In December 2019, Coronavirus 2019 due to SARS CoV 2 was first discovered in Wuhan, China and then rapidly spread to more than 200 countries. Until now, there is no specific vaccine and no effective treatment, so it is very important from a clinical point of view to predict the evolution of the disease. Thus, in order to further analyze the value of the clinical application of blood count parameters in the diagnosis or management of COVID-19 (Coronavirus disease 2019) patients. Peripheral blood abnormalities of 102 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the pneumology department of CHU Mohamed VI in Marrakesh were analyzed retrospectively and compared to SARS CoV 2 negative patients. Results: WBCs in the patient group were 8.32 ×109/L vs 5.85 ×109/L, p<0.001, an elevated neutrophil count (5.33 ×109/L vs 3.27 ×109/L, p<0. 001), a lower hemoglobin concentration (13.5 [10.6-16.37] g/dl vs 14.8 [13.5-15.6] g/dl, p<0.001), and a higher Neutrophils-to-lymphocytes ratio (2.63 vs 1.52, p<0.001). The severe cases had a higher white blood cell count (14,279 (±6,564) vs. 7,471 (±2,609) ×109/L, p<0.001), a much higher neutrophil count (12,547 (±6,698) vs. 4,468 (±1,882) ×109/L, p<0.001). Lymphopenia (0.851 (±0.406) vs. 2.138 (±1.103) ×109/L, p<0.001), NLR (14.74 vs. 2.08) and Platelets-to-lymphocytes ratio (145 vs. 117) were higher than the non-severe COVID-19 cases. Conclusion: In light of these data, we deduce that regular monitoring of blood counts should be involved to judge the progression and prognosis of COVID-19.

Objectives Down syndrome (DS) is associated with multiple complications, including a high risk of leukemia and thyroid dysfunction. This clinical study aimed to examine the complete blood cell count in patients with DS without leukemia or transient abnormal myelopoiesis. We also aimed to evaluate the effect of thyroid dysfunction on hematological anomalies in DS. Methods We analyzed the peripheral blood cell count in 23 pediatric patients with DS with and without thyroid dysfunction and in 17 pediatric patients without DS with thyroid dysfunction. Results Patients with DS showed greater neutrophilia and lymphopenia than did patients with DS and hypothyroidism and patients with hypothyroidism. Surprisingly, patients with DS showed a significant degree of eosinopenia in the peripheral blood. Interestingly, hypothyroidism had an attenuating effect on different lineages in the complete blood count. However, these anomalies were specific for DS. Conclusions Our clinical findings support previous data on DS-associated changes in the complete blood count. Our study also shows novel alterations in the complete blood count in leukemia-free patients with DS in association with hypothyroidism. The attenuating effect of thyroid dysfunction on changes in different lineages in the context of DS is novel and deserves further analysis in larger studies.

Background: During viral outbreaks, pregnancy poses an increased risk of infection for women. Methods: In a prospective study, all patients admitted for delivery at term to Elena Doamna Obstetrics and Gynecology University Hospital in Iasi, Romania, between 1 April 2020 and 31 December 2020 were included. There were 457 patients, divided into two groups: group 1, SARS-CoV-2-positive patients (n = 46) and group 2, SARS-CoV-2-negative patients (n = 411). Among other tests, complete blood count was determined upon admittance, and the following values were studied: white blood cell count, lymphocytes, neutrophils, red blood cell count, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, red blood cell distribution width, hematocrit, platelet count, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, plateletcrit, and platelet large cell ratio. Results: in pregnant SARS-CoV-2-infected patients at term, there was a significant decrease in white blood cell, neutrophil, and lymphocyte count, and an increase in mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, compared to healthy pregnant women at term, although all still within normal limits. None of the other components of the complete blood count or fetal outcomes studied was significantly influenced by SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant patients at term.

Sialolithiasis is a chronic disease in which a sialolith (salivary stone) causes recurrent inflammation of the affected salivary gland. Anemia of inflammation is a well-described pathology in which a chronic inflammatory disease leads to a reduction in the red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit values. In this retrospective cohort study, we aim to find whether removal of the sialolith and alleviation of the inflammation affect the complete blood count results. We examined data regarding forty-nine patients who underwent surgery for the removal of a submandibular gland sialolith using the duct-stretching technique. Complete blood counts two years before and after the surgical procedure were collected. The average pre-procedure and post-procedure values were calculated for each patient to establish the average blood profile. The pre- and post-procedure values were compared to evaluate the effect of the surgical treatment on the blood profile. We found that the average blood count values for patients with sialolithiasis were towards the lower end of the normal range. Post-surgery, a significant increase in hematocrit, hemoglobin and red blood cell count was observed, which was more pronounced in the older age group and in patients with co-morbidities. We conclude that sialolith removal surgery is associated with significant improvement in the complete blood count values, especially in the elderly and in patients and with co-morbidities. The speculated pathogenesis is relative anemia of inflammation.

Abstract Developments of pulmonary diseases, often accompanied by infections of bacteria, severely affect the meat production and welfare of pigs. This study investigated 307 pigs at age of 240 d from an eight-breed cross reared under standardized housing conditions for associations among the extent of lung lesions, bacteria load inferred from 16S rRNA sequencing of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, as well as 57 immune cells and 25 hematological traits. We showed that the pigs under study suffered substantial and varied lung lesions, and the Mycoplasma is the most associated bacteria genera. At a false discovery rate of 0.05 (FDR &lt; 0.05), the severity of lung lesions were significantly associated with greater CD8+ to CD3+ cell ratio, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and standard deviation of red blood cell volume distribution width (RDW-SD), and lower CD4−CD8−/CD3+, CD3+CD4−CD8−/PBMCs (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) and CD14−CD16−/PBMCs cell ratios, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, lymphocyte count, and lymphocyte count percentage, reflecting an status of inflammation, immune suppression, and hypoxia of the pigs accompanying the progression of the lung lesions. The Mycoplasma abundance showed positive correlations with neutrophil count, neutrophil count percentage, NLR, monocyte count, coefficient of variation in red blood cell volume distribution width , and RDW-SD, and negative correlations with mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, lymphocyte count, and lymphocyte count percentage; these correlations are largely consistent with those of lung lesions, supporting the comorbidity of lung lesions and Mycoplasma infection. We also observed nonlinear associations that sharp increases in neutrophil count and neutrophil count percentage occurred only when Mycoplasma abundance raised above the population-average level. The results provide helpful insights into the changes of host immune status in response to Mycoplasma relevant lung diseases in pigs.

AbstractThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between changes in peripheral blood cell count and neopterin concentrations in patients with a history of breast cancer. Peripheral blood cell count, serum ferritin, serum neopterin and urinary neopterin concentrations were determined in 61 patients with a history of breast cancer and 74 control subjects. Hemoglobin, relative lymphocyte count and absolute lymphocyte count were lower, and relative neutrophil count, ferritin and serum neopterin concentrations were significantly higher in breast cancer patients than in controls. Compared to controls, the difference in hemoglobin concentration was statistically significant only in patients with active disease. Significant negative correlations were observed between urinary neopterin and hemoglobin as well as between serum neopterin and relative lymphocyte counts in breast cancer patients. Increased ferritin concentrations were associated with a history of hypertension, but higher absolute lymphocyte counts were associated with hypertension only in subjects without history of cancer. In conclusion, in patients with a history of breast cancer, anemia is associated with disease activity and systemic immune activation. Ferritin concentrations are increased in subjects with hypertension.

Toxicological studies on the peripheral blood after topical application of 5-fluorouracil to the buccal pouch of the Syrian hamster showed that a daily application of 10 μl (0.5 mg) was the maximum ideal dose for this animal. This dose did not depress to a significant degree the white blood cell count, red blood cell count, hemoglobin level, hematocrit value, or the peripheral differential blood counts after 14 daily applications. Doses of increased concentration either daily or periodically were less effective and toxic.

Mercury toxicity in tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, (Linnaeus, 1758) was investigated by the hematological parameters after long-term (14 days) exposure to various Hg concentrations (0.02, 0.002, 0.0002mg/L Hg). Test groups were set up with three replicates for each concentration, plus the control group. Blood samples were collected from six individuals for each concentration at 0, 3, 7, 10 and 14 days of exposure. The hematological parameters analyzed were: total red blood cell count (RBC), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), hematocrit (Ht), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), total white blood cell count (WBC) and differential leukocyte counts and total thrombocyte count (Tr). There were no significant differences among the mean hematological values at the different Hg concentrations indicating that Hg at the concentrations studied was not toxic to tilapia.

<p><strong>Objective:</strong> The aim of this study was to evaluate complete blood count parameters to predict ovarian torsion in cases presented with ovarian mass.</p><p><strong>Study Design:</strong> Pre-operative demographic data and complete blood count parameters of 72 patients, who were operated on preliminary adnexal torsion and diagnosed as adnexal torsion with a benign ovarian cyst (Study group) were retrospectively compared with those of 77 patients who were operated with an indication of persistent benign ovarian cysts without torsion (control group) at Zeynep Kamil Women and Children’s Health Training and Research Hospital and Department of Obstetrics &amp; Gynecology at Erciyes University Medical Faculty between 2011 and 2015. Complete blood count parameters were utilized to predict ovarian torsion cases.</p><p><strong>Result:</strong> Neutrophil (AUC=792, P=&lt;0.001), white blood cell (AUC=787, P=&lt;0.001) counts and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (AUC=770, P=&lt;0.001) were significant predictors for adnexal torsion. Optimal cut off value for white blood cell, neutrophil count and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio were 8.3x103 (72% sensitivity, 73% specificity), 5.5x103 (73% sensitivity, 76% specificity), 2.9 (73% sensitivity, 79% specificity) respectively.</p><p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> Among all the parameters white blood cell count, neutrophil/lymphocyte and neutrophil count were the most powerful predictors for real adnexal torsion cases. Simple blood count parameters detailed evaluation may help clinicians to confirm or rule out adnexal torsion in cases presented with ovarian cyst and adnexal mass.</p>
