Abstract. The construction of large reservoirs results in the formation of tributary bays, and tributary bays are inevitably influenced by the backwater jacking and intrusion of the main reservoir. The hydrodynamic conditions and the environmental factors of tributary bays exhibit complex distribution characteristics and eutrophication occur frequently. Thus, exploring the distribution and evolution of the hydrodynamic and water environment characteristics of tributary bays in response to backwater jacking and intrusion is the key to solving eutrophication and other problems relevant to water environment. In this paper, a typical tributary bay (Tangxi River) of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) was selected to study the hydrodynamic and environmental characteristics of the tributary bay influenced by the jacking and intrusion of the main reservoir. The flow field, water temperature and water quality of the Tangxi River were simulated using the hydrodynamic and quality model CE-QUAL-W2, and the eutrophication status of the tributary bay was also evaluated. The results showed that the main reservoir had different effects on its tributary bay in each month. The tributary bay was mainly affected by backwater jacking of the main reservoir when the water level dropped and by intrusion of the main reservoir when the water level rose. An obvious quality concentration boundary existed in the tributary bay, which was basically consistent with the regional boundary in the flow field. The flow field and water quality on both sides of the boundary were quite different. The results of this study can help us figure out how the backwater jacking and intrusion of the main reservoir influence the hydrodynamic and water environment characteristics of the tributary bay and provide guidance for water environment protection in the tributary bays.

Based on the water quality investigation data in December of 2010, the water environment quality of Jilongshan sea area in Zhanjiang in winter was assessed using single water quality parameter model, integrated water quality index model, organic pollution index model and eutrophication assessment model. The results show that the key pollutants are dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and chemical oxygen demand (CODmn), with their average concentrations of 1.39 and 3.74mg/L, respectively. And the averages of their single parameter pollution index are 3.48 and 0.93. Jilongshan sea area is seriously polluted by DIN. None of the sampling stations are able to meet the third-rate seawater standard in the sea area. From the evaluation results, the N/P ratio is higher than Redfield ratio. DIN is the most important contribution factor to the eutrophication. The averages of single parameter pollution index, integrated water quality index, organic pollution index and eutrophication index are 1.09, 2.58, 3.78 and 22.5, respectively. Most parts of Jilongshan sea area are polluted moderately. According to the evaluation mode of organic pollution and eutrophication index, the organic pollution degree reaches the forth level and the eutrophication degree in Jilongshan sea area is very serious.

The quality of environmental waters such as rivers is often deteriorated by various kinds of trace and unidentified chemicals despite the recent development of sewage systems and wastewater treatment technologies. In addition to contamination by particular toxicants, complex toxicity due to multi-component chemicals could be much more serious. The environmental situation in bodies of water in Japan led us to apply bioassays for monitoring the water quality of environmental waters in order to express the direct and potential toxicity to human beings and ecosystems rather than determinating concentrations of particular chemicals. However, problems arose from the fact that bioassays for pharmaceutical purposes generally required complicated, time-consuming, expert procedures. Also, a methodology for feedback of the resultant toxicity data to water environment management has not been established yet. To this end, we developed a novel bioassay based on the low-density lipoprotein (LDL) uptake activity of human hepatoblastoma cells. The assay enabled us to directly detect the toxicity of environmental waters within 4 hours of exposure. This is a significantly quick and easy procedure as compared to that of conventional bioassays. The toxicity data for 255 selected chemicals and environmental waters obtained by this method were organized by a mathematical equation in order to make those data much more effectively and practically useful to the management of environmental waters. Our methodology represents a promising example of applying bioassays to monitor environmental water quality and generating potential solutions to the toxicity problems encountered.

Due to the recent excessive pursuit of rapid economic development in China, the cultural heritage resources have been gradually destroyed. This paper proposes cultural recovery and ecological remediation patterns, and adopts virtual reality (VR) technology to evaluate the visual aesthetic effect of the restored landscape. The results show that: (1) the average vegetation coverage increased, providing data support for remediation design evaluation; and (2) the fixation counts and average saccade counts of the subjects increased after the remediation design, indicating that the restored cultural landscape reduced visual fatigue and provided a better visual aesthetic experience. Furthermore, the comparative analysis of the quality of the water environment shows that the remediation design project improved the ecological environment quality of the relics area. The results of this study will contribute to rural revitalization in minority areas in southwest China.

A Lake Multi-biotic Integrity Index (LMII) for the China’s second largest interior lake (Dongting Lake) was developed to assess the water quality status using algal and macroinvertebrate metrics. Algae and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were sampled at 10 sections across 3 subregions of Dongting Lake. We used a stepwise process to evaluate properties of candidate metrics and selected ten for the LMII: Pampean diatom index, diatom quotient, trophic diatom index, relative abundance diatoms, Margalef index of algae, percent sensitive diatoms, % facultative individuals, % Chironomidae individuals, % predators individuals, and total number of macroinvertebrate taxa. We then tested the accuracy and feasibility of the LMII by comparing the correlation with physical-chemical parameters. Evaluation of the LMII showed that it discriminated well between reference and impaired sections and was strongly related to the major chemical and physical stressors (r = 0.766, P<0.001). The re-scored results from the 10 sections showed that the water quality of western Dongting Lake was good, while that of southern Dongting Lake was relatively good and whereas that of eastern Dongting Lake was poor. The discriminatory biocriteria of the LMII are suitable for the assessment of the water quality of Dongting Lake. Additionally, more metrics belonging to habitat, hydrology, physics and chemistry should be considered into the LMII, so as to establish comprehensive assessment system which can reflect the community structure of aquatic organisms, physical and chemical characteristics of water environment, human activities, and so on.

A river water quality spatial profile has a diverse pattern of variation over different climatic regions. To comprehend this phenomenon, our study evaluated the spatial scale variation of the Water Quality Index (WQI). The study was carried out over four main climatic classes in Asia based on the Koppen-Geiger climate classification system: tropical, temperate, cold, and arid. The one-dimensional surface water quality model, QUAL2Kw was selected and compared for water quality simulations. Calibration and validation were separately performed for the model predictions over different climate classes. The accuracy of the water quality model was assessed using different statistical analyses. The spatial profile of WQI was calculated using model predictions based on dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), nitrate (NO3), and pH. The results showed that there is a smaller longitudinal variation of WQI in the cold climatic regions than other regions, which does not change the status of WQI. Streams from arid, temperate, and tropical climatic regions show a decreasing trend of DO with respect to the longitudinal profiles of main river flows. Since this study found that each climate zone has the different impact on DO dynamics such as reaeration rate, reoxygenation, and oxygen solubility. The outcomes obtained in this study are expected to provide the impetus for developing a strategy for the viable improvement of the water environment.

Namibia has been striving to improve the rural poor quality of life through policies and schemes in line with the national development framework (Vision 2030). Sustained food production is one of the major initiatives, as it constitutes as basic livelihood activity but also augments rural income and livelihood. Apart from that, it is also a citizen's critical need. Though significant the schemes are, their contribution to household income and their role in improvement of livelihood is never taken up and exploration done. Adopting the DFID sustainable livelihood assessment framework, this chapter uses direct observations and primary data to present an assessment of the contribution of selected agricultural schemes.
