Identification of Forest Fragments Potential for the delimitation of Ecological Corridors in the Itapemirim, ES River Basin through Remote Sensing techniques A B S T R A C TEcological corridors emerge as an alternative to mitigate the effects of forest fragmentation, allowing for the gene flow of fauna and flora and the recolonization of degraded areas. ABSTRACT In Brazil, the remaining areas of Atlantic Forest are intensely fragmented. The connection of forest fragments through ecological corridors is an important step in biodiversity conservation. Certain areas are more resilient, and in those areas, natural forest regeneration, for example, can be encouraged. The aim of this study was to identify areas of greater resilience in order to support the connection of Atlantic Forest fragments with ecological corridors. Forest fragments in the municipality of Paraíba do Sul, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, were mapped using the supervised maximum likelihood classification of an Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Landsat-8 sensor image. Next, we analyzed the influence of terrain attributes (aspect, incident solar radiation, slope, and curvature profile) on natural regeneration. The areas with the greatest potential to achieve natural regeneration and to form ecological corridors were indicated through fuzzy membership functions. Within Paraíba do Sul, 31% of the territory is covered by vegetation in different stages of regeneration. Recordings were made of 1,251 forest fragments in a middle or advanced stage of regeneration. These fragments are usually situated in the southeast, south, and southwest aspects, in areas that receive the least amount of global solar radiation (Wh·m-2) per year, and on slopes with an angle of inclination greater than 20%. The adjustment of fuzzy functions identified 17,327.5 ha with a tendency to recover, and which are therefore strategic areas in the development of ecological corridors.

CHANGE IN FOREST COVER OF THE NORTHWEST REGION OF AMAZON IN MATO GROSSO STATE ABSTRACT: In the past few years, the intensification of anthropic activities that modify the soil-vegetation cover in Brazil’s land has been occurring on a large scale. To monitor the forest cover changes, the techniques of Remote Sensing of vegetation are essential tools, especially in large areas and with difficult access, as is the case of the Brazilian Amazon. The aim of this work was to identify the changes in land use and land cover, over the past 20 years, in the municipalities of Aripuanã and Rondolândia, Northwest of Mato Grosso State, in order to quantify the effective altered areas. Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI digital classification images techniques were used in three different dates (1995, 2005 and 2015) and, later, the detection to the land use and land cover changes. The digital classification showed excellent results, with kappa index above 0.80 for the generated maps, indicating the digital classification as a potential tool for land use and land cover. Results reflect the conversion of forest areas mainly for agricultural activities, in the order of 472 km², representing a loss of 1.3% of Amazon forest surface in the study region. Keywords: forest conversion; land use and land cover; digital classification; multitemporal analysis.

Forest fragmentation is defined as the process by which a continuous area of habitat is reduced in size and divided between spaces. Therefore, due to the increase in these areas, this study aimed to conduct a systematic review of the literature on forest fragments in the Atlantic Forest biome in order to verify their main characteristics and landscape ecology. Publications in search platforms referring to the period from 2000 to 2020 were analyzed such as: SciELO, Google academic and CAPES journals portal. The search terms entered were: “Studies of forest fragments in the Atlantic Forest biome” and “Landscape ecology in forest fragments”. A total of 15 articles were selected from among the works found, and 5 of these were chosen to be evaluated in the present study. Four of the five works were carried out in the state of Espírito Santo, close to basins and sub-basins, and only one work was carried out in a state park. Thus, the evaluated works with the theme, study of fragmentation and ecology of the landscape showed a high degree of fragmentation, meaning that they have fragments smaller than 5 hectares; in addition, all fragments have an irregular edge effect. Therefore, measures aimed at the conservation of biodiversity are needed in all places so that there is ecological restoration of the landscape and conservation of fauna and flora in the Atlantic Forest biome.

MANAGEMENT, QUALITY AND DEGRADATION DYNAMICS OF PASTURES IN ATLANTIC FOREST BIOME, MINAS GERAIS – BRASIL ABSTRACT:Pastures under inefficient management practices get degraded, leading to serious socioeconomic and environmental issues. That being said, understanding the dynamics of such systems and their interaction with the environment is essential when it comes to looking towards sustainable alternatives for livestock activities. The management, annual dynamics and socio-environmental interactions in pastures in an hydrographic basin located in Atlantic Forest biome, Minas Gerais, Brasil, were studied during the hydrological year of 2016/2017. Field data and farmers reports were utilized, such as remote sensing via images from LANDSAT 8 OLI and Google Earth Pro®. A quality index was proposed for the pastures, which usually presented medium quality. Degradation levels were high, oscillating in a quadratic basis (levels 2, 4, 5 and IDP) and potential (level 1) with precipitation (p < 0,01), which suggests that irrigation might be an efficient practice when it comes to degradation control. During the year, at least 51,27% of pastures have presented signs of degradation, achieving 91,32% in dry periods. The results suggest less quality and bigger degradation levels in pastures located in high and steep areas. Considering the local environmental conditions, agroecological silvopasture systems are recommended regarding the pastures management. Keywords: land use, remote sensing, soil/landscape relationships, Zona da Mata, quality index.

The albedo is an important variable that controls the balance of radiation and energy of the atmosphere, so changes in land cover cause alterations in albedo values, influencing changes in climate behavior at different scales. The goal in this work was to investigate the possible occurrence and causes associated with surface albedo trends within the Atlantic Forest biome (São Francisco de Paula, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), during the last thirty years (1987-2017), evaluating the impacts of the forest cover structure on albedo trends. The study included images of the TM/Landsat 5 and OLI/Landsat 8 sensors over the period 1987 to 2017. The surface albedo was obtained from the SEBAL algorithm, which includes in its variables the reflectance values of each band, reflected solar radiation and atmospheric transmissivity. The trend analysis was performed by the Mann-Kendall test verifying the existence of significant trends over 30 years. Subsequently, the influence of vegetation greenness on the trend presented by the albedo surface was evaluated. Approximately 92% of the pixels with significant tendency are associated with the decreasing tendency of the albedo. The downward trend was observed with the change from the field to the forest cover, while increasing trends were influenced by the change in forest cover, such as the suppression of individuals from the upper forest canopy. The forest populations in areas of the Mata Atlântica biome had a large participation in the energy balance, which exposed a reduction of approximately 60% of the surface albedo with its implantation, showing its importance for reducing the emission of energy to the atmosphere. The spatial pattern of the trend distribution of the surface albedo is related to the concentration and vigor of the arboreal vegetation.

This study aims to determine (1) changes in land cover in the Mount Padang Region in 1996, 2006 and 2016, (2) changes in carbon stocks as a result of changes in land cover in the Mount Padang Region of Padang City. The type of research is quantitative descriptive. Changes in land cover isanalyzed based on Landsat TM 5 of 1996 and 2006, as well as Landsat 8 OLI of 2016, using ENVI 4.5 and ArcGIS 10.1 and supervised classification method. Value of carbon stocks is obtained from the equation C = B ×% C (0.47), by predicting biomass on each type of carbon pool using allometric equations, which D2,62 ρ B = 0.11, B = exp {-2.134 + 2.530 × ln (D)}, B = 0.281 D2,06, and B = 0.030 D2,13, where D (diameter at breast height of trees, cm) and ρ (wood density). The sampling technique used is stratified random sampling method which refers to the technique of each plot on land cover classes which are then converted to thehectares area. The results of the analysis show that (1) the land cover in the Mount Padang Region of Padang City in 1996 has forest area of 744.23 Ha (92.6%), mixed garden area of 39.44 Ha (4.9%), shrubs of 17, 92 Ha (2.2%), and the settlement area of 2.35 Ha (0.3%). 2006 forest cover an area of 696.84 Ha (87%), mixed garden area of 18.84 Ha (2%), shrubs covering 37.55 Ha (5%), and residential area of 50.71 ha (6%). 2016 forest cover an area of 533.50 Ha (66%), mixed garden covering an area of 69.14 Ha (9%),shrubs covering 119.81 Ha (15%), and residential area of 81.49 Ha (10%). (2) the carbon stock in 1996 amounted to 495,800.03 tons, in 2006 a number of 458,165.73 tons, and in 2016 a number of 369,223.00 tons. Over the last 20 years, as a result of land cover changes in carbon stocks in Padang Mountain Region has been reduced as much as 126,577.03 tons.

The objective of this article is to investigate the space-time dynamics of vegetation cover and land use and the Environmental State of the landscape regions of the southwestern portion of the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. The vegetation cover and land use maps were generated from the Landsat 5 satellite images from 1984, and Landsat 8 from 2013 in the SPRING software. Map quantifications and layouts were elaborated withArcGis. The regionalization and analysis of the environmental state of the landscape were made through a regional geoecological matrix. From the results obtained, it was verified that the anthropic uses in the period of study were expanded by 134.08% while the vegetal coverings were reduced by 21.66% and the water bodies by 39%. Pasture is the predominant land use in the region, 24.09% (31,335.86 km²), mainly occupying the flat and smooth wavy terrain. Forest cover totaled 66.36% (84,967.12 km2), being found mainly in forest fragments, in which the larger territorial dimensions are either protected by environmental legislation or located in indigenous lands. Eight landscape regions were delimited in the southwest portion of Mato Grosso, including the Paraguay River Depression, which presents the landscape with the highest percentage of anthropic uses, predominantly the Degraded Environmental State. It was concluded that there is a need to adopt land use practices that minimize the environmental degradation of landscape regions, considering that during the period under investigation, the expansion of anthropic uses, mainly Livestock, directly influenced the suppression of vegetation cover.
