students' perception of the educational experience. Another aspect analysed in this work is the development of a procedure to determine which variables are more significant to assess students' satisfaction.Design/methodology/approachIn order to achieve both goals, a twofold methodology was approached. In the first phase of research, an assessment of the service quality was performed with data gathered from 580 students in a process involving the adaptation of the SERVQUAL scale through a multi-objective optimization methodology. In the second phase of research, results obtained from students were compared with those obtained from the teaching staff at the university.FindingsResults from the analysis revealed the most significant service quality dimensions from the students' viewpoint according to the scores that they provided. Comparison of the results with the teaching staff showed noticeable differences when assessing academic quality.Originality/valueSignificant conclusions can be drawn from the theoretical review of the empirical evidences obtained through this study helping with the practical design and implementation of quality strategies in higher education especially in regard to university education.
