The Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 resulted in New Zealand schools closing and teaching moving to online. This paper reports research which investigated senior high school students experience of learning from home during these school closures and anything about the experience that they would like continued in the future. High school students in their final two years of schooling (n=1975) responded to a questionnaire consisting of quantitative and qualitative questions with qualitative data analysed thematically and quantitative data with descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that a variety of learning activities, feedback on learning, positive social interactions and effective use of technology supported students. A lack of motivation and daily structure were the major hinderances. The key experience they would like continued was greater flexibility in their learning. Schools demonstrated varying degrees of readiness for the crisis, but findings showed the need for resilience plans which include policies and practices for student and teacher digital readiness in preparation for future crises which result in emergency online learning.

One of the actions taken by the Indonesian government to stop the spread of COVID19 was closing all schools and running online teaching from home. Online learning creates distance between students and teachers. This study aimed to understand students’ perceptions of online education of art, specifically senior high school students in Probolinggo regency. The research focused on investigating students’ skills and comfortability during the learning process as well as the online learning management carried out by the teachers. This study used a quantitative approach with simple statistical computation. The researcher collected the data by distributing questionnaires to students at seven state senior high schools in Probolinggo utilizing Google Forms. The data were then descriptively analyzed. From 22 respondents, it was found that 9.1% did not have a smartphone; 81.8% stated that they could understand the online teaching materials; 27.3% expressed that they were not satisfied; and 54.5% said that the online learning demotivated them to learn arts. However, 95.5% of students believed that their teachers mastered the online classroom management. Results of the study show that senior high school students in Probolinggo have had a delightful experience in learning art online. However, it then slowly demotivates them to create art even though the majority of teachers have mastered the online learning technology. Students expect more varied creativity from teachers and stakeholders to ensure that learning art is entertaining and motivates them in the era of the pandemic. This article describes an engaging datagathering activity that involves exploring relationships between latitude and average monthly temperatures of cities in the Western Hemisphere. Our extensive work with middle school and high school students has confirmed this activity's attractive features: It is elastic (i.e., it can be adapted for use in either algebra 1 or algebra 2); it is interdisciplinary and can be taught through team teaching; and it requires wise and effective use of technology.

The online learning environment is an integral part of activities conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic in schools. This study explored the Malaysian high school students’ online learning perspectives using a mixed-methods study. The quantitative findings reported that students are not ready to go online. The qualitative analysis revealed several emerging themes related to students’ dissatisfaction with the online learning environment. The issues are related to repository-based teaching, cognitive overload, social presence, technology comfort, and discipline. Students suggested that teachers should implement the use of standardised applications, fixed schedules, and interactive sessions. The study concluded that interactions are lacking during the online learning environment. However, the researcher hopes that once teachers are back from the COVID-19 pandemic, they will have a comprehensive understanding of technology tools to consider in their pedagogical practices. It is hoped that the post-pandemic will change the way schools and teachers perceive online learning. The sudden teaching practices during the COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly drive improvements in the use of technology in schools.
