Background: Problem based learning (PBL) has made major impact on curricular designing and practice in medical education for the last forty years. Incorporation of PBL approach in medical education has been a challenge and opportunity for both educationists on how to impart change and medical teachers on how to internalise the change. Objectives: This paper aimed to investigate experiences, achievement and responses of medical teachers at B. P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), Nepal. Materials and methods: There were 25 heterogeneous groups of teachers, majority of them were entry level. Pre- and Post- test question were taken from various topics relevant to PBL such as learning strategy and principles of adult learning, PBL practice at BPKIHS, tutorial session and role of a tutor, making resource session interactive, designing PBL problems, planning educational objectives in PBL, formulation of problem for PBL. In addition to it participants' perception on development and dissemination of PBL manual and effectiveness of workshop were also included in the questionnaire. Results: There was significant gain in knowledge following the workshop (p<0.001). The perception of the teacher found quite relevant and useful for adopting new role as tutor. The respondent teachers noted that skills they learned during the training will be applicable to their job situation. They stressed for an additional training for reinforcement and update with new trends and tools in PBL. Conclusion: Therefore, such trainings for faculty development would be highly beneficial to inculcate new competencies in PBL. Earlier this year, I received a small grant from the Edinburgh University Development Trust Fund to determine the feasibility of formulating a major research project exploring the religious dimensions within the recent land resettlement programme in Zimbabwe. Since spirit mediums had played such an important role in the first Shona uprising in 1896–97 against colonial occu¬pation (the so-called First Chimurenga) (Parsons, 1985: 50-51) and again in the war of liberation between 1972 and 1979 (the Second Chimurenga) (Lan, 1985), I suspected that these central points of contact between the spirit world and the living communities would be affecting the sometimes militant invasions of white commercial farms that began sporadically in 1998, but became systematic after the constitutional referendum of February 2000. Under the terms of the grant, I went with my colleague, Tabona Shoko of the University of Zimbabwe, in July and August 2004, to two regions of Zimbabwe: Mount Darwin in the northeast, where recent activities by war veterans and spirit mediums had been reported, and to the Mberengwa District, where land resettlement programmes have been widespread. This article reports on my preliminary findings in Mount Darwin, where I sought to determine if evidence could be found to link the role of Traditional Religion, particularly through spirit mediums, to the current land redistribution programme, and, if so, whether increasing levels of political intolerance within Zimbabwean society could be blamed, in part at least, on these customary beliefs and practices

ABSTRACT Many people may not be aware of the extent of Kurt Kyser's collaboration with mineral exploration companies through applied research and the development of innovative exploration technologies, starting at the University of Saskatchewan and continuing through the Queen's Facility for Isotope Research. Applied collaborative, geoscientific, industry-academia research and development programs can yield technological innovations that can improve the mineral exploration discovery rates of economic mineral deposits. Alliances between exploration geoscientists and geoscientific researchers can benefit both parties, contributing to the pure and applied geoscientific knowledge base and the development of innovations in mineral exploration technology. Through a collaboration that spanned over three decades, we gained insight into the potential for economic uranium deposits around the world in Canada, Australia, USA, Finland, Russia, Gabon, Namibia, Botswana, South Africa, and Guyana. Kurt, his research team, postdoctoral fellows, and students developed technological innovations related to holistic basin analysis for economic mineral potential, isotopes in mineral exploration, and biogeochemical exploration, among others. In this paper, the business of mineral exploration is briefly described, and some examples of industry-academic collaboration innovations brought forward through Kurt's research are identified. Kurt was a masterful and capable knowledge broker, which is a key criterion for bringing new technologies to application—a grand, curious, credible, patient, and attentive communicator—whether talking about science, business, or life and with first ministers, senior technocrats, peers, board members, first nation peoples, exploration geologists, investors, students, citizens, or friends.

We agree with Taeusch and Heafitz in their letter to the editor (Pediatrics 57:977, June 1976) that total or near total parenteral nutrition can be given through needles placed in peripheral veins for weeks and even months. Whether one uses the "Usher" needles or the "butterfly" model, the success in maintaining infusions depends on the ability and availability of the operator. In the NICC at the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, neonatal nurses have had the responsibility of maintaining peripheral intravenous infusions in both medical and surgical infants for nearly ten years, involving several thousand neonates referred for critical care.

Abstract Background Commencing lifelong antiretroviral therapy (ART) immediately following HIV diagnosis (Option B+), has greatly improved maternal-infant health. Thus, large and increasing numbers of HIV-infected women are on ART during pregnancy, a situation concurrently increasing numbers of HIV-exposed-uninfected (HEU) infants. Compared to their HIV-unexposed-uninfected (HUU) counterparts, HEU infants show higher rates of adverse birth outcomes, mortality, infectious/non-communicable diseases including impaired growth and neurocognitive development. There is an urgent need to understand the impact of HIV and early life ART exposures, immune-metabolic dysregulation, comorbidities and environmental confounders on adverse paediatric outcomes. Methods Six hundred (600) HIV-infected and 600 HIV-uninfected pregnant women ≥20 weeks of gestation will be enrolled from four primary health centres in high density residential areas of Harare. Participants will be followed up as mother-infant-pairs at delivery, week(s) 1, 6, 10, 14, 24, 36, 48, 72 and 96 after birth. Clinical, socio-economic, nutritional and environmental data will be assessed for adverse birth outcomes, impaired growth, immune/neurodevelopment, vertical transmission of HIV, hepatitis-B/C viruses, cytomegalovirus and syphilis. Maternal urine, stool, plasma, cord blood, amniotic fluid, placenta and milk including infant plasma, dried blood spot and stool will be collected at enrolment and follow-up visits. The composite primary endpoint is stillbirth and infant mortality within the first two years of life in HEU versus HUU infants. Maternal mortality in HIV-infected versus -uninfected women is another primary outcome. Secondary endpoints include a range of maternal and infant outcomes. Sub-studies will address maternal stress and malnutrition, maternal-infant latent tuberculosis, Helicobacter pylori infections, immune-metabolomic dysregulation including gut, breast milk and amniotic fluid dysbiosis. Discussion The University of Zimbabwe-College of Health-Sciences-Birth-Cohort study will provide a comprehensive assessment of risk factors and biomarkers for HEU infants’ adverse outcomes. This will ultimately help developing strategies to mitigate effects of maternal HIV, early-life ART exposures and comorbidities on infants’ mortality and morbidity. RA Koster currently works as Associate Director of Bioanalytical Science at the LC–MS/MS department at PRA Health Sciences in the Laboratory in Assen, The Netherlands. He is responsible for the LC–MS/MS analytical method development and leads a team of method development analysts and scientists. As global microsampling specialist within PRA he is interested in all developments regarding microsampling and aims to continuously improve microsampling techniques. He has been working in the field of bioanalysis for 19 years, in which he performed and supervised numerous analytical method developments using LC–MS/MS. He started his career in 2001 at Pharma Bio-Research (before it was acquired by PRA) as an LC–MS/MS analyst. In 2005, he moved to the University Medical Center Groningen where he focused on the development and validation of analytical methods for drugs and drugs of abuse in matrices like blood, plasma, hair, saliva, dried blood spots and volumetric absorptive microsampling with LC–MS/MS. In 2015 he obtained his PhD on the subject ‘The influence of the sample matrix on LC–MS/MS method development and analytical performance’. In 2017, he started as Senior Scientist at PRA Health Sciences and in 2019, he accepted his current role of Associate Director of Bioanalytical Science. He is a (co-)author of more than 35 publications.
