[The final form of this paper was published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology.] The study involved student teachers enrolled in early childhood teaching at a teacher training institute in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Seventy-four students participated in flipped classroom activities during their first semester of study. Students were told to learn from online videos related to using image editing software in their own time and pace prior to the next class. When they met in class, they were asked to apply their recently acquired editing knowledge to edit an image of their own choice related to the theme of their group project. At the end of the activity, students were asked to complete an online questionnaire. It was found that students had rated all five questions relating to generic skills highly, with self-study skills rated the highest. They particularly enjoyed the flexibility of learning on their own time and pace as a benefit of the flipped classroom. Data collected from students’ project pages show they had used average of 3.22 editing features for the theme images for their project. Most groups had inserted text fol-lowed by using the filter function. It is possible that these two functions are more noticeable than other editing functions. In conclusion, students were able to apply their self-learnt knowledge in a real-life situation and they had also developed their generic skills via the flipped classroom pedagogy.

The flipped classroom is an instructional strategy that encourages students to undertake prior preparation for lessons, in particular through the use of online materials provided by their teachers. Empirical studies of the language classroom have supported the effectiveness of this strategy for language development. However, only a limited number of studies have been undertaken in this field, particularly when it comes to the Arab region. This current study therefore explores the application of the flipped classroom with Kuwaiti student teachers of the English language attending the College of Basic Education in Kuwait. It aims is to explore the pedagogical benefits for the development of writing skills, in particular the experiences and perceptions of learners. The study took place over a period of thirteen weeks during the first semester of the 2019 academic year. The participants were thirty EFL student teachers taking a course in advanced writing. The data collection employed both a questionnaire and semi-structures interviews. The findings revealed that students have a generally positive attitude towards the process of flipping the writing classroom. The results from the questionnaire suggested that the flipped classroom provides: (1) a more effective learning environment; (2) flexible paced learning capable of improving students’ writing strategies (in particular when planning and writing a thesis and topics sentences); and (3) enhancement of students’ motivation and interaction. However, the additional findings from the semi-structure interviews revealed a number of sociocultural and contextual factors with a potentially negative influence on learners’ interaction. This study consequently argues that this classroom transformation demands more than a simple addition of technology and out-of-classroom videos and activities, requiring a change in the way students view education.

In a teacher education institute in Malaysia, blended learning is considered as a strategic and effective learning instruction with unique features to help improve student-teacher's discussion skills, improve their communities of practice, and achieve their course purposes. One of the tools of blended learning is flipped classroom. Flipped classroom should be implemented especially among student teachers. The definition of flipped classroom was explained in detail, and furthermore, flipped classroom activities are based on social and cognitive constructivist theory that is suitable to be implemented in teacher education institutions in Malaysia because it is student-centered and involved students actively during the learning process. A research done in one of the teacher education institutions was discussed to find out the effect of flipped classroom in achievement history test and motivation among the 20 student teachers who enrolled for Early European History until 21st Century as one of their major papers.

Flipped classroom enables students to learn new content online by watching video lectures outside the classroom independently with teachers offering more personalized guidance and interaction with students. This study tried to depict an effort of initiating flipped classroom to form the 4Cs among the English Student-Teachers. The aims of this study were to portray the process of initiating flipped classroom, the obstacles, and the students’ 4Cs reflection in the flipped classroom. The study involved four lecturers as collaborators in lesson study of an English Teaching Media subject. The instruments used were observation, interview, and document analysis. In conducting the flipped class, Schoology was utilized. The results showed that, in initiating a flipped class, the lecturers should be really creative in creating the video lectures and other classroom activities as a preclusion to boredom. Besides, the results also denoted emerging capacity of the students’ 4Cs during on line and offline class. Moreover, the lecturers considered flipped classroom as a breakthrough that enables them to have a closer look on the students individually.  Nonetheless, the newness of flipped classroom brings about intricacy, since the lecturers should be able to manage online and offline class simultaneously.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the implementation of a metavisual strategy for students to revise and self-regulate concepts arising in a study of a chemical reaction between ions. For this purpose, two chemistry education undergraduate students at a Brazilian public university carried out an investigative activity, involving metavisual steps, to revise explanatory models at the submicro level. Students were given a problem, namely a reaction between ions drawn from a real-life situation and were provided with clay to construct an explanatory model of the submicro level for the initial and final stages of the reaction. The students were asked to compare their clay model with an example of a scientifically correct figure of the submicro level of the reaction generated by the researchers. At this stage students were given the option to reconstruct their model. Data were captured via photographs of the clay models and students’ verbal discussions as they proceeded through the activity. The findings reveal evidence of self-regulation of mental models at the submicro level, from the interaction of prior knowledge, chemical diagrams and discussions and reflections by the pair of students. Difficulties regarding chemical formulae were also observed in relation to the symbolic level. Finally, there are implications for teaching chemistry, since teachers in training need to experience metavisual strategies for future application in their classrooms.
