The present study aims to determine the changes in stomatal characters of several plants depending on the shadow conditions. Within this scope, the leaf samples were collected from Platanus orientalis, Cercis siliquastrum, Eonymus japonica, Cotoneaster franchettii, and Buxus sempervirens species grown in open spaces. Scales images of leaf samples were taken using Scanning Electron Microscope and measurements were performed on these images in order to determine the micro-morphological characteristics such as stoma length (µm), stoma width (µm), pore opening length (µm), and pore opening width (µm) in the statistical analyses. The changes of these characteristics depending on the species, individuals, and shadow conditions were determined. The results showed that the differences in stomatal characteristics were statistically significant only between the individuals, whereas the effects of light and individual were statistically non-significant.

A new species of glycerid polychaete, Glycera sheikhmujibi, is described from the saltmarsh on the central coast of Bangladesh. The species is identified based on morphological characteristics using both a light microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The species is characterized by the presence of three distinct types of proboscideal papillae: type 1 papillae (conical with three transverse ridges), type 2 (conical with a straight, median, longitudinal ridge), and type 3 (round, shorter, and broader, with a straight, median, longitudinal ridge). It has a Y-shaped aileron with gently incised triangular base, almost equal-size digitiform noto- and neuropodial lobes in the mid-body, and long ventral cirri at the posterior end. The new species is compared with its related species, previously described from the Bay of Bengal region. A key to all these species is provided.

The morphological characteristics of pollen grains of 16 cultivars belonging to two species of the genus Castanea (Castanea mollissima and C. henryi) collected from southern China were observed by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The length of polar axis (PL), the equatorial diameter (ED), the length of colpus (CL) of grain, P/E ratio (polar axis to equatorial diameter), P/C ratio (polar axis to colpus length), and C/E ratio (colpus length to equatorial diameter) were measured and their variations were compared among studied taxa. The result of this study indicated that chestnut pollen grain was a tricolporate in aperture type, and aperprolate type in equatorial view. The morphological characteristics were mainly represented by PL, ED and CL as revealed by principal components analysis, which accounted for 99.56% of the total variations. The cluster analysis by the UPGMA tree divided the taxa into three groups and showed a great morphological affinity among the 16 cultivars.

Using light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), the megaspores and microspores of 77 samples representing ca. 70 species of Selaginella from China are observed. Combing previous studies, the spore morphology of nearly all documented Selaginella species from China were reviewed. Based on the morphological characteristics in megaspores and/or microspores, we divided the spores of Chinese species into 15 types and three types are further divided into various subtypes. Each type and subtype are described in detail and a key to the types and subtypes of spores is given. For the first time, the systematic significance of microspores of Selaginella are discussed, and the results indicate that microspores of Selaginella are significant in the systematics of Selaginella. Some important morphological characteristics in spores (e.g., color, micro-sculpture, size, etc.), often been neglected in previous studies, are introduced. Some spore-morphological synapomorphies of the clades and subclades, identified by recent molecular work (Zhou et al. 2015a), are well established. Using the spore morphology, the delimitation of some taxonomically difficult species in Selaginella is assessed.

Alopecosa volubilis n. sp. is described from Korea and is differentiated from other species in Alopecosa Simon, 1885 by morphological characteristics, such as three retromarginal teeth of chelicera, smaller body size, and the presence of a distinct tip of the median apophysis. The pedipalpal sclerites and somatic characters of two similar species, A. moriutii Tanaka, 1985 and A. hokkaidensis Tanaka, 1985, are compared with those of the new species. An illustration of the body and scanning electron microscope (SEM) pictures of the pedipalpal organ are provided.

The objective of this work was to evaluate leaf epidermis morphological characteristics of three citrus somatic hybrids, compared to their parents. Parental and somatic hybrid young leaves were collected and processed for scanning electron microscope observations. Citrus polyploid hybrids have fewer stomata per area and these are larger compared to their diploid parental parents. No differences in internal arrangement of the stomatal cells were detected between parental plants and somatic hybrids. Additional studies may determine if these differences will influence physiological behavior of the plants in the field.

A broken wooden diptych was found in 1986 on the 14th century B.C. Ulu Burun, Turkey, shipwreck, with only minute fragments available for anatomical study using scanning electron microscopy. Previously, the earliest known diptychs, considered the oldest books in existence, had been found at Assyrian Nimrud and were constructed of walnut. Using observed features from the wood fragments a computerised wood identification program generated Buxus as a probable candidate. Boxwood (Buxus) is frequently mentioned in historical references, including Assyrian texts, as a wood used for small, durable objects. Comparison of the diptych wood features with those of Buxus sempervirens convinces us that the diptych was constructed from boxwood (Buxus sp.).

Abstract Total 23 species of the genus Loxoconcha and 21 species of the genus Xestoleberis were presented in this study. A scanning electron microscope for observing muscle scars of the carapaces, and a stereoscopic microscope for dissecting, observing and sketching the appendages were used. The results show that most species of the genus Loxoconcha consist of four adductor scars to arrange in a curved sub-vertical row and concave anteriorly, except L. pulchra carrying five, in which the top one is divided into two. The frontal scars with C-shape, opening anteriorly are presented in most of Loxoconcha species, however, the frontal scar with bean-shape or oval-shape is discovered in five species of L. japonica group. Most of L. kosugii bear the frontal scar with C-shape, but the frontal scar with Y-shape is found in several individuals. This phenemenon shows the close phylogeny between the genus Loxoconcha and Palmoconcha. About the genus Xestoleberis, chaetotaxy of setae on all appendages, except setae of exopodite on the maxillula is a typical character of this genus. The published fossil records and the tendencies of change in the number of setae on the maxillula and mandible among three phylogenetic groups suggest that Group A or B is an ancestor of the genus Xestoleberis, and Group C is a derived group.

Abstract. Research on the sponge barnacle of Indonesia is very rare, and this study is aimed to describe the morphological characteristics of sponge barnacles and their specific relationship with their sponge host species. This research was a survey and sponge samples were collected by tearing apart any available sponge found in three sampling locations, typically coral reef areas of Weh Island, Seribu Islands, and Karimunjawa Islands. Sponge barnacles contained in sponge samples were observed using stereo microscope and scanning electron microscope, and species identification was determined based on the morphological description of Darwin (1854), Pilsbry (1916), Martin dan Davis (2001), and Kolbasov (1993). Four species of sponge barnacles were found consisting of Acasta cyathus, Acasta fenestrata, Euacasta dofleini, and Membranobalanus longirostrum. Specific relationships of barnacle and its sponge host were found between Euacasta dofleini and Haliclona sp. and between Membranobalanus longirostrum and Suberites sp. respectively. Keywords : sponge; barnacle; acasta; membranobalanus; biodiversityAbstrak. Penelitian teritip spons Indonesia jarang dilakukan sejak kelompok ini pertama kali dideskripsikan hingga saat ini.
