Abstract

The article aims at understanding Vietnamese high school students’ capacity in writing English evaluative paragraphs about three given topics about the internet, the favorite movie and the teacher. Using 3- topic paragraph writing tests and a 15-item questionnaire given to 40 participants as instruments for data collection, the findings were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. The result showed that although the students did not prepare carefully for evaluative writing in terms of knowledge and practice, they could produce evaluative paragraphs using chiefly words and mental and behavioral sentences for affect, judgement and appreciation to the entities in three topics. Their suggestions to themselves and teachers, if being seriously concerned by teachers, surely help them overcome difficulties and improve their writing in the future, even when they enter the university.

Problem. The problem for Ukrainian universities is the annual enrollment of students in the amount that allows the university to exist and fulfill its purpose. In the conditions of a significant decrease in the number of graduates in our country and an increase in the number of higher educational institutions, the competition among universities for entrants has sharply increased. Goal. It is necessary to create an information system to inform high school students throughout Ukraine about the existence of the Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University, its specialties, opportunities, advantages, etc. Perhaps the consequence of such widespread information will be an increase in the number of applicants at our university. Methodology. When developing an information system for fast automatic sending of messages to many thousands of addresses of educational institutions of Ukraine of the III level of accreditation, it was impossible to rely on existing analogues, because such were not found in the information space. We used the method of synthesis of information systems on the technical task. Results. An information system has been developed for fast sending of messages to ten thousand addresses of educational institutions of the III level of accreditation. The developed information system searches for the corresponding addresses on the Internet and enters them into the computer database. The basis of the developed system is the database "Graduate of Ukraine", which contains the necessary information about almost all educational institutions with III level of accreditation. The algorithm of work of the developed information system and a kind of the interface of a software complex are resulted. In addition, many results of the system are presented: the created tables with data on educational institutions, the developed inquiries and reports, e-mails with invitations to the Open Doors Day. Originality. The developed system is an original development in Ukraine. No mention was found of an information system that creates and generates database tables and then uses them for programmed actions. Practical value. The developed information system is already used to provide students of graduation and other classes of all educational institutions of Ukraine of the III level of accreditation with information about our university; regarding the specialties offered by the university and the corresponding professions; regarding open days, preparatory courses and much more.

Acetaminophen is a popular nonprescription analgesic that is often taken in overdose by adolescents during suicidal gestures. The authors hypothesized that most adolescents are naive about the toxic and lethal potential of acetaminophen in overdose. A one-page, 12-item questionnaire was administered to 169 high school students to evaluate their perceptions and knowledge in this area. Whereas only 22% of the sample underestimated the dose of acetaminophen necessary to cause harm, 40.5% underestimated the potential lethality of acetaminophen in overdose. Moreover, 17% of the sample did not believe one could ingest enough acetaminophen to cause death. The lack of knowledge about acetaminophen's potential dangerousness, its widespread availability, and an absence of early symptoms of hepatotoxicity make this medication highly dangerous to those adolescents who take it in overdose during parasuicidal behavior.
