This paper presents the Digital Edition of the Vocabularies of the Academy of Sciences project, which aims to digitise the spelling vocabularies of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences (ACL) in order to create a digital lexicographic corpus bringing together the printed versions of all these lexicographical reference works – the 1940, 1947, 1970, and finally the 2012 editions. The first stage started with the Vocabulário Ortográfico da Língua Portuguesa [Orthographic Vocabulary of the Portuguese Language] (VOLP-1940), our case study. After digitising this vocabulary, the work described here focuses on the linguistic annotation of VOLP-1940 using eXtensible Markup Language (XML), an annotation metalanguage, and following the annotation directives of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), more specifically the application of TEI Lex-0, a new TEI sub-format. We aim to highlight the need for rigorous linguistic data processing in the creation of new lexical resources to increase the quality of their description and applicability.

The modelling and encoding of polylexical units, i.e. recurrent sequences of lexemes that are perceived as independent lexical units, is a topic that has not been covered adequately and in sufficient depth by the Guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), a de facto standard for the digital representation of textual resources in the scholarly research community. In this paper, we use the Dictionary of the Portuguese Academy of Sciences as a case study for presenting our ongoing work on encoding polylexical units using TEI Lex-0, an initiative aimed at simplifying and streamlining the encoding of lexical data with TEI in order to improve interoperability. We introduce the notion of macro- and microstructural relevance to differentiate between polylexicals that serve as headwords for their own independent dictionary entries and those which appear inside entries for different headwords. We develop the notion of lexicographic transparency to distinguish between those units which are not accompanied by an explicit definition and those that are: the former are encoded as <form>–like constructs, whereas the latter becomes <entry>–like constructs, which can have further constraints imposed on them (sense numbers, domain labels, grammatical labels etc.). We codify the use of attributes on <gram> to encode different kinds of labels for polylexicals (implicit, explicit and normalised), concluding that the interoperability of lexical resources would be significantly improved if dictionary encoders would have access to an expressive but relatively simple typology of polylexical units.

Abstract The main aim of this study is to introduce a model of TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) annotation of Hebrew elements in Judeo-Arabic texts, i.e., code switching (CS), borrowing, and Hebrew quotations. This article will provide an introduction to using XML (Extensible Markup Language) to investigate sociolinguistic aspects in medieval Judeo-Arabic texts. Accordingly, it will suggest to what extent using XML is useful for investigating linguistic and sociolinguistic features in the Judeo-Arabic paradigm. To provide an example for how XML annotation could be applied to Judeo-Arabic texts, a corpus of 300 pages selected from three Judeo-Arabic books has been manually annotated using the TEI P5. The annotation covers all instances of CS, borrowing, and Hebrew quotations in that corpus.

This chapter describes how digital critical edition supposes a mastery of markup systems, providing an overview in the form of an inventory of standards, and of markup, presentation, and archiving techniques. It discusses the state of the art while focusing on key architectures and techniques considered as the basis of digital critical edition. The chapter introduces some aspects of markup technology that are particularly relevant to textual scholarship, such as the Extensible Markup Language (XML) and the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), and considers some of their limitations, possibilities, and future potential. Since there is no need to be conversant with all aspects and details of the markup technology, most of what is covered here is of a general nature, albeit focusing on issues assumed to be of particular relevance for textual scholarship.

Purpose – The purpose of this case study is to describe a multi-year text encoding initiative (TEI) project that took place in the McGill University Library, Rare Books and Special Collections. Design/methodology/approach – Early nineteenth century English language chapbooks from the collection were digitized, and the proofed text files were encoded in TEI, following Best Practices for TEI in Libraries (2011). Findings – The project coordinator describes the TEI file structure and customizations for the project to support a distinct subject classification of the chapbooks and the encoding of the woodcut illustrations using the Iconclass classification. Research limitations/implications – The authors focus on procedures, use of TEI data elements and encoding challenges. Practical implications – This paper documents the project workflow and provides a possible model for future digital humanities projects. Social implications – The graduate students who participated in the TEI encoding learned a new suite of skills involving extensible markup language (XML) file structure and the application of a markup language that requires interpretation. Originality/value – The McGill Library Chapbook Project Web site, launched in 2013 now provides access to 933 full-text works.

Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a textual markup language which becomes more and more important in the Internet web service. However, some distinct disadvantages exist in XML, such as its nature of redundancy, which consumes the limited network’s bandwidth greatly especially in mobile computing. Considering the characteristics of the mobile commerce, the handsets’ memory capability and data processing time are two problems for XML being applied. This paper studies an enhancement of XML for the purpose of application in mobile e-commerce, called SXML, which means Simple XML to enhance the XML used in mobile web service. It helps XML producers minimizing the size effects of XML, e.g., the size overhead and slow implementation speed. Comprehensive simulations show that the SXML could reduce the size of XML documents and reduce the time of implementation, consequently utilize the bandwidth effectively.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study the spelling suggestion (SS) problem for extensible markup language (XML) keyword search, which provides users with alternative queries that may better express users search intention. Design/methodology/approach – To return the suggested queries more efficiently, the authors evaluate the quality of the query by estimating the selectivity and quality of each query pattern. The selectivity estimation is based on the XSketch synopsis, which summarizes the structure and value distribution of the original XML data source. The authors propose an approach to generating the top-K query candidates. Findings – Experiments with real datasets verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the authors' approach. Originality/value – The authors proposed a SS approach based on the XSketch summary.

Plagiarism and contract cheating are serious academic issues that ‘undermine the integrity of education’ (Bretag, 2013). There are a number of tools that can help assessors detect plagiarism – particularly where text has been copied and pasted: Turnitin (https://www. turnitin.com), PlagScan (https://www.plagscan.com) and Urkund (https://www.urkund.com) are examples of such tools. The providers of these tools are also developing authorship tools that use stylometrics and linguistics to determine matches between authors (whether the submitting author, or a third party). It is also possible for an assessor to copy passages of text and paste them into a Google search (or similar) with quotes surrounding the passage to see if there are any immediate online matches. In a previous paper Using digital forensic techniques to identify contract cheating: A case study (Johnson & Davies, 2020), the authors began using digital forensic techniques to see if it was possible to detect contract cheating. In that paper, consideration was given to how forensic techniques allow review of document edits through examining the Open Office extensible markup language (OOXML) format of the document. This paper seeks to extend that research by further exploration of the OOXML format to establish whether forensic artefacts can be found to indicate that work has been copied and pasted from online sources. A number of sample documents were created by the authors and the xml analysed. Whilst there were some indicators to suggest work had been copied and pasted, more analysis is required to develop the techniques into a more reliable tool.

This research uses the waterfall method. In the waterfall method there are several steps including requirements, design, implementation, verification and maintenance. This "How To Make Money Online" application is still based on Android, therefore the author intends to make a web-based "How To Make Money Online" application development design. The result of this research is an application development design. Application development is easier with the application design that will be developed. The conclusion is the "How To Make Money Online" application development design using HTML (HyperText Markup Language) programming. Before this application was developed, it was based on Android and after it was developed it became web-based. In this application there are several menus including the homepage, articles, contacts, about us and help. Purpose Misophonia is a sound tolerance disorder condition in certain sounds that trigger intense emotional or physiological responses. While some persons may experience misophonia, a few patients suffer from misophonia. However, there is a dearth of literature on audiological assessment and management of persons with misophonia. The purpose of this report is to discuss the assessment of misophonia and highlight the management option that helped a patient with misophonia. Method A case study of a 26-year-old woman with the complaint of decreased tolerance to specific sounds affecting quality of life is reported. Audiological assessment differentiated misophonia from hyperacusis. Management included retraining counseling as well as desensitization and habituation therapy based on the principles described by P. J. Jastreboff and Jastreboff (2014). A misophonia questionnaire was administered at regular intervals to monitor the effectiveness of therapy. Results A detailed case history and audiological evaluations including pure-tone audiogram and Johnson Hyperacusis Index revealed the presence of misophonia. The patient benefitted from intervention, and the scores of the misophonia questionnaire indicated a decrease in the severity of the problem. Conclusions It is important to differentially diagnose misophonia and hyperacusis in persons with sound tolerance disorders. Retraining counseling as well as desensitization and habituation therapy can help patients who suffer from misophonia.

This paper presents a successful behavioral case study in treatment of chronic refractory cough in a 60-year-old adult female. The efficacy for speech-language pathology treating chronic cough is discussed along with description of treatment regime. Discussion focuses on therapy approaches used and the patient's report of changes in quality of life and frequency, duration, and severity reduction of her cough after treatment.
