Concerning the development and the opportunities provided by new technologies and changes in social reality, the task of educational staff is to raise and educate responsible participants in the learning process adaptable to new situations of learning in the digital age, the age of vast information, and therefore be prepared for life-long learning. As school librarians are recognised as educated and essential collaborators in this task, which is common to all educational staff, it is necessary to operationalise their role in the educational system in Croatia and encourage development of new curricula. This paper proposes a framework for a programme, which has a starting point in new subject curricula and extra-curricula topics. It starts from the constructivist approach of teaching where at the core are students who do not memorize facts but are capable of solving problems through active research and interaction with information and thus creating new knowledge. This approach encourages students to be critical thinkers, express themselves freely, be creative and strengthen their confidence in their quest to acquire competencies that develop the proposed framework for a library programme in information and media literacy education, and promoting reading.

School librarians have a unique, unprecedented, and unparalleled opportunity to affirm their role in students’ use of basic literacy skills – reading and writing – while highlighting their relatively new role, guiding students through the acquisition of information through multiple modes of communication with new technologies. School librarians can create and facilitate opportunities for students to enhance their learning and become multiliterate. These learning opportunities and a focus on “core” literacies shed a much needed spotlight on the important role and influence of the school librarian on overall academic achievement and the acquisition of multiliteracy skills that have become a necessity in a changing technological and global environment. This article isbased on a presentation given at the International Association of School Librarians Conference in Doha, Qatar (2012), the goals of which were to share an overview of the multiliteracies concept, suggest strategies for facilitating literacy in the school library and classroom, and share professional resources for continued learning and the integration of multiliteracies across the curriculum.

In most countries, the introduction of computer technology in schools has seen the role of school libraries transformed. Adoption of new technologies are now seen to be enhancing school libraries’ ability to perform their mission, vision and role, that is, providing learners access to a wide range of reading material to enable them to acquire knowledge as well as ability to read books online. This paper will address the impact computer technology is having on rural school learners at Katsande Primary School. It will explain how embracing of computer technology has influenced learners concerning achieving quality education.

The list of multiple tasks expected from a school librarian include a wide range of activities. Activity of crucial importance is advocating and argumentation how important is the development of basic literacy skills. The role of school librarians is unavoidable in this process. This presentation will show an example of school library practice and focus on the role of school librarian as designer, provider and researcher in the case study research at the school level. This research was done as an activity during international Erasmus+ project called RECEPTION (Role of Early Childhood Education in positive Transition/Introduction Outcomes for New pupils).

Exploring the practices of teacher librarians in other countries fosters new knowledge, contributing to global communities of practice. The need to equip today’s youth with complex 21st century skills has served as a catalyst for change in the traditional practices of school librarians all over the world. It is this necessary change that led to questions regarding school library practices at an international level and to the need to explore school librarianship on a global level. This research study explores ways program design grounded in cultural understanding, experiences, and ways of knowing the world, are applied by practicing school librarians in Brazil, Russia, and Belize.

This research examined the state-of-the-art of research in school librarianship. Similar trends from previous research were confirmed: research in school librarianship is published in two major journals -- School Library (Media) Research and School Libraries Worldwide. Almost 80% of the research was carried out in the United States. There is a small core group of researchers working in the area of school librarianship. About half of all research is by a single author. The main themes from the research included collaboration between teachers and school librarian, technology integration, the instructional role of school librarians, professional development, analysis of materials, information literacy instruction, practices and assessment, hiring, professional development and retention of school librarians, use of multimedia resources, role of school librarians in the provision of health information, motivation of students, and research in other parts of the world. Frameworks (Aharony, 2011; Koufogiannakis, Slater & Crumley, 2005; Mardis, 2011) were incomplete and the authors present a new framework for categorizing school library research, in particular, but also LIS research, in general.

International guidelines for school libraries and school librarians exist. However, the role of professional library associations in school librarian education has been largely overlooked. This exploratory study examines the role of professional library associations in Brazil, Honduras, Nepal, and the United States (specifically California) relative to school librarian pre-service education and in-service professional development. The associations are analyzed in light of communities of practice and the contingency theory of socialization. The findings demonstrate how professional library associations provide culturally relevant professional development that melds professional expertise and socialization.

School librarians are not only managers of the school libraries, they are also educators, administrators, teaching consultants, information specialists, and information literacy teachers, etc. Unfortunately, in many countries, especially in Asia, there has always been a lack of understanding on the parts of the classroom teachers and school administration about the role of the school librarians in the public school system. Meanwhile, many novice school librarians do not have a clear understanding of the potential contributions of the school library programmes to students’ overall development process and their achievement, as well as their contributions to students’ overall enquiry-based learning as a whole. Furthermore, very little research is available on the attitudes and self-perceptions of the school librarians regarding their teaching role, in relation to enquiry-based learning for comparison. The study is designed to examine, explore and compare how school librarians in function between Hong Kong, Japan, Shanghai, South Korea, and Taipei, as well as how perceive their own status within the school community, by looking at their relationships with their principals and other classroom teachers.

This research was aimed to find out; 1) to know implementation of madrasah basedmanagement, 2) impact of implemntation of madrasah based management, 3) supportand handicap factor of madrasah based management implementation in MTs ArRisalah Kepil Wonosobo. This research used a qualitative approach because qualitativeresearch try to describe a reality with the suitable fact. Subject of research such asheadmaster, teacher, school commitee, student and the stakeholders. Technique of datacollection used observation, interview, and study of document. And the data analysisused the interactive analysis of miles and huberman. Result of research showed thatimplementation of madrasah based management included management of curricullumand teaching, management of educator and education staff, management of financing andbudgeting, and management of social realtionship. Impact of school based managementimplemntation influenced toward proccess of teaching learning activities, policy of theheadmaster of MTs Ar Risalah became a starting point in determining a progress ofinstitution. Factor of support in Madrasah based management implementation such ascentral role of headmaster in making policy that corelated with learning, educational staff,infratsructure, role of school commitee and participation of society. Then the handicapfactor as below the weak of managerial skill, minimum of infrastructure and unsuitableof educator competence

How can a school library shorten the distance between institutions, professionals, students and teaching methods? How can a Teacher Librarian and a School Libraries Inter-district Coordinator cooperate to conceptualize new strategies, expand students’ learning experiences and reinforcing their involvement with the school library? How important is it for students to engage in different reading activities with partners from other European countries? How can a “Reading Plus Project” evolve to a “National Merit Idea Project” and to a “Comenius Project”, where the role of the school library as an open door to intercultural competences is emphasized? How can we take advantage of the new technologies to modernize the school library and promote digital literacy? With this paper we aim to give an example of good practices in school libraries in Portugal, hopefully giving inspiration to others to overcome barriers inside and outside their country.

ResumoA pesquisa versa sobre o papel dos(as) bibliotecários(as) escolares com relação às questões de gênero e sexualidade. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória e levantamento bibliográfico da literatura científica das duas áreas. Como fundamentação conceitual, abordaram-se os conceitos de biblioteca e bibliotecário(a) escolar, bem como os conceitos de gênero e sexualidade. Buscou-se reunir e confrontar as literaturas a fim de estabelecer uma ligação entre conceitos. Nas considerações finais, enfatiza-se a importância do papel do(a) bibliotecário(a) no processo de ensino-aprendizagem das questões que envolvem a temática de gênero e sexualidade na escola. Abstract: The research deals with the role of school librarians in relation to issues of gender and sexuality. It is an exploratory research and bibliographical survey of the scientific literature of the two areas. As conceptual foundation, the concepts of library and school library, as well as the concepts of gender and sexuality were approached. It sought to gather and confront literatures in order to establish a connection between concepts. In the final considerations, the importance of the role of the librarian in the teaching-learning process of issues involving the theme of gender and sexuality in the school is emphasized.
