This paper presents a novel technique based on Cuckoo Search Algorithm (CSA) for enhancing the performance of multiline transmission network to reduce congestion in transmission line to huge level. Optimal location selection of IPFC is done using subtracting line utilization factor (SLUF) and CSA-based optimal tuning. The multi objective function consists of real power loss, security margin, bus voltage limit violation and capacity of installed IPFC. The multi objective function is tuned by CSA and the optimal location for minimizing transmission line congestion is obtained. The simulation is performed using MATLAB for IEEE 30-bus test system. The performance of CSA has been considered for various loading conditions. Results shows that the proposed CSA technique performs better by optimal location of IPFC while maintaining power system performance

The furniture industry is growing to a great extent in Bangladesh. Many market researchers believe that the industry has enormous potentiality. However, the expansion of this industry may face complexities within a few years. Due to the wrong selection of facilities, many organizations failed to earn profit as expected. It also needs a large investment. Selecting a suitable place for a new facility is going to be the biggest question of upcoming years. This study aimed to analyze Bangladesh’s furniture industry, address the facility location problem, and provide a constructive solution to the decision-makers. In this study, seven criteria were considered: availability of raw materials, transportations, skilled labor, proximity to customers, energy availability, economic zone facility, and environmental impact, and five ideal locations or alternatives: Khulna, Chattogram, Bogura, Gazipur, and Manikganj. Thirty-four experts took part in the survey to analyze the significant criteria for selecting a furniture industry’s facility location and alternatives or potential locations for the facility. The Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Fuzzy AHP methods (FAHP), two MCDM techniques, were used to analyze the data set. A sensitivity analysis was done to determine the model’s robustness for any critical changes in the real world. The result showed that ‘energy availability is the most significant criterion to select a facility location for the furniture industry, where it got 35.1% criteria weight in AHP and 33.9% in FAHP. ‘Chattogram’ was selected as the most suitable place containing 33.74% normalized weight in AHP and 33.81% normalized weight in FAHP.

Multi-site selection is a hot research issue for equipment manufacturing enterprises. With the development of smart industry, equipment manufacturing enterprises have entered the era of personalized and small batch manufacturing. Enterprises want to better meet customer needs and win competition, they must carry out scientific factory planning and site selection, so as to ensure quick response to the market. Based on this, this paper proposes a two-stage location selection model. Firstly, the method uses fuzzy numbers to express the demand size of demand points. Secondly, the distance factor is used as a criterion to select the candidate manufacturing bases with sufficient available resources. Next, the location model of enterprise manufacturing base is established which the goal of maximizing service efficiency and the constraints of time, cost and demand. Finally, a random numerical example is used to simulate the model, and lingo is used to solve it.

Although much of the social science literature supports the importance of community assets for success in many policy areas, these assets are often overlooked when selecting communities for new infrastructure facilities. Extensive collaboration is crucial for the success of environmental and economic projects, yet it often is not adequately addressed when making siting decisions for new projects. This article develops a social asset framework that includes social, creative, and human capital to inform site-selection decisions. This framework is applied to the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance project to assess community suitability for biofuel-related developments. This framework is the first to take all necessary community assets into account, providing insight into successful site selection beyond current models. The framework not only serves as a model for future biorefinery projects but also guides tasks that depend on informed location selection for success.

The COVID-19 emergency is affecting manufacturing industries all over the world. Notably, it has generated several issues in the products’ supply and the global value chain in African countries. Besides this, Africa’s manufacturing value-added rate grew only 1.5 since 2018, and the foreign direct investment (FDI) from multinational enterprises (MNEs) remains very low due to high-risk factors. Most of these factors are linked to a non-optimized location selection that can adversely affect plant performance. For these reasons, supporting decision-makers in selecting the suitable country location in Africa is crucial, both for contributing to countries’ growth and companies’ performance. This research aims at presenting a comprehensive multi-criteria decision-making model (MCDM) to be used by MNEs to evaluate the best countries to develop new manufacturing settlements, highlighting the criteria that COVID-19 has impacted. Thus, it has affected countries’ performance, impacting the plant location selection choices. A combination of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) methods have also been used for comparative analysis. The criteria used in the proposed approach have been validated with a panel of MNEs experts.

Modular construction, which involves unit production in factories and on-site work, has benefits such as low cost, high quality, and short duration, resulting from the controlled factory environment utilized. An efficient tower crane lifting plan ensures successful high-rise modular project completion. For improved efficiency, the lifting plan should minimize the reaching distance of the tower crane, because this distance directly affects the tower crane capacity, which is directly related to crane operation cost. In situations where units are lifted from trailers, the trailer-to-tower crane distance can have a significant impact on the tower crane operation efficiency. However, optimization of this distance to improve efficiency has not been sufficiently considered. This research proposes a genetic algorithm optimization model that suggests optimized tower crane and trailer locations. The case study results show that through the proposed model, the project manager can reflect the optimal location selection and optimal tower crane selection options with minimal cost.

AbstractThis study aims to identify the location and cluster pattern of manufacturing SMEs in Khulna City and the reasons behind such pattern since localisation of SMEs has significant impact on the economic development of cities and regions. A walking survey was conducted to identify the SME location pattern and a semi-structured personal interview was conducted to collect data from manufacturing SME entrepreneurs to find why such patterns exist. A cross section qualitative multiple case study design and pattern matching technique was applied to answer the research questions. The finding of the study shows SME location choice was influenced by a combination of location specific, personal, and community factors whereby personal factors are prioritised over other factors in location selection. While the cluster formation or localisation of SMEs depends on only location-specific factors. The study findings are expected to contribute in urban planning and regional development through providing useful insights relating allocation of spaces for industry development.
