This article highlights an innovative take on the jigsaw format, an inclusive and cooperative active learning strategy, implemented in an upper-level engineering elective course. After students complete the usual two steps of the jigsaw method—first gaining mastery in “expert groups” and then collaboratively teaching their peers in “jigsaw groups”—they then complete a third step in their jigsaw groups, in which they work together on an authentic design problem, offering a practical take on applying course content. This activity was implemented in three courses offered both in person and remotely (online only). We share how this innovation can promote learning, problem-solving, perspective sharing, and teamwork in contexts with students from different backgrounds and levels of experience.

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of different methods by comparing the academic achievement levels of jigsaw groups in the subjects they are experts in and in those they are not experts in. The sample of the study, which was carried out with a pretest posttest experimental design without a control group, consisted of 24 middle school students, 15 boys and 9 girls. A 20-question “science, technology and society achievement test” was used as the data collection tool. The test included 5 questions about each of the 4 topics of expertise assigned to the groups. The achievement that had a reliability coefficient of 0.85 was applied in the jigsaw groups as the pretest and the posttest. Since the data did not show a normal distribution, Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Kruskal-Wallis test were used for the analyses. In the analysis, the Mann-Whitney U test with Bonferroni correction was used to determine which groups had significant differences. The results showed that using the jigsaw II method increased the academic achievement of the students in all dimensions of the test. However, a significant difference was found between the success levels of the jigsaw groups in the dimensions of the test. This result showed that students are more successful in their assigned subjects than other subjects.

Background: The Jigsaw method is a form of cooperative learning, in which students are actively involved in the teaching-learning process that improves the long-term retention of acquired knowledge. Aims and Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge acquired by students using the Jigsaw learning method in Internal Medicine. Materials and Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted with 100 students. The acute coronary syndrome was taken for 1 h as a didactic lecture, and a pre-test was conducted. The students were divided into five groups and were put for the intervention “Jigsaw.” The pre- and post-test were conducted, and feedback was collected from the students. Paired t-test was used to perform analysis of pre- and post-test. Feedback evaluation was done by a 5-point Liker scale. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant, and the data were analyzed using CoGuide software. Results: The mean pre-test score was 8.44 ± 2.33 ranged (3–14) and the mean post-test score was 11.03 ± 2.07 (ranged 6–15). The difference of 2.39 (95% CI: 2.19–2.59) increase in marks post-test after the Jigsaw method was statistically significant (P<0.001). The satisfaction level was 50–55% on the Likert scale based on the questionnaire given. There was a significant improvement in the post-test scores of the students after Jigsaw. Conclusion: The Jigsaw method improved knowledge in the short-term by engaging students in group work and motivation to learn. Overall response based on the questionnaire about the Jigsaw method was positive.

The Covid-19 pandemic has triggered a universal disruption over the past year, and has caused unforeseen and formidable changes, but simultaneously has also enthused a digital transformation for educational institutions of all levels. With the upsurge in the usage of digital technologies, some potential caveats should be addressed, in particular, the speculative effective methods, course design and structure. A prodigious deal of reappraising and reimagining the philosophy of what is deemed to be the most familiar is imperative, not only to promote student-centred learning, but also encourage online engagement. Considering the suspension of all face-to-face classes due to the rapid spread of the global pandemic, the purpose of this study was to assess the usability and adoption of the jigsaw method on the web-based platform, Microsoft (MS) Teams for both synchronous and asynchronous teaching and learning. A pre-experimental research design was utilised with one post-test dataset obtained from the post-experiment learning analytics. Subsequently, the usability and adoption of the jigsaw method in MS Teams were evaluated based on the reciprocity of students’ responses towards the design. It is postulated that MS Teams stand out as a promising technological tool to facilitate the integration of the jigsaw method into an online learning environment. It advocates better students engagement and collaboration, and thus leads to the positive impact on students’ performance and enhanced comprehension of course content, specifically the availability of customized MS Teams features; channel and synchronous chat, which are recommended to support an engaged learning ecology.

Abstract Background Due to the progress in COVID-19, education has undergone a huge change all around the world, leading all universities to move towards distance learning. In this context, the majority of instructors tend to make use of the educational methods that maintain and improve students’ motivation and, consequently, promote their academic performance. This study aimed to compare the effects of synchronous online class and the combination of flipped and jigsaw methods on students’ academic motivation. Methods This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 84 BSc nursing students who had entered Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in two different years. One group was educated in a synchronous online class, while the other group was educated using a combination of flipped and jigsaw methods. Both classes were enrolled in online classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The participants’ academic motivation was evaluated using Harter’s Academic Motivation Scale. Results The results revealed no significant difference in the intrinsic and extrinsic dimensions of academic motivation in the synchronous online class group before and after the intervention. However, a significant increase was observed in the mean scores of academic motivation (p = 0.002) and its intrinsic (p = 0.003) and extrinsic (p = 0.031) dimensions in the flipped-jigsaw method group after the intervention. Moreover, the mean scores of academic motivation (p = 0.007) and its intrinsic (p = 0.038) and extrinsic (p = 0.010) dimensions were significantly higher in the flipped-jigsaw method group compared to the synchronous online class group after the intervention. Conclusions Since the COVID-19 pandemic has led educational institutions to use virtual education methods, the combination of flipped and jigsaw methods may improve students’ academic motivation in distance learning.
