The analysis of the need to use devices for monitoring the state of the driver in transport is carried out. It is noted that the driver may not notice short-term attention gaps. It is necessary to exclude such failures that may lead to serious consequences on the road. On the basis of a mathematical model, it is shown that it is important to take into account both the reliability of the monitoring system to recognize the loss of the driver's efficiency, and its ability to quickly initialize the driver if necessary. It is shown that the use of systems that detect a decrease in the level of vigilance with a sufficiently high reliability will provide an increase in the overall level of road safety. An example of such a system is given.
