Brown planthopper (BPH) is a major pest on rice plants that can cause hopperburn and crop failure. The study aimed to determine the level of BPH attack on several local rice varieties in the Pasaman Regency. This research was conducted in a greenhouse, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Andalas, using a completely randomized design (CRD), with five treatments and five replications. The treatments were four different rice varieties from Pasaman and control (Siganteng, Pulau Batu, Mundam Kuning, Mundam Putih, IR 42). BPH was infested when the rice was five days after sowing. Observation parameters were the percentage and the intensity of the attacks. Observations were done until 15 days after infestation; after the IR 42 variety died 90%. The results showed that the attack rate of BPH on rice varieties from Pasaman was moderate. The lowest percentage of attack occurred in the Mundam Putih variety (94%), while the intensity of the attack was not significantly different from other varieties.

Beauveria bassiana fungi and neem extract as botanical insecticide can be combined to get the synergizing effect to control brown planthopper (BPH). This study was conducted to determine the best combination between the spore density of B. bassiana and concentration of neem extract to control BPH effectively. The two factorial treatment consisted concentration of B. bassiana (106  Colony Forming Unit (CFU) and 107 CFU) and concentration of neem extract (5%, 10%, 15%), and control.  The treatments were assigned in Completely Randomized Design with three replications. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and  LSD at 5%. The test was conducted in vitro and bio assay of testing insects, BPH, was conducted using dipping method.  B. bassiana was suitable with neem extract with T value ranged from 78.58- 90.38. The mortality of BPH occurred on day 5 after application. The highest mortality (91.67%) occurred on the treatment with B. bassiana 107 CFU + neem extract 10%. The shortest LT50 was found at the treatment of B. bassiana 106 CFU+  neem extract 15%  (2.74 days) but not significantly different from B. bassiana 107 CFU + neem extract 15% (2.76 days). B. bassiana spores combined with neem extract are assumed to speed up the mortality of BPH by increasing the concentration.

AbstractThe feeding responses, growth and population development of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) are quantified on a range of twelve susceptible or resistant host-plants. Paris of rice varieties carrying the Bph1, bph2 and Bph3 resistance genes are compared as hosts for N. lugens, and it is concluded that such notations do not adequately describe the diversity of plant resistance mechanisms. Evidence is presented for resistance mechanisms involving enhanced insect activity and gustatory responses to unacceptable phloem.

The decrease in rice production can be caused by pests that can damage the quality and quantity. Pests that always attack rice plants are Brown planthopper. The BPH causes several effects, namely hopperburn, as a virus vector and can cause crop failure. The control of BPHs by farmers to date is by using synthetic pesticides. The use of synthetic pesticides can cause residues, resistance, resurgence, and the destruction of natural enemies. The use of synthetic insecticides can be minimized by using environmentally friendly and sustainable control alternatives, namely by using the local entomopathogenic fungi B. bassiana. This study aims to determine the effect of the application of local Riau B. bassiana on BPH and rice production.The research was conducted at the Laboratory of Plant Pests and Experimental Gardens, Faculty of Agriculture, Riau University from April to July 2020. The research was designed a completely randomized design with five treatments local entomopathogenic fungi concentrations B. bassiana 0 g.l-1 water, 10 g.l-1 water, 20 g.l-1 water, 30 g.l-1 water, 40 g.l-1 water and four replications, in order to obtain 20 experimental units. The results showed that application of Riau local B. bassiana with a concentration of 40 g.l-1 for six days was able to cause the highest mortality of 92.5%. The higher the concentration of Riau local B. bassiana, the lower the attack intensity. The attack of brown planthopper nymphs affects the quality of rice production, but did not affect the quantity of rice production.

Brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens Stal. (Hemiptera: Delphacidae), is an important pest of rice. This pest can cause hopperburn and field failure. This research aimed to determine the effects of population density and host availability on migration of N. lugens. The criteria used to justify the effects of host availability and population density on migration of N. lugens were based the hardness and tannin tests of the rice stems, fecundity of N. lugens, and the life cycle of N. lugens. The research was conducted under the temperature of 29.42°C with relative humidity of 61% and Light 12: Dark 12 times, using ten pairs of N. lugens brachypterous (F0 constant) and then was added with five male adults on fifth days after the first infestation (F0 changed). The varieties used were IR64, as a resistant variety, and Ketan Lusi, as a susceptible variety. The results showed that the adding of the macropterous males did not affect the number of macropterous, because of that has been preplanned by the F0. Therefore, the percentage of existing macropterous was 51−52%. Wereng Batang Cokelat (WBC) merupakan salah satu hama tanaman padi yang sangat penting. Kerusakan parah dapat menyebabkan hopperburn dan puso (gagal panen). Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui pengaruh kepadatan populasi dan tanaman inang sebagai tempat migrasi WBC. Parameter yang dikaji untuk mengetahui pengaruh kepadatan populasi WBC dan tanaman inang tempat migrasi WBC berdasarkan tingkat kekerasan dan kandungan tanin batang tanaman padi, fekunditas WBC, dan siklus hidup WBC. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada temperatur 29.42˚C dengan kelembapan relatif 61% dan durasi siang hari 12 jam: durasi malam hari 12 jam. Metode yang dilakukan adalah dengan menggunakan 10 pasang imago WBC brakhiptera (F0 konstan), kemudian dilakukan penambahan 5 ekor imago jantan pada hari kelima setelah infestasi awal (F0 diubah). Varietas padi yang digunakan yaitu padi varietas IR64 sebagai varietas tahan dan ketan Lusi sebagai varietas rentan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan imago jantan makroptera tidak berpengaruh terhadap jumlah keturunan makroptera yang dihasilkan, karena imago (F0) telah merencanakan terlebih dahulu keturunan yang akan dihasilkan. Oleh karena itu, persentase terbentuk keturunan imago makroptera berkisar antara 51−52%.

The brown planthopper (BPH: Nilaparvata lugens Stål.) is a major pest of rice, Oryza sativa, in Asia. Host plant resistance has tremendous potential to reduce the damage caused to rice by the planthopper. However, the effectiveness of resistance genes varies spatially and temporally according to BPH virulence. Understanding patterns in BPH virulence against resistance genes is necessary to efficiently and sustainably deploy resistant rice varieties. To survey BPH virulence patterns, seven near-isogenic lines (NILs), each with a single BPH resistance gene (BPH2-NIL, BPH3-NIL, BPH17-NIL, BPH20-NIL, BPH21-NIL, BPH32-NIL and BPH17-ptb-NIL) and fifteen pyramided lines (PYLs) carrying multiple resistance genes were developed with the genetic background of the japonica rice variety, Taichung 65 (T65), and assessed for resistance levels against two BPH populations (Hadano-66 and Koshi-2013 collected in Japan in 1966 and 2013, respectively). Many of the NILs and PYLs were resistant against the Hadano-66 population but were less effective against the Koshi-2013 population. Among PYLs, BPH20+BPH32-PYL and BPH2+BPH3+BPH17-PYL granted relatively high BPH resistance against Koshi-2013. The NILs and PYLs developed in this research will be useful to monitor BPH virulence prior to deploying resistant rice varieties and improve rice’s resistance to BPH in the context of regionally increasing levels of virulence.

Resistance evaluation of modern rice varieties to brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens STÅL. The research was performed to understand the resistance of modern rice varieties to the field population of brown planthopper (BPH). The research studied BPH settling preference, numbers of laid eggs, and functional plant loss index (FPLI) of resistant and susceptible rice varieties. The results showed BPH were less settle and laid fewer eggs on resistant varieties. BPH significantly settled longer on TN1 than other varieties after 24 hours. The numbers of eggs laid on rice resistant varieties (Inpari 13, Inpari 31, Inpari 33, RH, and PTB33) were fewer compared to TN1. FPLI value in TN1 was the highest among the tested rice varieties. Inpari 13 had better resistance to BPH compared to Inpari 31 and Inpari 33. In managing BPH in endemic areas, we recommend Inpari 13, Inpari 31, and Inpari 33 to be planted in rotation.
