Bamboo is a lightweight and high-strength raw materials that encouraged researchers to investigate and explore, especially in the field of biocomposite and declared as one of the green-technology on the environment as fully accountable as eco-products. This research was to assess the technical feasibility of making single-layer experimental Medium-Density Particleboard panels from the bamboo waste of a three-year-old (Dendrocalamus asper). Waste materials were performed to produce composite materials using epoxy resin (C21H25C105) from a natural treatment by soaking with an average of pH 7.6 level of sea-water. Three different types of MDP produced, i.e., bamboo waste strip MDP (SMDP), bamboo waste chips MDP (CMDP) and bamboo waste mixed strip-chips MDP (MMDP) by following the same process. The experimental panels tested for their physical-mechanical properties according to the procedures defined by ASTM D1037-12. Conclusively, even the present study shows properties of MDP with higher and comparable to other composite materials; further research must be given better attention as potential substitute to be used as hardwood materials, especially in the production, design, and construction usage.

Three-dimensional integrated woven spacer sandwich composites have been widely used as industrial textiles for many applications due to their superior physical and mechanical properties. In this research, 3D integrated woven spacer sandwich composites of five different specifications were produced, and the mechanical properties and performance were investigated under different load conditions. XR-CT (X-ray computed tomography) images were employed to visualize the microstructural details and analyze the fracture morphologies of fractured specimens under different load conditions. In addition, the effects of warp and weft direction, face sheet thickness, and core pile height on the mechanical properties and performance of the composite materials were analyzed. This investigation can provide significant guidance to help determine the structure of composite materials and design new products according to the required mechanical properties.

ABSTRACTMixture models were studied in an effort to predict the microwave frequency permittivities of unidirectional-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic-matrix composite materials as a function of fiber volume fraction, fiber orientation relative to the electric field, and temperature. The permittivities of the constituent fiber and plastic materials were measured using a resonant cavity perturbation technique at 9.4 GHz and at 2.45 GHz. The permittivities of the composite specimens were measured using a reflection cavity technique at 9.4 GHz and at 2.45 GHz. Simple “rule-of-mixtures” models that use the fiber and plastic permittivities have been found to approximate the complex dielectric properties of the composite for varied fiber volume fractions. The permittivities of oriented composites were modeled using a tensor rotation procedure. Composite permittivities were modeled with temperature up to the glass transition temperature of the thermoplastic matrix.

As the surface friction between feeding rolls and metal sheet generates the feeding power of ECAR, the generated feeding power is low, and the friction between the metal sheet and ECAR die should be minimized. However, for obtaining a large shear deformation by ECAR, the metal sheet should be tightly contacted with the wall of ECAR die. In this condition, the thickness of the metal sheet is continuously increased during ECAR. A new ECAR apparatus is developed for maximizing the shear deformation and obtaining sheet thickness uniformity, and succeeding continuous ECAR with such a limited feeding power. By controlling the outlet gap of the ECAR die with elastic unit, the thickness of the metal sheet is kept uniform. Detailed thickness control mechanism during the new ECAR process is analyzed. A sheet of Al 6063 alloy that is 1-pass deformed with the new ECAR apparatus shows below ±0.037 mm of thickness variation and 0.61 of shear strain.

Defects in composite laminates are difficult to detect because of the conductive and paramagnetic properties of composite materials. Timely detection of defects in composite laminates can improve reliability. This research illustrates the preliminary analysis and detection of delaminations in carbon fiber laminate beams using a single layer of magnetostrictive particles and noncontacting concentric magnetic excitation and sensing coils. The baseline analytical models also begin to address the intrusive nature of the magnetostrictive particles as well as relate the applied excitation field with the stress and magnetic flux densities induced in the magnetostrictive layer. Numerical methods are used to begin to characterize the presence of magnetostrictive particles in the laminate and the behavior of the magnetostrictive particles in relationship to the magnetic field used during sensing. Unidirectional laminates with embedded delaminations are used for simulations and experimentations. A novel, yet simplified fabrication method is discussed to ensure consistent scanning and sensing capabilities. The nondestructive evaluation scanning experiments were conducted with various shapes and sizes of damages introduced into carbon fiber–reinforced polymeric composite structures. The results demonstrate high potential for magnetostrictive particles as a low-cost, noncontacting, and reliable sensor for nondestructive evaluation of composite materials.
