The article is devoted to the multidimensional problem of preservation of electronic information. There is analyzed the experience of the past to preserve the printed information on paper. At present all the information environment has become more complex and diverse, a lot of new kinds and types of information and its media have appeared; however, the philosophical basis and realistic objectives for the long-term preservation of digital information are still missing. It is highlighted that the preservation of electronic information can be achieved only through forming and implementation of effective targeted policy and sustained activities at global and national levels. There were defined the first priority tasks for preservation of electronic information resources.

This chapter defines metadata, their types, creation, and some of the important functions. It enumerates an overview of the basic elements of the Dublin Core Metadata standard, and other metadata standards are also mentioned. The problem has been studied based on the information available in the open literature. As electronic information resources are rising and digital library initiatives are gaining wide acceptance, knowledge of metadata formats will help our library professionals in adapting their skills in cataloguing, classification, subject heading, key wording, and indexing for better inventory and exhaustive usage of electronic information. Metadata serves three general purposes. It supports resource discovery and locates the actual digital resource by inclusion of a digital identifier. As the number of electronic resources grows, metadata is used to create aggregate sites, bringing similar resources together and distinguishing dissimilar resources. The World Wide Web has created a revolution in the accessibility of digital information resources. Metadata is key to ensuring that resources will survive and continue to be accessible into the future. It can be embedded in a digital object or it can be stored separately like library catalogues. The Dublin Core (DC) is the most popular and widely accepted standard proposed to describe almost all categories of networked electronic resources.

This book presented readers with numerous views, perspectives, and issues regarding the past, present and future of libraries, librarianship and the information profession in the networked environment. By reviewing the various chapters in this book, readers rapidly conclude that the information environment, particularly the digital information environment, requires a reconceptualization of the information creation, dissemination and consumption processes. Information professionals, and those relying on information professionals, are at an exciting and challenging point in their careers — the transition to the networked information resources and services environment. Meeting this challenge necessitates the resolution to numerous issues, several of which this chapter presents below.

Universitas Gadjah Mada Library provides various information resources either in printed or electronic formats. The Library has subscribed to electronic information resources in the form of ejournal databases. The availability and utilization of these resources need to be evaluated. This study is a citation analysis of theses of the students from science and technology cluster of Universitas Gadjah Mada in 2015. It is aimed at identifying: 1) types of information resources used by the students in thesis writing, 2)intensity of the utilization of e-journal information resources by the students, and 3) the availability of the required information in the databases subscribed by UGM Library. The object of the study consisted of 7,925 citation derived from 222 theses of the students from science and technology cluster UGM. Data were obtained from documentation. This study used citation analysis to analyze all citations. The result of the study showed types of information resources used by the students in thesis writing were books, journals, theses, websites, proceedings, government regulations/acts, others (maps, learning materials, guides to laboratory practice), research reports and dissertations and papers. Books were information resources mostly used. Journals utilized in thesis writing comprised as much as 25% (1,997 citations) and 84% (1,685 citations) of the journals were English. As many as 1,078 citations (64%) were available and 607 citations (36%) unavailable in the journals subscribed by UGM Library.

The advent of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has revolutionised how library resources are made and transmitted to end-users. It has effectively improved the standard of education and research in tertiary institutions worldwide by providing various essential resources, including e-books, journals and databases. However, it has been observed that students still abstain from making the best usage of the digital library, instead using search engines rather than institutional digital libraries. This study investigated the factors influencing the behavioural intention of postgraduate (PG) students to use electronic information resources (EIRs). The Unified Theory of Acceptance of Technology (UTAUT) model was adopted. A cross-sectional research design was used to assess the factors influencing the use of EIRs. A sample of 362 PG students was determined using a Monte Carlo simulation approach. Data were collected from participants via the administration of 400 copies of the questionnaire. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and the Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modelling (CB-SEM) were used to analyse data collected. The findings revealed that performance expectancy (PE) and effort expectancy (EE) were the two constructs that influenced PG students’ behavioural intention to use EIRs. In contrast, social influence (SI) and facilitating condition (FC) did not change the PG students’ behavioural plan to use EIRs. The study recommended the need for adequate training for postgraduate (PG) students on the obligation to accept and use EIRs.

The present study deals with Utilization of ICT among the faculty members of Siddha Colleges and various level of operating system with the information accessed by the faculty through the internet. The survey was conducted with the help of the questionnaire and personal interview. The responses received from the available faculty are presented in tables and data is analyzed by using simple statistical method. The findings reveals that the access of electronic information is an important component of research activities for faculty members like E-Journals, E-books, E-databases are most preferred electronic information resources.

Tremendous advancement in Information and Communication Technology has its impact on all walks of life. The advent of Internet and the World Wide Web has particularly impacted Library and Information domain. Library and Information Centers today play an important role in enhancing the quality of academic environment and influence basic and core activity of the research centers. They help the users to identify and access the variety knowledge resources in different formats such as electronic information resources in academic institutions. The purpose of this paper to it understands the usage pattern of electronic information resources in an academic institute by the research scholars. A survey method is adopted to know the frequency of use, level of satisfaction with different resources, and the problems encountered while using electronic information resources at REVA University, Bengaluru.
