African American women have been silenced and kept ignorant by the dominant culture and it is the human need to create and maintain a true self in a social context. However, such an endeavor becomes an ordeal for those who are doubly oppressed, for those who are muted and mutilated physically and psychically through the diabolic crossfire of caste/race, sex and colonialism. This paper focuses on, an African American Woman, throughout her journey of life, seeking completeness in terms of family, society and community level.

African American woman are 43% more likely to die from breast cancer than white women and have increased the risk of tumor recurrence despite lower incidence. We investigate variations in microsatellite genomic regions—a type of repetitive DNA—and possible links to the breast cancer mortality gap. We screen 33 854 microsatellites in germline DNA of African American women with and without breast cancer: 4 are statistically significant. These are located in the 3′ UTR (untranslated region) of gene ZDHHC3, an intron of transcribed pseudogene INTS4L1, an intron of ribosomal gene RNA5-8S5, and an intergenic region of chromosome 16. The marker in ZDHHC3 is interesting for 3 reasons: (a) the ZDHHC3 gene is located in region 3p21 which has already been linked to early invasive breast cancer, (b) the Kaplan-Meier estimator demonstrates that ZDHHC3 alterations are associated with poor breast cancer survival in all racial/ethnic groups combined, and (c) data from cBioPortal suggest that ZDHHC3 messenger RNA expression is significantly lower in African Americans compared with whites. These independent lines of evidence make ZDHHC3 a candidate for further investigation.

Dr. Marie Maynard Daly received her PhD in Chemistry from Columbia University in 1947. Although she was hardly the first of her race and gender to engage in the field, she was the first African American woman to receive a PhD in chemistry in the United States. In this book, Jeannette Brown, an African American woman chemist herself, will present a wide-ranging historical introduction to the relatively new presence of African American women in the field of chemistry. It will detail their struggles to obtain an education and their efforts to succeed in a field in which there were few African American men, much less African American women. The book contains sketches of the lives of African America women chemists from the earliest pioneers up until the late 1960's when the Civil Rights Acts were passed and greater career opportunities began to emerge. In each sketch, Brown will explore women's motivation to study the field and detail their often quite significant accomplishments. Chapters focus on chemists in academia, industry, and government, as well as chemical engineers, whose career path is very different from that of the tradition chemist. The book concludes with a chapter on the future of African American women chemists, which will be of interest to all women interested in science.

When I wrote my first book African American Women Chemists I neglected to state that it was a historical book. I researched to find the first African American woman who had studied chemistry in college and worked in the field. The woman that I found was Josephine Silane Yates who studied chemistry at the Rhode Island Normal School in order to become a science teacher. She was hired by the Lincoln Institute in 1881 and later was, I believe, the first African American woman to become a professor and head a department of science. But then again there might be women who traveled out of the country to study because of racial prejudice in this country. The book ended with some women like myself who were hired as chemists in the industry before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Therefore, I decided to write another book about the current African American women chemists who, as I say, are hiding in plain sight. To do this, I again researched women by using the web or by asking questions of people I met at American Chemical Society ACS or National Organization for the Professional Advances of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) meetings. I asked women to tell me their life stories and allow me to take their oral history, which I recorded and which were transcribed thanks to the people at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia, PA. Most of the stories of these women will be archived at the CHF in their oral history collection. The women who were chosen to be in this book are an amazing group of women. Most of them are in academia because it is easy to get in touch with professors since they publish their research on the web. Some have worked for the government in the national laboratories and a few have worked in industry. Some of these women grew up in the Jim Crow south where they went to segregated schools but were lucky because they were smart and had teachers and parents who wanted them to succeed despite everything they had to go through.

African American women experience multiple factors that increase their risks of developing mental health disturbances, particularly depression and panic episodes. Effective treatment of these disorders requires adaptation of evidence-based treatments to demonstrate cultural competency. Adapting theoretical approaches to meet the cultural needs of African American female clients by incorporating their preferred coping methods into treatment is one example of genuine regard and culturally responsive clinical practice. In this paper, we provide a review of relevant literature describing unique considerations for working with African American women, as well as a case illustration to highlight the implementation of culturally adapting cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in the treatment of panic episodes and depression with an African American woman. A session-by-session protocol outlines how to adapt CBT to meet the client’s coping preferences of spirituality, family, and community.

Abstract Depression is gradually increasing in African American women. These women are experiencing role changes and additional life stressors. Depressed African American women may perceive themselves as being devalued by society with fewer support systems to buffer stressful events. Depressive symptoms may develop into clinical depression and a further decrease in the quality of life for the African American woman. The assumption that all women share similar experiences does not allow for differences to emerge regarding the diagnostic process, measuring tools, and successful treatment strategies for various cultures. The authors developed a Multifaceted Model of Depression in African American Women for improving treatment of African American women with depression and future research needs. Cultural background plays a vital role in how the symptoms of mental illnesses are developed, reported, interpreted, and how women are treated. African Americans who subscribed to the Strong Black Women Archetype (SBWA) are naturally strong, resilient, self-contained, and self-sacrificing. This self-reliance prevents them from reaching out for social support. This, in turn, can contribute to depressive symptoms with negative health outcomes. The African American women are more apt to have less access to routine medical care where early diagnosis and interventions can be done, so their mental health problems (e.g., depression, stress, etc.) are often more developed, complicated, and their social supports more depleted when they do access treatment. When African American women do have access to mental health care, they receive poor quality care compared to Whites.

The number of African American women who become school principals is low per national and local statistics. An unconscious bias towards African American women may have contributed to these low statistics. The process of applying for a school principal's position has not been consistent for over a century. It seems that for job openings in which the dominant culture is not African American, the likelihood of being the school principal is doubtful. Unveiling and examining these biases may lead to determining how to include more African American women in educational administration. This chapter will describe 10 African American women who encountered unconscious bias as they sought and procured public-school principalship.

This qualitative descriptive research study looks at the services that community-based breast cancer support agencies provide to underserved and African American women who are at risk for or diagnosed with breast cancer in Memphis, Tennessee. We seek their understanding of breast cancer mortality disparities in Memphis. Data were collected using semi-structured in-depth focus groups with five breast cancer support agencies. Categories and patterns were established using thematic analysis and a deductive a priori template of codes. Thematic analysis is a method for identifying, analyzing, and reporting themes within the data. The main themes identified within support agencies for African American women with breast cancer who live in Memphis were barriers to the use of services, education, health system support, and emotional support. Numerous sub themes included cost of medications, support group supplemental programming, eligibility for mobile services, patient/provider communication, optimism about the future, and family advice. Procrastinating, seeking second options, fearfulness, insurance, childcare, and transportation were barriers to care. Community-based breast cancer support agencies play a critical role as connectors for women with breast cancer who live in medically underserved areas and must find their way within a fragmented medical care system.

Considerable evidence suggests that there are ethnic differences in lipid metabolism between African American and Caucasian women, which may result in increased synthesis of fat in adipose tissue. The purpose of this study was to measure the in vitro rates of [14C]glucose incorporation into the glyceride-glycerol backbone of triglycerides (TG) and diglycerides (DG) in abdominal subcutaneous (SAT) and omental adipose tissue (OAT). Morbidly obese [African American ( n = 15): body mass index (BMI) = 45 ± 2.3; Caucasian ( n = 18): BMI = 51 ± 2.3] and preobese [African American ( n = 7): BMI = 27 ± 1.0; Caucasian ( n = 7): BMI = 25 ± 1.0] women were examined in this study. There were no significant differences in the rates of synthesis of either TG or DG in SAT of either preobese or obese women. On the other hand, both preobese and obese African American women had higher rates of synthesis of TG in OAT compared with their Caucasian counterparts. This increase in TG synthesis in OAT was not due to differences in cell size or rates of reesterification. Thus African American woman have an increased capacity to synthesize TG in OAT compared with Caucasian women, which may contribute to the higher prevalence of obesity in African American women.
