Dry seeds of six faba bean varieties (Sakha 1, Nubaria 2, Nubaria 3, Giza 3, Giza 716 and Giza  843) were irradiated with low doses of gamma rays (20, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 200 Gy). Treated seeds and control seeds were grown for two seasons. Results revealed that doses below 100 Gy increased morphological  growth parameters as well as some yield parameters. The most effective dose varied in different faba bean varieties. Higher doses above 100 Gy were detrimental to plant growth and yield. The variation in ISSR profiling in response to g-irradiation treatments in M2 was detected using seven ISSR primers. The seven primers produced 81 bands including 75 polymorphic bands and 6 unique bands. The unique bands were scored in var. Nubaria 3 by the doses (20, 80 and 100 Gy), var. Giza 3 by the doses (20 and 60 Gy) and var. Nubaria 2 by the dose 200 Gy. The two varieties Nubaria 3 and Nubaria 2 showed higher numbers of polymorphic bands (225, 191) respectively compared to other varieties. Polymorphic information content (PIC) was estimated for each primer and ranged from 0.193 for primer 807 to 0.31 for primer 834 with a mean of 0.259.

The experiment was conducted to clarify the growth and yield response of two rice cultivars, BR55 and BR43 under salt stress. Six different concentrations of NaCl viz 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 mM and distilled water (control) were applied on the rice cultivars which were grown under pot culture condition. Growth parameters like plant height, tiller number, leaf number and leaf area were negatively affected by salinity in both cultivars. Salt stress caused a significant reduction in yield in both cultivars of rice. Growth reduction was higher in BR43 than in BR55.The reduction in yield and yield parameters were found to be lower in BR55 than those in BR43. The results obtained in the present study suggest that BR55 showed higher salt tolerance than in BR43. Jahangirnagar University J. Biol. Sci. 7(2): 1-12, 2018 (December)

The Amazon is the largest tropical forest in the world and is home to around 20% of all the biodiversity on the planet, among the species present in the Amazon is Copaifera langsdorffii, exploited mainly for the extraction of oil-resin and wood, often in ways incorrect, which can cause the loss of genetic variability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic structure and diversity among individuals of C. langsdorffii located in Mato Grosso, Brazil, using ISSR markers. We sampled leaves from 27 adult individuals of C. langsdorffii, whose total genomic DNA was extracted. A total of 12 ISSR primers were used for the molecular characterization of the individuals. A grouping analysis was performed using the unweighted pair group method, Bayesian analysis and characterized by the genetic diversity. The genetic diversity among and within the groups was demonstrated by the AMOVA. As a result, 106 fragments were amplified and 98.11% were polymorphic. The polymorphic information content of each primer ranged from 0.45 to 0.81.  The dendrogram showed the formation of 4 distinct groups. The greatest genetic variability is found within the groups and not between them. The percentage of polymorphism, genetic dissimilarity values and genetic diversity indexes indicate that there is high genetic variability among Copaifera langsdorffii individuals, suggesting that ISSR primers were efficient in detecting polymorphism in this species and that the individuals have potential for compose programs aimed at the preservation of the species and the ability to integrate germplasm banks.

<p>Two cultivars of faba bean (<em>Vicia faba</em> ‘Giza 843’ and ‘Nobaria 3’) that differ in aluminum (Al) tolerance were used to study cytogenetic and genomic alterations under the influence of Al Cl3 (5, 15, and 25 mmol AlCl3) for different periods (6, 12 and 24 h). Under Al treatments, mitotic index in both cultivars decreased and total chromosomal abnormalities increased. The frequencies of micronuclei and chromosomal abnormalities (C-anaphase, metaphase-star chromosomes, breaks, sticky and disturbed chromosomes during metaphase or anaphase) in ‘Giza 843’ were lower than in ‘Nabaria 3’. Increase of the registered cytogenetic events under the influence of Al stress led to increase the detected polymorphism using RAPD and ISSR markers. Application of RAPD primers gave the same value of polymorphism in both faba bean cultivars under Al stress. Polymorphism average of nine ISSR primers of ’Giza 843’ (65.36 %) was lower than that of ‘Nobaria 3’ (71.59 %). Molecular markers, cytogenetic characteristics and seedling growth data indicate that Al tolerance of ‘Giza 843’ was higher than of ‘Nobaria 3’. This work shows that cytogenetic and ISSR techniques could be used efficiently to distinguish between the ability of two faba bean cultivars to tolerate toxic effects of Al.</p>

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2019 at farmer’s field in Panruti near Cuddalore district (Tamil Nadu) to study effect of organic manures as INM component on growth, yield and quality of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.) in a randomized block design. The treatments consisted of recommended dose of fertilizers at two levels (160:60:30 and 120:45:22.5 kg NPK ha-1) and organic manures (20 t FYM ha-1, 50 kg Bio ash ha-1, 5 t press mud granules ha-1, 20 kg Sea weed extract granules ha-1 and 5 t neem cake ha-1) and replicated three times. The growth and yield parameters of chilli were significantly influenced due to application of organic manures. Among the treatments, 75% RDF + 20 t FYM + 20 kg Sea weed extract granules + 5 t neem cake ha-1 (T8) exhibited better performances of growth and yield parameters of chilli cv. Indus 13. The maximum values of growth parameters such as plant height, leaves plant-1, branches plant-1, canopy volume, chlorophyll content in the leaves and net photosynthetic rate were observed in this treatment (T8). The yield parameters such as days to first flowering, days to 50% flowering, flowers plant-1, fruit set, fruits plant-1, fruit length, fruit girth, pericarp thickness, pulp seed ratio, single fruit weight, total fruit yield (28.18 t ha-1) and quality parameters like capsaicin content (0.76%) and ascorbic acid content (171.3 mg g-1) were highest in this treatment (T8) suggested this is the best integrated nutrient management combination for chilli. Application of 100% RDF (160 : 30 : 30 kg ha-1) proved inferior in respect of growth and yield of chilli.

The study shows genetic diversity of 38 Vitis vinifera L. cultivars and hybrids originating in North America and Europe, including cultivars selected in Poland, which have not been characterized with the use of DNA markers yet. The agrobiological features of the genotypes selected for testing, indicate that they may be useful for the breeding of new cultivars and grape production. The use of 12 ISSR primers allowed to obtain 94.4% of polymorphism. The polymorphic information content (PIC) value was high and varied between 0.829 and 0.953 with an average of 0.897. The resolving power (Rp) ranged between 3.678 and 8.892 with an average of 6.347. Primers UBC 809, UBC 810, UBC 812, UBC 855, UBC 891 and UBC 810 were found to be highly effective (informative). Similarity coefficient ranged between 0.167 and 1.0, which indicates high degree of diversity of tested  grape cultivars. Tested cultivars were grouped in 3 main clusters; one of them was further divided into 6 subclusters. ‘Pannonia Kincse’ and ‘Danmarpa Polonia’ were not differentiated. Phenotypic differences among those two cultivars suggest that ‘Danmarpa Polonia’ might be a clone of ‘Pannonia Kincse’ and other molecular techniques must be used to differentiate them. Morphological and agrobiological characters of cultivars support the results obtained by ISSR markers.

Soils fertility declining limits agricultural production in Togo where maize (Zea mays L.) is most cereal cropping and base staple food. Currently, mineral fertilizers are beyond the reach of farmers due to high price and limited availability. This study assessed the response of household urban wastes compost to the growth and yield of maize Ikenne variety. Experiments were performed in rainy season of years 2018 and 2019 at Teaching Research and Demonstration Farm of Agronomy School in University of Lome, Togo. Agronomic trials were set at randomized in complete block design with three replications, where control plots, compost plots at different doses and mineral fertilizers plots constituted the treatments. The growth parameters, including plant height, stem girth, leaf area and number of leaves per plant, were measured at the milky maize stage. The yield parameters, including length and girth of cob, thousand grains weight, grain yield and straw yield, were collected at harvesting. Data were statistically analyzed. The results showed three distinct homogeneous groups of treatments both for growth and yield parameters. Plots treated with compost at 30 t ha-1 and 40 t ha-1 constitute the best group, which differs significantly from the second group formed by plots treated with compost at 10 t ha-1 and 20 t ha-1 and mineral fertilizer plots. Control treatments constitute the last group. Growth and yield parameters values increase with compost dose. Far from being used alone in place of mineral conventional fertilizer, integrated fertilization based on combination of mineral fertilizer and compost of household urban wastes will investigated in maize cropping in southern Togo for optimal compost dose to recommend. Abstract The study was conducted to evaluate the growth and yield response of M20 with the application of Nostoc and to determine the ideal combination of inorganic fertilizer and Nostoc. Based on the result of the study, in terms of growth parameters; application of 3 g Nostoc with 1/2 RRIF gave the best response among the treatment in plant height, while application of 3 g Nostoc with 3/4 RRIF was the best treatment when it comes to days to flowering. Furthermore, the application of full RRIF was the best in terms of chlorophyll content. In yield parameters, the application of 3 g Nostoc with 1/4 RRIF gave significance response to grain yield and biomass. While the application of no Nostoc with 1/4 RRIF had the heaviest 1000 grain weight. For the number of tillers per plant (14.7), the application of 3 g Nostoc with 3/4 RRIF gave the best response among the treatments. And for the number of filled grains, rice grown without Nostoc but fertilized only with 1/2 RRIF had the most number of filled grain. Overall, Nostoc treatment did not significantly alter the response of M20 based on all agronomic parameters tested in the study.

Background: Somaclonal variation is considered as a source of genetic variation for crop improvement. It has been investigated using cytological, biochemical and molecular techniques. Methods: Genetic stability in the embryo-derived axillary shoots of 4 chickpea genotypes was assessed using eight inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) and 19 random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) primers. Result: RAPD primers produced 94 and ISSR primers produced 38 distinct and scorable alleles, with an average of 4.9 alleles for RAPD and 4.75 for ISSR primers. The polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0.36 to 0.90 for RAPD and from 0.50 to 0.87 for ISSR. ISSR recognized a 90%, but RAPD recognized 82% similarity value. No absolute similarity value was between the mother plant and the regenerated shoots for the overall genotypes. At a 90% similarity value, 15 out of the 20 regenerated shoots from ‘Giza 88’ group with their mother plant using ISSR markers; however, 11 regenerated shoots grouped with their mother plant in one central cluster for ‘Giza 4’ using RAPD markers. The observed variations in the total number of polymorphic RAPD and ISSR bands and the number of bands specific to the mother and regenerated shoots, detected intra-clonal variation and genetic instability seem to be genotype-dependent.
