The Use of Technology in the ‘Third Age’: Findings from the Effects of Digital Technology on Seniors (EDITS) Project

Twenty-one seniors (aged 60+) were interviewedabout their use of digital technology. Grounded theoryand Key Point analysis were used to identify severalareas where these tools have become embedded intothe lives of seniors. These include informationseeking, news media, library usage, and readingpreferences.Vingt et un aînés (âgés de 60 ans et plus) ont étéinterrogés sur leur utilisation des technologiesnumériques. Nous avons utilisé la théorie ancréedans les données empiriques et l’analyse de point clépour identifier plusieurs domaines dans lesquels cesoutils se sont intégrés dans la vie des aînés. Ceux-cicomprennent la recherche d’information, lesnouvelles, l’utilisation de la bibliothèque et lespréférences de lecture.

It is well known that the earth population is aging; in the forthcoming decades, a so called “silver tsunami” is expected. By 2050 the forecasted population aged 65 years or more, is expected to be globally about 2 billion. Simultaneously, a “technological tsunami” related to advances in digital technology and especially mobile telephony and the internet and accompanied by cloud computing and the Internet of Things has appeared. In this article the role of mobile technologies towards the quality of life improvement for the aged population is investigated in an effort to answer the question: “will these two tsunamis operate in a synergistic manner for the benefit of the third age?”

The article tackles the problem of teaching foreign languages to seniors. The general trends in FL education for the third-age learners are outlined. The institutions in which seniors can study foreign languages in Poland are enumerated. The psychological, physiological, methodological and social peculiarities of teaching a foreign language to the third agers are analyzed. Special emphasis is laid upon educational needs of the Third Age learners. Some language learning strategies which help seniors’ foreign language learning are suggested.

This study aims to use information technology, uncertainty or moderation duties and interactions between task uncertainty with the use of information technology to end user computing satisfaction. In this study used 70 respondents who actively use computers and working with several companies banking on the city of Padang. The data used are the primary data obtained through questionnaires. The study used three types of variables, the first is the independent variable, namely the utilization of information technology, both moderating variables, namely the uncertainty of the task, the third is the dependent variable is satisfaction of end user computing. The stages of hypothesis testing is done by using a regression model of moderating and statistical t-test. Based on the results of testing the first hypothesis (HI) was found to significantly influence the utilization of information technology to the satisfaction of end user computing. The second hypothesis (H2) testing results found that task uncertainty did not significantly influence the end user computing satisfaction. The third hypothesis (H3) testing found that the interaction or moderation between the use of technology with task uncertainty no significant effect on end user computing satisfaction.

AbstractIn recent years have seen increasing percentage of the elderly in the overall population. This has driven the attention to the lifestyle factors that influence the health and quality of life of this social group, including their nutrition and physical activity. Universities of the Third Age (U3A) are a valuable platform for the dissemination and broadening of the knowledge related to these topics. The nutritional habits of 61 U3A students in Poznań were evaluated on the basis of a modified KomPAN questionnaire. Their nutritional status was determined using the body mass index (BMI) and waist to hip ratio (WHR) indices. Nearly half of the respondents were overweight and 16% had first degree obesity. The WHR index in women was on average 0.8, while in men it was 1.01. Only 13% of the students declared regular eating, with 60% consuming 4-5 meals a day. Women were found to eat snacks between meals more often than men. It was also found that the majority of the elderly do not add salt to ready meals or sweeten beverages with sugars. Taking into account the observed nutritional problems and the occurrence of improper eating habits of the elderly, it is recommended to continue the education on the prevention of common diet-related diseased.

This study aims to document the extent to which the use of digital technology enhances and extends high school teachers’ problem-solving strategies when framing their teaching scenarios. The participants systematically relied on online developments such as Wikipedia to contextualize problem statements or to review involved concepts. Likewise, they activated GeoGebra’s affordances to construct and explore dynamic models of tasks. The Apollonius problem is used to illustrate and discuss how the participants contextualized the task and relied on technology affordances to construct and explore problems’ dynamic models. As a result, they exhibited and extended the domain of several problem-solving strategies including the use of simpler cases, dragging orderly objects, measuring objects attributes, and finding loci of some objects that shaped their approached to reasoning and solve problems.
