The paper discusses the socio-communicative function of the engineer’s foreign language training in which content is based on materials relating to the latest global technological advances and understanding of the essence of production culture in different countries. It discusses the structure and content of foreign language training taking into account the potential of multilingualism, technical communication and metalinguistic competence. Foreign language training contributes to the formation of linguistic, communicative and metacognitive skills. It sets out the modern international requirements in an engineering university, identifies the contradictions and features of pedagogical forms, methods and tools, and sets out the content and structure of multilingualism, technical communication and metalinguistic competence. A methodology for the implementation of foreign language training in combination with multilingualism, technical communication and metalinguistic competence is proposed and proved through the realization of group international study trips. Here, the students showed an understanding of technologies in foreign languages and a metalinguistic awareness focusing on the cultural traditions of the region and local features of production. The article argues for a conscious approach to deeper linguistic knowledge, cultures of different countries and technologies with advanced language and communications requirements in the field of science and technology, combining linguistic and engineering thinking in the human mind for a more complete understanding of the essence and content of engineering education.

The article investigates the issues of the content of the foreign language training at technical universities. The authors analyze the goals and objectives as well as the requirements and the content of the postgraduate language training to identify some discrepancy, which prevents the university community from achieving the most effi cient outcomes in the training future researchers and engineers in terms of foreign language profi ciency. Based on the examples provided, the authors highlight the necessity to revise the curriculum in order to change its focus and the major components as well as to review the requirements for students at every stage of language learning. The authors do not propose the ready scenario and structure of the course, considering it as the exceptional privilege of each university. However, the model that they propose in the paper and the conclusions they make, might be taken by others as the ground for the course content design.

The educational space of a non-linguistic university makes it possible to conduct a purposeful process of forming the ecological worldview and culture of future specialists in the logic of their professional development. According to the authors, the eco-oriented content of teaching a foreign language can make a great contribution to the implementation of this mission due to the great general cultural and educational potential of this discipline. The paper offers a comprehensive theoretical substantiation of the problem under study, reveals the essence, structure and methodology of the ecological worldview formation of engineering students. The authors make an attempt to model the educational process on the basis of interactive pedagogical technologies, the use of which allows students of non-linguistic areas to solve communicative problems on the basis of environmental topics. The totality of data obtained as a result of the experimental work carried out by the authors confirms the effectiveness of students’ ecological worldview formation through the inclusion of environmental-oriented content in the system of language training at the university.

The article emphasizes the expediency of using national and ethnic media texts in the educational process intended to expand the linguistic knowledge of engineering students and acquire extra-linguistic knowledge about national and ethnic media. The authors propose an interactive technology for working with texts of foreign language national and ethnic media culture, contributing to the formation of foreign language national and ethnic media competence. An attempt has been made to determine the practical value of using national and ethnic media texts in the educational process in a multidisciplinary university. Its content is isomorphic to the types of upcoming professional activity, which, in turn, can contribute to the development of engineering students both the skills of practical knowledge of a foreign language and the skills of independent acquisition and use of new knowledge and skills in practice using ICT tools.

Abstract The majority of people who have experienced institutionalized education have found it extremely laborious, slow and a necessarily repetitive process. The authors of this paper focus on and present possibilities for making the teaching of a foreign language more effective through mind mapping: the implementation of neuro-linguistic knowledge and mind maps into the learning process.

AbstractIn an ever-increasing competitive academic setting, university students are striving for proficiency in their skills of foreign languages. This paper aims to highlight the significance of reading comprehension for students of English as a second language. Reading comprehension is a cognitive process, in other words, reading a text means processing and decoding it. Reading proficiency is linked to numerous aspects, such as age, cognitive processes, abilities, knowledge of the foreign language, etc. It goes without saying that the experience of reading a text, be it literary or non-literary, is more enjoyable without the need to constantly look up unknown words. This brief study also tries to show whether there is a direct connection between finding contentment in reading and comprehending the texts itself. Since reading is a key-skill verified in all major language exams, it is crucial for the ESL class, and not only, to include reading comprehension processes. Like any other skill, reading comprehension can be trained, as long as it is perceived as a procedure which requires the student’s commitment. Reading comprehension is a mechanism of phrase and concept identification, as well as of decoding meanings. Thus, this paper tries to emphasize the implications of reading comprehension and of teaching reading comprehension methods in the overall linguistic knowledge of ESL learners.
