The purpose of this study is to reveal the objective conditions and characteristics of Islamic boarding school management as a model of community-based education in Bengkulu City. This study uses a qualitative approach, the method used is a single instrumental case study. The data collection process used (1) in-depth interviews, (2) participatory observation, and (3) documentation study. The data analysis technique is domain analysis by focusing on terms, semantic relationships, and the phrases they cover. The results and research findings show that Islamic boarding school management as a model of community-based education in Bengkulu City needs to be addressed regarding management according to good and correct management principles, which have been using full authority and top leader charisma. Given that Islamic boarding school is a type of community-based education, the application of management must pay attention to the aspects of management that apply to community-based education.   Keywords: management, community-based education, Islamic boarding school

Pesticides is chemical substances and other materials as well as microorganisms and viruses that are used to control various plant-disturbing organisms. Early public education about pesticides is an important element to avoid increasing exposure for farmers or workers in the spraying division of plant pests. In addition, the community has never carried out early detection and feels that they are already immune and are used to the pungent smell of pesticides. This service activity is carried out with the aim of implementing a community-based education program that facilitates the community in increasing knowledge about early detection and preventive efforts against the using of pesticides that do not meet the requirements in the application of Occupational Health and Safety (K3) principles in Gantarang Keke Village, Bantaeng Regency. Methods of implementation this community service consists of two stages, namely: 1) the preparation stage includes health counseling with the lecture method to the community of Gantarang Keke Village; 2) the implementation stage includes the implementation of the implementation program in the form of implementing K3 correctly and safely. The results show that with education carried out through counseling about the application of K3 to the people of Gantarang Keke Village, they begin to understand about the safe and correct using of pesticides, as well as the use of Personal Protective Equipment in accordance with the requirements in K3 principles.

Abstract Falls are a leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults. Older adult participation in community-based falls prevention programs can significantly reduce falls risk, however, identifying and referring individuals to appropriate programs can be challenging. Through Administration for Community Living (ACL) funding, we have developed a comprehensive Dartmouth Falls Prevention Training Program for healthcare and community based organizations that includes (1) Falls screening in primary care; (2) “Balance Days”, a community-based education and balance screening event encompassing falls risk stratification and coaching into programs; (3) Instructor Training for Tai Ji Quan: Moving for Better Balance®, a highly effective falls prevention program; and (4) Implementation Training, a research informed workshop shown to enhance community-based program sustainability through participant retention. We will share strategies for sustainable collaborations between primary care and CBOs to reach at-risk individuals and improve lives and decrease costs associated with falls.

Abstract The Utah Geriatric Education Consortium provides community-based education about Age-Friendly Health Care and Dementia-Friendly Communities targeted towards informal and professional caregivers. As such, we have collaborated with our community partners to host a series of “Fireside Chats”. Since March of 2020, we have hosted 17 Fireside Chats. Our attendance has exceeded our expectations, with over 500 attendees (average of 32 attendees per session). The professional attendees come from a variety of interdisciplinary backgrounds including nursing, medicine, public health, allied health, aging services, and health and long-term care administration. Our non-professional attendees include family caregivers, students, and older adults in the community. This session will address: a) the logistical steps we took (and lessons learned) as we “pivoted” our Fireside Chats into a virtual video-conference format, b) how we redesigned the curriculum to address topics related to COVID-19, and c) will review our evaluation feedback.

This article describes the development of madrasah through trust-building at MI Ma'arif NU Teluk Purwokerto Selatan. Like one of the Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia, Madrasah has a strategic role in achieving national education goals. In its development, especially Madrasah Ibtidaiyyah, the quantity of private madrasah is higher than that of the public madrasah. It impacts the madrasah's existence, which will depend heavily on the community as the primary stakeholder and madrasah as a concrete form of community-based education. For this reason, it is necessary to have active community participation in developing competitive and quality madrasah, among others, through building trust. This research is qualitative-descriptive with a case study approach—data collection techniques using interviews, observation, and documentation. The results indicated that the development of MI Ma'arif NU Teluk through trust-building was used in several stages, namely through the development of the character of figures who were able to become role models for the community. The belief formed by these figures will stick in a person's memory and become a role model in his life. Trust building is also built through improving the quality of the madrasah, namely the madrasah program. The madrasah program is an effective means of creating external trust in madrasah. The madrasah program is in the national curriculum and the local content curriculum, simultaneously implemented at MI Ma'arif NU Teluk.

Abstract Background Community-based education, as an effective approach to strengthen nurses’ skills in response to society’s problems and needs has increased in nursing education programs. The aim of this study was to review the effect of community-based education on nursing students’ skills. Methods For this systematic review, ProQuest, EMBASE, Scopus, PubMed/ MEDLINE, Cochran Library, Web of Science, CINAHL and Google Scholar were searched up to February 2021. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT). Seventeen studies were included in this systematic review. Inclusion criteria included articles published in English and were original articles. Results In all studies, undergraduate nursing students’ skills were improved by participation in a community-based education program. Community-based education enhances professional skills, communication skills, self-confidence, knowledge and awareness, and critical thinking skills and teamwork skills in undergraduate nursing students. Conclusions Community-based education should be used as an effective and practical method of training capable nurses to meet the changing needs of society, to improve nurses ‘skills and empower them to address problems in society.

AbstractSocial capital strengthens emerging adults’ ability to reach life goals, but little is known about how peers and near-peers (slightly older and/or more experienced peers who serve in mentorship or coaching roles) support social capital development especially among young people of color. To address this gap, the current study examined how social capital derived from peers and near-peers contributes to emerging adults’ ability to actively mobilize social capital in pursuit of their education or career goals (i.e., self-initiated social capital) and, in turn, their education and career outcomes. A total of 841 emerging adults who participated in one of five community-based education and/or workforce support programs were surveyed (72% female; Mage = 20.1, SD = 1.84; 35% Latinx, 30% Black, 19% Asian, 16% Other). Peer social capital was indirectly associated with outcomes (i.e., progress towards education/career goals, commitment to paying-it-forward, collective efficacy to change systems) via greater self-initiated social capital, whereas near-peer social capital was both directly and indirectly associated with outcomes. The mechanisms by which peer and near-peer social capital support emerging adults as they work towards their goals may differ and have important program implications.
